DANE’S P.O.V
“Good morning Mr. Matteo, It’s good to see that you have regained consciousness so soon” said the old male doctor as I woke up in a hospital bed. My eyes took a while to adjust to the bright hospital light, scanning the room I took note off the closed blinds on my left, the smart full HD television, a few comfortable looking chairs and the ocean view on my right…but no Mia. “Okay, so we have ran some tests and found out that your blackout was caused by stress and sudden shock. However, it’s nothing to worry about, your vitals are back to normal, but I do suggest that you should go on a vacation or take some time for yourself. ” he said, standing next to my bed and writing some notes on a paper attached to his clipboard. “Thank you, Doctor. When will I be discharged?” I asked. “So eager to get out of here, are we? Mr. Matteo, we just have a few more tests to run. You are a very lucky man, Mr. Matteo, you avoided a heart attack. It’s a strong heart that you have there, the man who has transplanted it to you must have, undoubtedly been a strong and healthy man.” The doctors words left me in confusion. “Man? Doctor, I think that you are mistaken. It wasn’t a man that I have got my heart transplant from. It was a woman. In fact and unfortunately it was my wife’s Jeena’s heart” I said, my eyebrows furrowed. “ No Mr.Matteo, that can’t be quite right. Firstly, the records states that it was a male heart. Secondly, I met your wife Jeena, the previous time that you was admitted in hospital and there is not possible way that her heart will fill up the space of yours” explained the doctor. “Doctor what are you saying? Please can you go and check the records again?” I asked. “Sure Mr. Matteo, I’ll bring them to you when I find them. Your daughter is waiting outside, I’ll send her in now” he said and walked toward the door. “Thank you Doctor. That will be much appreciated” I said as I watched him leave.
Mia walked in, worry filled in her eyes, hair in a mess, wearing the same clothes from last night, my child looks like she didn’t get a blink of sleep. “Dad!” she came rushing towards me. “Are you okay? How are you feeling? Is there anything that I can do? Are your thirsty? Hungry?” she asked, all in one breath, not giving me a chance to answer. “Mia, I’m fine. Don’t worry. It wasn’t anything serious” I comforted her. “Don’t lie to me, Dad. I see it in your eyes when you lie to me and the doctor already explained everything to me. Dad, I didn’t know that you had a heart transplant. Why didn’t you tell me, Dad? Did you know that your stress attack could have led to a heart attack. Dad, do you have any idea how serious this is! Dad! If anything happens to you, what would I do? Dad, Xavier is my fiancé but you are my blood!. At the end of the day if anything goes wrong, who would I turn to if you are not there? You can’t do that to me Dad! Mum left me before I could even see her! You cannot ever leave me, Dad!” she cried, her face buried in her hands as she sat on the chair next to my bed. “Shuuuush , Mia baby, nothing is going to happen to me. I promise that I would never leave you alone. Mia baby, you have nothing to worry about. I will always be by your side, I promise!” I pulled her towards me, her head on my chest as her tears wet my clothes. “Dad, why did you get so stressed after I told you about the wedding? Do you not want me to marry him?” she asked, looking into my eyes. “Mia, do you love him?” I asked. “Yes dad, I really do” she said, her words were genuine. “Would you leave him, if I asked you to?” I asked, her eyes widened at my question. “Dad, I love him. I will try and make the both of you work out the differences that you guys have. Dad, I can’t live without you but neither can I live without him” I felt defeated at her words. “Well then ,do you trust him more than me?” I asked. “Dad, I think it’s time that I tell you a secret. I know him for much longer than you think.” She said and held my hand. “From the orphan age?” I asked, not thinking clearly. “Orphan age? What orphan age?” confusion evident in her face as she looked at me for answers. “He was in an orphan age that we own, I used to take you there when you was really young” I lied. “I don’t recall that. I didn’t even know that we own an orphan age” she said, still looking confused and lost in her thoughts. “How long do you know him?” I asked, snapping her out of her thoughts. “Well, I can’t remember the exact time that we met but I know that it was since I was a child. As much memories that I have with you I have with him too. So, yes I do trust him” she explained and I felt as if I’m about to have another attack. That b****** got acquainted with my daughter when she was just a child, I began to feel the heat again, like I did before my blackout. I realised that he is much more dangerous than I thought, if he met Mia when she was so young, she is not his target, I am! However, this B****** is using Mia to get to me. Is it my money that he is after? Does he not have enough of his own? Does he see my empire as a threat to his legal or illegal businesses? What does he want? A bead of sweat dripped down my right cheek, hiding from Mia who was seated on my left. He hasn’t hurt Mia yet and maybe he won’t but no one befriends a child and later turns that friendship into a relationship when they are grown up, it’s like he had everything all planned out! But why? Or maybe … maybe he was jealous that I have adopted Mia from the orphan age instead of him…or maybe he had a sister that he wished for me to adopt instead of Mia and he wanted revenge but fell in love with Mia instead??? “Does he have any siblings?” I asked, not showing her any of my symptoms. “Yes, but I have never met him. He is studying in London, I think he is a year or two older than me” she said, making my symptoms vanish with the ray of hope. “Are they close?” I asked. “Me, his brother and a lady that he keeps as a mother is his entire world” she said, making me smile as a plan unwrapped in my head.
………
Knock-knock*Knock-knock* “Come in!” I said and saw the doctor pop his head inside with a file in his hand. “Mia, can you get me some coffee?” I asked. “Sure, I’ll be right back” she said. “No actually, I want a Seattle coffee” I said. “Dad, we live in Seattle, all the coffee’s are Seattle coffee’s” she laughed. “No, the special one. From the Seattle coffee shop” I said. “Okay fine, but don’t blame me if it’s gone cold by the time I bring it to you” she moaned and left.
“What’s up doc?” I asked. “I was right and you was wrong” he said as he handed me the file. I was speechless as I read the report. It states that I received a male heart, from a 34 year old man. The man was declared dead with a bullet in his head. The name of this man was David Knight. Could he be related to Xavier Knight? Is that the grudge that Xavier holds against me? I have his father’s heart.
Oh Jeena! You died for nothing. If only you waited, you could have been here with me… Right now, I don’t know what is worse, the fact that I have the heart of a man who was murdered? The fact that the man whose heart I have is Xavier’s father? Or the fact that Jeena’s death went in vain? My beautiful Jeena, may your soul rest in peace…
