PART 6:GRIEF

XAVIER’S P.O.V Anger boiled inside of me as I beat up a man who owed me a lot of money for a long time now. “Please, I have a family” he begged and flashbacks of my past came flooding from my memories, It’s the same way my father begged. With a hard strike I knocked him unconscious. “When he wakes up, tell him that I want 10 000 dollars a month with 50 percent interest on the amount that he owes me. Every month that he fails to pay, I would cut of one of his fingers” I ordered my right hand man, Mark. “But Sir this is the ninth time that you are letting him go, normally you give people three chances and then if they fail to deliver you kill without any mercy. Sir, sometimes you don’t even give a person a chance, you just take their life” he said. “Didn’t you hear? He has a family. Don’t question my decisions Mark!” I said and he lowered his eyes at my glare. My hands filled with the blood of the man that I just beat, I made my way to the nearest bathroom. “Xav” I heard her soft voice and I turned around to face her. “What happened to your hand?” she asked, panic evident in her brown eyes as she saw my bloody hands. “Don’t worry Dianna” I said as I walked over, towering her small figure. “While I was out, I saw a man who was involved in an accident so I helped him” I lied. “You are a good person Xavier” she said giving me her smile that brightens the days in which I don’t see Mia. “Let me help you clean it off” she said and led me to the bathroom. “So was there anyone else injured in the accident?” she asked while cleaning my hands. “No, just one man” I added to my lie. “A single vehicle accident?” she asked. “Yeah. He was pretty serious though, but more than anything he wanted me to call up his wife and tell her that he loves her. I think that he thought he is going to die and I guess if I wasn’t there on time he probably wouldn’t have made it” I said, proud of how well I lie. “, are you okay?” I asked when I noticed her holding her head with her eyes shut tightly. “Di?” I said again as I got off the edge of the tub and made my way to the basin in which she stood in front of. “DIANNA!” I yelled, my heart beat increasing rapidly as she faints in my arms, her brown curls covering her face as I picked her up and carried her unconscious body down the staircase. “MARK!!! MARK HELP!!! CALL THE AMBULANCE!!!” I yelled in my state of panic. …….. MIA’S P.O.V Talking to aunty Lexi was pointless all she did was repeat “Let the past rest in the past Mia, that’s the only way to be happy” instead on answering my questions. So here I am, carrying a bouquet of brightly coloured flowers making my way to Helen’s ward. “Kitten” I heard and my face lit up as I turned to meet the source of that voice. “Xavier” I said and went up to him, claiming my warm embrace. “What are you doing here kitten? Who is in hospital?” he asked, his eyes focused on the flowers that I was carrying. “I’m here to see my housekeeper, Helen. She has been like a mum to me over my growing years. She has suffered from a heart attack the other night and has been in hospital since” I said, my voice low. “I’m sorry love. I’m sure that she will be fine” he said, holding me close to his chest, rubbing my back in a soothing way. “Why are you here?” I asked, worry filling my mind as I wasn’t sure if he was here to visit someone or here for himself. “A person who is very close to me collapsed. It’s not the first time that it has happened but I always worry when it does. She too is like a mother to me like Helen is to you, she is my pillar of strength” he said, sadness in his eyes. “Ironic isn’t it. Both of us don’t have a mother, yet here we are being supportive of these women who are like mother’s to us” I said, giving him a small, soft smile. “Yeah, that’s true. You want to get some coffee?” he asked. “I’m supposed to go to the office today and I’m already a bit late, but do you want to accompany me to Helen’s ward. You can meet her” I said, not wanting to part from him so soon. “Yeah sure, I would love too” he said and followed me. “I wonder what happened to him?” I said as we were passing a man who looked like he was terribly beaten up. “Looks like an accident” said Xavier, his eyes fixed on that man and the look on his face had him unrecognisable. “Do you know him?” I asked as I noticed the fear in the man’s face when he looked at Xavier, who looked as if he wanted kill this poor man. “No babe, how would I know him? Come! Let’s walk a little faster so you can get to the office” he said, breaking off the glare that he gave the man, then lightly pushed me forward with his hand on my lower back. As we entered my heart ached seeing so many cords attached to her and the sound of the heart monitor filled the room. A tear dropped from my eye, seeing hers still closed and I felt Xavier place his hand on my shoulder in a supportive way. Walking forward I placed the flowers in the jar which was next to her bed and I sat on the stool next to her, talking her hand in mine. “Please wake up soon Helen. I need you, only you can tell me the truth now! You know all the secrets of the past and can answer all my questions. Please Helen, I need to know about my mother and more than that I need to know what happened in the first 5 years of my life. I don’t remember a thing only you can help me!” I said as more tears rolled down from my eyes. Suddenly the beeps from her heart monitor turned into a discomforting solid beep. “Wha- what’s happening? Helen?” I said in shock. “Xav- Xavier what’s happening?” his face reflecting the same shock which was on my face. “Doctor! Nurse! Someone help!” he yelled, and a few nurses and a doctor came rushing through asking us to wait outside. “Xavier” I said and cried in his chest, his strong arms wrapped around me, offering me comfort. We waited for about an hour until we saw the doctor come out of Helen’s ward. “Were you the one who was with Helen?” he asked. “Yes” in said, eager to hear what he has to say. “Miss. I’m afraid that she is no more” he said and my world went silent as my eyes poured out my grief. After comforting me “You should call your dad and tell me” said Xavier. Dialling his number he picked up immediately “Mia! Where are you? You were supposed to be at the office hours ago” he half yelled, anger evident in his tone but I couldn’t care less right now. “Dad, it’s Helen…” was all I managed to say. “I’ll be there in 20 minutes” he said and hung up, getting the message of the death from my few words and breaking tone.
