Chapter Fifty
It was after eight when Carl got home. Too late to take Sophie for a walk down to the playground but not late enough to miss out on giving her a bath before she went to bed.
‘You sure you’re okay to bath her?’ said Nina.
‘I’ve only had a couple of beers,’ said Carl. ‘Chief inspectors have to lead by example.’
‘That would be a change,’ said Nina. ‘I don’t recall it stopping you when you were an inspector.’
‘Times are changing,’ said Carl. ‘Now, come on, Sophie, let’s get you organized for your bath.’
After he’d bathed Sophie and put her to bed, Carl sat in the kitchen with Nina.
