“Whatever are you doing here?” Ms Cathy's loud scream jolted me to consciousness.
It took me a while to figure out where I was. The last face I had seen had been Raine’s beautiful face in his cave in the forest. That face was deceptive.
That young man was a lot of things. Because I was in my home in Wolves Creek.
I heard Ms Cathy's footsteps as she ran across the yard.
I looked at myself. I was wrapped tightly in the cocoon of his bedsheets and dropped in front of my door.
Typical and inventive, Raine.
“Are you insane? It is very cold out. Werewolves do freeze,” she chided as she helped me up.
The bedsheets had been tied really tightly. I was slightly annoyed at the way he had packaged me. What did he take me for? A baby?
Smiling ashamedly, “I fell asleep while reading a case on my phone” I lied, although my phone was nowhere in sight. It had fallen in the forest, I hadn't even asked if he had seen it.
“The sufferings of a judge,” she cursed. “You have to be very careful. Although it is peaceful, the island is not what it used to be.”
She helped me inside my house. I collapsed on my sofa. I turned up the heater immediately.
I groaned in relief.
“What food do you have?” Ms Cathy asked as she made my way to my kitchen.
I doubt she would find anything there. I love cooking, but I do not cook for myself. A curse from living with Kale and his family. He made me cook during their joint family dinners all the time.
I shuddered at the memory. I should have put that bullet in him earlier. They will never find me. Never.
I heard Ms Cathy rummaging through my drawers and I allowed my thoughts to soar.
Raine Carl was no killer. He could have easily done away with me, but he didn't. He even risked his life by coming to drop me in Wolves Creek.
I wonder how no one saw him. The people of Wolves Creek were hiding something regarding those killings. And I will get to the bottom of it.
A flash of his handsome face made me sit up, blushing all over. I wonder why I was doing this.
But it must be paid back. He has saved my life twice now. And I always paid back my debt.
“I managed to fix you something, Judge Karina” Ms Cathy cooed.
I smiled delightfully, my stay in Wolfs Creek was going to be enjoyable after all. I would investigate this case to the end and prove both of our innocence.
******************
The next day at the office, I walked up to some colleagues during lunch break.
I never ate at the cafeteria, but I figured I might as well get information from these people. I even called in sick at Randle's.
“How is your work going?” I smiled beautifully as I sat in front of the famous three in my jurisdiction.
They paused their chatter, appraising me with their eyes. I could read the subtle and fleeting judgmental looks in them.
“Very fine. The name is Tania,”, a brunette replied. She had a large face and a huge red lipstick on her lips. She looked like she had dipped them in macaroni sauce.
I smiled ruefully. I could play this game. “Mine is Karina. I recently joined the court.
They all laughed, the three of them, all giggling silly brunettes. I almost cursed my eagerness to know more about Raine's story. I would never hang out with such a fake crowd. They were Lilith's field, not mine.
Another of the ladies spoke, “We know you very well, my name is Mina, this is Chloe,“ she pointed at the middle-aged lady next to her.
“I am new to town. How do you know me? Are you regulars at Randle's?”
“Everyone knows the beautiful lady, Sheriff Brandon is into these days. He is not hiding it,” Chloe answered with jealousy written on her face.
“How did you manage to get his interest?” Tania asked, eyes blazing. I knew a sly wolf when I saw one.
But I didn't care. I came here to do the questioning and not to answer their questions.
“Do you guys know anything about Alpha Carl's case twenty years ago?” I asked, keeping my expression eager.
They all went quiet. An edginess seeped in as they stared dumbly at me.
“Who doesn't? We were teenagers then, but we witnessed it.” Mina replied, dropping her juice.
“Don't you find the case odd? Why didn't they investigate before lynching them?”
Mina opened her mouth, staring at me in shock. “You are making me lose my appetite,” she hissed.
“Why are you asking this? And how did you know that? You are not even a Wolves Creek local?” Tania asked suspiciously.
“I heard the news somewhere,” I replied nonchalantly.
Chloe cleared her throat, she had been eating her food the whole time, not contributing to the discussion.
“I don't mind showing you the sight. “
Mina and Tania looked at her skeptical. “You?”
“The burnt house is still there. It's not like anyone goes there. Although it's all just a rumble now,” she shrugged.
“Alright, I will love that” I accepted.
“She hasn't even told us why she is asking,” Tania whispered to Chloe.
I smiled and indulged them. I launched into a fictional fantasy tale of loving dark tales and the idea of the island horrific past fascinated me.
They bought the story line, hook and sinker.
“I will take you on one condition,” Chloe continued.
I nearly groaned out loud.
“You have to follow us to the Moonlight Dance tomorrow night. Sheriff Brandon will be there too. If you can make him be with him for a night. I will tell you all that I know about the Carl's.” She said sweetly.
“Fine” I gave in. I wanted to have fun too. I hadn't attended any outing since I got to the island. I would kill three birds with one stone.
I could get Sheriff Brandon off my tail, get the story of Raine and also have a lot of fun by dancing to my heart content.
