We ended up going to the Wolves Creek library. The library was preserved like a museum. It was empty of werewolves.
“The island is almost empty. The pups growing up here can't wait to be legal. They all leave for better opportunities out there.”
I sighed. “That sounds pathetic.”
“No. If you knew what really happened, you wouldn't say this. Cathy didn't tell you all.”
“Are there more gory details?” I looked around the rolls of shelves filled with dusty books that probably haven't been read in ages.
He led me towards the archive. He went to the specific year and began pulling out magazines and newspaper articles for me to read.
"It was a m******e. The full moon party that had made them finally do a search. Every member of that party had suddenly gone missing. The search had led them to Alpha Carl's house. "
Sheriff Brandon came back to me and dropped a glossy magazine in front of me. It was opened to the picture of a family portrait. The Alpha, his Luna and two young boys.
“Monsters, all of them. My dad always thought they were freaks, and somehow they made it to Alpha position. My dad made sure he killed Alpha Carl himself,” Sheriff Brandon said proudly.
I stared in shock at the family in the paper.
They all had dark hair and deep green forest eyes. Apprehension seeping into my skin. I had seen this very eyes recently.
I stared hard at the youngest boy in the picture. He was so beautiful, and he had a big smile on his face.
It couldn't be?
“What happened to the boys?” I asked.
“Raine and Ralph. They died in the fire. Raine was my friend. He was very weird. His wolf was the fastest amongst us and no one could ever beat him “he said with a tingle of jealousy.
But my brain was calculating: “How old was he when he died?”
“He was five, his brother was older. Raine would have inherited the Carl family's tallness and beauty and continued fooling everyone. Monsters, all of them, wolves eating monsters.
How could this be? One of the boys definitely didn't die. That was all everyone thought. But I had seen this boy..man. It must be Raine.
But it was surprising. If he was indeed a killer, he wouldn't have let me live. He would have eaten me up and no one could have ever found out. They would not have thought.. he existed.
He had succeeded in keeping himself a secret for twenty years. My heart ached. How had he survived? How could they do that to an entire family without proper investigation?
“Since then Wolves Creek didn't have an Alpha. The people just would not appoint another. They disagreed with my father. So we came up with the title of Sheriff, human fashion and my family has been running the island since then. And it has been very peaceful,” He said the last part with a tingle of sadness.
Peaceful indeed but unproductive and unfruitful.
I needed to talk to this blue-eyed monster, Raine Carl or as his title rightfully rang. Alpha Raine Carl.
************
I had a mimicry lunch with Sheriff Brandon at a fast food joint on our way back. He kept on talking about himself. His childhood and his friends and hobbies. But I didn't care.
I was not going to date him anyway. What was the use of the long history?
He soon noticed my lack of interest and allowed me to eat in peace. To which I was grateful.
He dropped me In front of my house, later staring dreamily into my eyes. I never knew my eyes were that charming.
“Do you know the reason why I like you?”
“You like me?”
“Yes. I have several young women after me in and out of the island, but I love women like you. strong and independent.. And I hope you can give us a chance.”
I danced from one foot to the other, eager for him to leave. I had no interest in his dating history.
“We will see about that.”
“I will be back for you,” he stated as he drove out of my driveway.
I breathed a sigh of relief and headed to my apartment. I sent a hasty greeting to Ms Cathy who was watering her flower plants.
I entered my apartment, changed my clothes and made my way into the forest, careful to ensure I wasn't seen.
This time, I had a good knife in my hand. I would make sure to create marks in the trees, so I wouldn't get lost.
I didn't want a repeat of the last time that they had to gather a search party.
And I couldn't draw attention to Raine either.
It was not until I was at the end of the footpath that it registered that I had no knowledge on how to get to that cave.
I could try my luck in wolf form, but I couldn't ruin my clothes and the idea of stripping naked to shift was not appealing due to cold.
I walked several miles in when the lost signal reached my brain. The night light closed in and the lost and hopeless signal found me.
The falling sound of the rain in the sky felt like a curse on me and I tried to run to shelter, but it was useless. The rain blew in a disorderly manner.
Drained and lost. I trudged on. I had barely moved further when I came face to face with a tiger. It's eyes staring straight at me. It stood staring at me.
I froze, I was reluctant to shift, but if I wanted to save my life, my best bet would be shifting and running away for my life. This tiger was no joke
It was huge, and then its eyes were green globes that shone like diamonds.
Startled, I dropped my knife and ran away. The tiger gave chase. I ran for my life, I was on the verge of shifting when it pounced on me. That was the last thing I saw before I lost unconsciousness. His paws standing squarely on my chest pressing me down.
