Chapter 19

“I’m not sure what happened, but I can tell you this, Casey. it’s only too late if you don’t give up. Now get the hell up.” Jade looked down at Casey, her face and voice calm as she spoke. “And how the hell do you know you're just some human.” Casey growled bitterly as she glared at Jade. “Not much in all honesty, cause you're right. I’m a human, but I know if you give up here, there really is no chance. So you can either help or sit the hell down.” Jade glared at her for a moment, waiting to see what she would say, but when Casey didn’t answer, Jade turned her attention to me. “Ill have to go up and get Leia it may take a moment cause she is trying to get the wolf that was left with the witch to talk.” “The wolf was left here? Who is it?” Not waiting for Jade to answer, I sniffed the air, hoping that I would be able to smell the wolf. After a moment, I sighed, the smell of smoke and soot overwhelming my sense of smell. Jade waited, watching me while I tried to see if I could identify the wolf by smell, but when I sighed in defeat she finally answered. “No idea. I don’t recognize them, but I don’t have a lot of people from the pack, so that’s not surprising. Ill be right back. Hang tight.” As Jade disappeared up the stairs, I tried not to stare at Casey as she fought with herself. One moment, she was angry and pacing. Then, in the next moment, she would stop and she would look like she would start crying again. So I instead of watching Casey, I watched the stairs. Standing still, I tried to listen for any sound that would indicate that Jade or Leia were about to come down the stairs. “You must think horribly of me now.” Casey made me jump in surprise as she spoke, her voice quiet and timid. I had been so focused on listening for Jade and Leia, I hadn’t noticed that Casey had stopped and was now looking at me. “No-” “You don’t have to lie.” Letting out a shaky breath, she interrupted me, as she looked away for a moment as she gathered her thoughts. “I need you to understand I grew up with Liam and Alec. My father was the previous Gamma and served under their father, so I was always at the pack house growing up. When we were younger, Alec and Liam were inseparable. Alec used to be so caring and sweet, but then when we were about twelve, their mother died. She was murdered. The story was that she was killed by an enemy pack, but the night it happened, I was staying in the pack house.” “Alec came into my room covered in blood. When I asked what happened, he looked at me and he just stared at me, for a long time not saying anything. I had to force him to sit down on my bed and once he did; he broke down crying on my shoulder. He told me everything.” “His dad was trying to force Liam and Alec to torture someone, and when they refused, he beat them. Their mom had found out and tried to leave with them, so the Alpha killed her in front of them.” “After that night, Alec and Liam were never the same. After that Alec was always cold and distant toward everyone except me then once we were older we began to date I thought he loved me and we would become mates someday…Then the night I found him torturing that girl he told me his dad was making him do it and he begged me not to tell Liam. Like a fool, I believed him and never said a word.” Casey’s eyes glowed yellow, growling with anger and frustration as she spoke. “I ended things after that. I couldn’t unsee Alec torturing that poor girl. I guess deep down I always knew what kind of person he really was.” I stared at Casey in shock for several moments, unsure of what to say or how to respond to everything she had just told me. “Your not a fool Casey. you didnt want to believe that someone you used to love would do something like that. Anything that Alec has done or will do is your fault.” Letting out a sigh she didnt say anything as she looked away lost in thought. “Do you think we have a chance?” “To what? Get there in time to stop Alec’s evil plan? I’m not sure, Casey, but we’re alive, so who the hell knows? I mean, twenty minutes ago I was living a nightmare, so who the hell knows” Before Casey could say anything else, Jade and Leia trudged down the stairs, dragging a woman between them. Pulling her to the middle of the room, they dropped her to the floor, where she sat there for a moment, not moving. The woman in front of me was covered in blood and soot, making her almost unrecognizable. Almost. Taylor’s blonde hair hung limply in her face as she glared at me with a look that would’ve scared the old me. I didn’t look away from Taylor as Leia stepped away from Taylor. Stopping in front of Casey first, she used magic to break the chains binding her before turning to me and doing the same. The chains hit the floor, filling the room with a loud clanging sound, making Taylor jump as she looking down for a moment before her eyes snapped back up to mine, her eyes full of hatred as she growled. “I should’ve killed you when I had the chance.” “I wish things had been different, Taylor. Maybe after all this is over we can come to an understanding, I doubt, it but I hope we can.” I didn’t wait for Taylor to answer. Instead, turning away, I pulled my shirt over my head as I headed for the stairs. “Casey, let’s go. We’re gonna shift. Hopefully, we can get there before Liam releases control of the pack.” Stopping at the bottom of the steps, I looked over my shoulder at Jade and Leia. “Chain her up with magic so she can’t get away or try to stop us. Well, come back later for her. When you're done, haul ass and get to the pack house as quickly as you can. We might need your help. We dont know if Alec has any other wolves working with him.” Not waiting to see if Casey would actually follow, I raced up the stairs as I shoved open the heavy metal doors leading into what had been the old factory. A huge hole was busted into the side of the building. A large piece of machinery lay outside on the ground, surrounded by pieces of brick and metal. “What the f**k?” Casey’s shocked whisper came from behind me, making me jump. Turning around, I followed her eyes to the other side of the building. Brick and metal hung suspended in the air around a woman who lay motionless on the floor next to a broken support beam. “She isn’t dead.” Glancing behind me, Leia and Jade stood behind Casey, peering over her shoulder to see why we had stopped and why were blocking the doorway. “Leia, what happened? Did you do this?” I stared at her, shocked I knew she was strong. But to have cast such a spell and still be standing? For the first time, I understood why most shifters feared witches. Not every witch could do something like this, but if she could cast something like this, what else was she capable of? She met my eyes for a moment before pushing past me to the witch, still motionless on the floor. Crouching down next to her, she lay a hand on her chest speaking quietly in a language i didn’t recognize.. “She isn’t dead Anna, just frozen, but if I hadn’t done this we would all be dead right now.” Where Leia’s hand touched the witch’s chest, it glowed for a moment. Standing up, Leia stepped back, staring down at the still motionless body. But before I could ask what she was doing, the witch’s body rose in the air. “You need to go Anna. we won’t be far behind you. Ill answer any questions later if you still want to know, but for now go.” Leia met my eyes. It took everything in me not to look away. Several tense moments later, she turned away, guiding the floating witch out the door. I got the impression that the little witch in front of me was much older and powerful than she appeared. Casey and i had just shifted taking off into the woods when the ground shook. Skidding to a stop, we looked back in the direction of the old factory. Smoke and dust rose into the air, almost blocking out the sky, but then, just as quickly as it appeared, it was gone. I didn’t have to see it to know that Leia had let the building collapse and then cast some type of spell to get rid of the smoke and dust so humans or anyone else would come investigate. Looking up at the empty sky, I knew two things. I was glad that Leia was on our side and the chances of me asking her anything about magic were slim to none. Caseys nudged me with her nose, letting out a growl, reminding me without words that we had to keep moving. Running through the trees, I knew the moment that we hit pack land. The pack’s scent was stronger, a warning to other shifters that weren’t part of the pack that this area was there’s and they would protect it with their lives if needed. With every step we took, my anxiety grew until I was nothing but a bundle of nerves, the slightest sound from a bird or squirrel making me jump and stumble. Casey reached the pack house before me, stopping at the tree line, unable to go further. Skidding to a stop next to her, I peered through the bushes to see why she had stopped. The whole pack was here, spread out around the outside of the house. The only place without shifters packed together was at the steps leading into the house. Liam and Alec stood next to each other, their heads bent together as they spoke quietly to each other. I stood there frozen, the events of my dream rushing back as I watched the two brothers. If I’m not able to stop this, would he blame me? Would he grow to hate me like the Liam from my dream had? shaking my head, I tried to clear the negative thoughts from my mind as Casey and I shifted, staying crouched behind the bush. Glancing over at Casey, I started to ask what she thought we should do when she gasped, still looking towards where Liam and Alec stood. Turning my attention towards Liam and Alec, I felt myself freeze. They still stood next to each other, but now they were now facing one another. Liam held a knife in his hand and, as we watched, Liam knelt down in front of his brother. “Casey?” Looking over at Casey, unsure of what exactly Liam was doing. “You need to run.” She didn’t take her eyes off Liam and Alec as she spoke, her voice and body ridged. “What? Casey, what’s happening?” Liam slowly raised the knife hovering above his left arm. “Run!” Casey grabbed my arm. She shoved me forward “He’s about to give over the pack to Alec. You have to go to him now!”
