CHAPTER IV: Too Late

I love you more than you’ll ever know... and if you found your happiness with someone else, I’ll be happy for you…

Year 2003.

The days went by so fast! It’s like tearing up the dates from a calendar! Milena and I were best of friends for almost a year! And up until now, I’m secretly in love with her while she still treated me like her older sister. I am hurt but I couldn’t stop my heart from wanting her! I needed to divert my attention to someone else, so I entertained my suitors.

This school year, Milena and I were assigned in separate class sections. Argh! That gave me no chance of guarding her from the people who habitually flirts with her! And it weakened my chance of telling her what I truly feel! I’m only able to be with her during lunch time and sometimes after school.

I’m starting to get suspicious and worried by Milena’s actions. I felt like someone was already caught her attention! I guess it’s the freakish girl from last year! They were classmates now! I’m so pissed!

Every lunch break, our friends and I still bonded outside Milena’s classroom. One time, we were busy chatting outside with Milena, when she paused for a second to check at someone standing beside her desk. We asked her what’s the matter, but she just shook her head sideways and continued talking.

Four months later, we’re caught up with a lot of school works but still got time to hangout and gossip about everything. And today, we’re having lunch time at the school’s canteen. We’re waiting for Milena. When she came, she sat beside me and they started reminiscing about the past while we ate.

Milena embraced me and whispered, “I miss you so much, Princess! We rarely see each other nowadays! I miss watching movies with you!”.

“Don’t be such a dramatic, baby Mi! We were still bonding every lunch time!”

“That’s it?! We’re only meeting during lunch breaks! I’m not used to this kind of setup! We were always together like conjoined twins! Are you not missing your cute baby sis?”

“I miss you too my cutie baby. Uhm… Mi, could we talk later after class? I wanted to tell you something impor---”, I was cut off when my friends started laughing out loud. They were talking about one of our little adventure mishaps. 

Some students were staring at our group because of the unnecessary noise.

Milena didn’t hear me. I was about to talk again but one of our friends, Jojo, who’s sitting in front of us kicked my knee under the table. I looked at him and he silently said sorry. I think that he was not supposed to kick me, and his target was Milena.

I felt him kicked again. Milena looked at him and then he hand-signaled to look behind us and she instantly understood his actions. He’s telling her that there’s a person behind and looking at us. Milena slowly turned her head back to see the person and she abruptly removed her arm from embracing me. I caught a glimpse of a tall girl who run outside the canteen. I was surprised when Milena followed.

I looked back at Jojo and asked, “What happened, J? What did you tell Milena? Why did she run outside like her butt’s on fire?”

He just laughed and said, “Tsk! Tsk! You’re so slow as a tortoise my friend! Spoiled brat’s gonna win this time!”

What’s he talking about? Spoiled brat? Shoot! Don’t tell me that’s the freakish girl who’s lurking around Milena all the time! I always caught her stealing glances and simply giving gifts or letters to Milena. But out of the girls who gave gifts to her, my girl’s only ignoring that brat.

I once asked Milena about that brat girl and she just shrugged her shoulders on me. I thought it’s because she’s not interested but I realized it now. Maybe, she’s feeling something for that freakish spoiled brat and that’s why she’s always shy around her!I will never let that spoiled brat take my love away! 

I ran after them until I made my way on our school’s garden. There were so many trees here! I looked around and I found them under a mango tree!I was about to walk closer to them, but I stopped when I saw Milena knelt in front of that brat and pulled her handkerchief to wipe something on that freakish face! 

I slowly turned my back away from them. It hurts so much!

I looked back at them one last time, and I regretted doing so! My heart totally exploded from my chest when I saw them kissed! I broke down to tears and I leaned back on some tree for support. I was going to confess to her tonight! 

Am I too late?Why did I look back? My heart was now shattered into pieces! 

Her lips that I wanted to kiss from the first day we met, was now claimed by someone else! That was her first kiss! The first kiss that I should’ve had.
