Chapter four: Mate

1004 Words
Grant POV I caught her before she could hit the floor. I'm cradling her against my chest. Dr. Wood tried to take her away from me. I growl at him. No one takes my mate from me, no one. I know I'm being irrational, but I can't help it. The urge to protect and provide for my mate is strong. Dr. Wood said, "I'll have to check out my patient, lay her on the bed." I decided to do what he told me to do. I watched as he examined her. I feel so helpless. I hate the feeling. Dr. Wood finally looked at me with a concern look. I started to panic, but I wouldn't dare show it. "Is she going to be OK?" I asked, trying to keep my voice neutral. I don't want to give anything away. I just met this minotaur, and I don't trust him. But in his defense, I don't trust many people, especially if they are not an orc. Dr. Wood nodded. "She'll be fine," he said and then added, "But will you?" "Yes, why wouldn't I?" I said, looking annoyed at the minotaur. "Because she your mate." He said like it's obvious. "How do you know that?" I ask, trying not to sound shock. "I'm a mated male. I saw the way you looked at her it's the same way I looked at my mate. " He said like we were the same. "We are nothing a like." I said offended that I was just compared to a minotaur. "Maybe not in most things but with this you and me are one in the same except I think orcs have one mate while minotaur like myself has two mate I found one now I'm just waiting for the other one." He said, getting off topic "It is impossible for me to have a mate," I said as I looked down at the mate I shouldn't have. Dr. Wood looked confused as he said "Why do you think that? Don't orcs have mates?" "Yes, we do, but not my family, the leader of the orcs don't." I said feeling like I need to explain I went on "an ancestor of mine angered a witch and she cursed us to where the first born males are destin to be leader will never have a mate so that mean I shouldn't have a mate let alone a human mate." Dr. Wood just stared at me for a long while, almost figuring out what to say, then he finally said, "Maybe the curse was broken, or maybe you don't know the whole curse." "Unlikely I know that curse inside and out. The orc that is destin to be the leader is taught about the curse at a young age." That's all I will say on the matter. I remember I was told about the curse. I was so devastated that I was going to be denied a mate. While I see orcs get their true mate. I'm happy when they do, but it hard not to be bitter about it. I thought I would have to choose a mate eventually, but now I have my true one, right here, and I'm never letting her go. I look down at my unconscious mate. I can't stop staring. "So, I guess this means you help me convince the council not to get rid of the human females." Dr. Wood said, pulling me out of my thoughts. He sounded so hopeful. He knows I'm going to help him now. The urge to protect my mate is too great. Then it occurred to me just how endangered my mate is. I'll do everything in my power to make her safe and protect her with my life. Even if that means protecting her from the council. "Yes, I'll do it for Amiela," I said. This is the first I used my mate name, and it felt good on my lips. Then I realized what I was doing here in the first place. "I've got to talk to her about the attack." I said, shaking with anger now. Someone tried to kill my mate before I got a chance to meet her. Looking down at my beautiful mate, I'm going to make whoever did this pay and gift the attacker head to Amiela, my queen. I wonder if she would like that. I don't know anything about humans. I always thought they were weak. But as I look down at my sweet, gorgeous Amiela, I see something else inside her a fierceness and strength that no one else sees. I looked at Dr. Wood and asked, "When do you think she'll wake up." "Soon, probably an hour or two sometimes the mating bond is so strong it overwhelmed the senses especially for someone who probably don't know what happening from what I know humans usually don't have mates." He said. "So, I'm the reason she passed out. It's my fault." I say feeling guilty. We haven't even been mated for ten minutes, and I'm already a bad mate. "It was your connection with her, but she'll be fine." He said reassuringly "She'll feel the mate bond? She can feel the connection?" I ask curiously "Subconsciously, yes, but she probably won't know why she feels this pull towards you, so be patient with her." He said. "I will help you with the council if you make sure not to tell anyone about this, not even Amiela." I say, but we both know it's an empty threat. I'm going to help anyway, regardless if he keeps his mouth shut or not. "You have my word." He said and looked down at Amiela before adding,"I'll call you when she wakes up." He seriously did think I was going to leave after finding my mate, did he? I don't trust anyone else to watch her, but me. "I'm staying." I say without a moment, thought. Chuckling Dr. Wood said "Very well, I'll get you a bigger chair." And walk out.
