Episode 1 - Me before You
I watched the blood drip from his face. He looked shocked. He never thought I was capable of shooting the gun. But I was a judge and this is my verdict on Alpha Kale. There was no room for appeal in my court.
A wide grin spread across my face as his body hit the ground. I had no need for a shitty mate.
I knew that the gunshot would have been heard across town, but I didn't care. It was self-defense.
I had been mated to Alpha Kale for eight years. We bonded when I was twenty-two. I had been madly stupidly in love.
I never saw the red flags. Perhaps I did, and the waves of love sunk them low until I was married and everything washed ashore every single evil act I had excused when I was courting him.
He was a master manipulator, abuser and a cheat.
He never hid his affection for my younger sister Lilith; she was cute, innocent and unable to defend herself. Those were his words.
“You ought to take proper care of her, Karina. You are the Luna,” he accused, turning the blame on me.
Lilith, on her part, acted coyly as though she didn't understand her own actions.
The day things began spiraling to the journey of no return was when Lilith wore my Luna robe and laid on my bed. Her luck must have run out since I was sure it was not her first time.
I had torn the clothes off her and slapped her as a wake-up call. Alpha Kale came home, saw her and slapped me in return. I applied makeup to cover it up and sat in my high chair and ruled over cases at the court in CrestMoon pack.
I was the pious judge, and the pride of the Crestmoon Pack. Everyone thought I had a blissful marriage. I was beautiful and the youngest female judge in CrestMoon and since I married the richest Alpha in CrestMoon. I was the envy of all female wolves. No one would understand what I was going through.
The Kale family was rich, they owned most of the businesses in town and had a net worth estimated in billions.
Several things made Alpha Kale the ideal man; he was handsome, rich and had a great body. But he was a monster.
I sat in court and judged cases daily, wondering what people would say if I left. The day I finally decided to leave was when he disconnected himself from me. I couldn't sense him anymore. He had rejected our bond. This was after I had confronted him about Lilith's pregnancy.
I was not a strong female physically. My strength lies in my intellect. Somehow, this had been dulled by love when I accepted to mate with Alpha Kale.
My reality soon hit me. I sent other men to jail, yet I couldn't get rid of one man who made my life hell.
I became determined to brush off this vermin. I wondered the best way to get rid of him. He would never sign divorce papers from me. He was the type that liked to keep up with appearances. His reputation at CrestMoon would be ruined if I divorced him. His dirty secrets would be exposed.
The perfect opportunity came when Lilith moved into our house as his mistress.
That was the final straw.
“If she comes in, I am leaving,“ I threatened.
“You are going nowhere,” he snapped, growling at me. He tried to hold down my shoulder, but I evaded him.
Annoyance fluttered across his face, but I was past that. I wanted my freedom.
Everything happened fast after that. He lurched for me but I ran out of his reach. He gave chase. It was not until I was cornered in the four walls of our room that I saw that he had a gun.
I was bold and very courageous, and would never cower before him but in front of a gun. I was speechless.
“I am going to lock you up forever, where you will never be found” he snarled, sealing his promise with a shot directed at my head.
My wolf was small and sharp, and I quickly dodged. I crawled beneath the center table in my room. I didn't give him time to shoot the gun again. I shoved the heavy oak table at him.
The gun went off but it hit the floor. I completely paralyzed him by repeatedly hitting the table on his head.
The gun fell off his hand to the floor a few steps away from me.
We both dived for it. This was a fight for my life and I Luna Karina, do not plan on losing.
I took the gun and shut him thrice in the chest.
I knew the whole of Crestmoon would be eager to lynch me before they were ready to hear my side of the story. I had planned my escape for months now. I had turned my assets into cash and paid my passageway via a rogue, Robin, who I had struck a deal with. I had reduced his sentencing for this. He prepared the boat. I carried my luggage and stole out into the night.
I was not going to die for killing Alpha Kale. No, not today, not ever.
I had disabled the security system, wore my disguise and took my flight to worlds unknown.
I made sure I took several flights after I alighted from Robin’s deathtrap of an escape. I didn't have a specific destination in mind. It would take a genius to find me as my disguise changed with each territory I got to.
Once I stepped foot in Wolves Creek and I knew I had come home.
