"Where?" Liam growled angrily to the person on the other end of the phone as he paced the room.
“Ill be there as soon as I can.” hanging up the phone, he tossed his phone next to me as he pulled on pants and a t-shirt. The fun that we had been up to before the phone call now forgotten. The person on the other end of the phone had spoken so quietly that even with my shifter hearing, I couldn’t hear anything they said.
“Whats going on?” Liam stiffened his back to me. He didn’t speak for a moment as he gathered his thoughts.
“Jace, he is dealing with some stuff and was calling to ask for advice.”
“So now you're going over there? Mind if I come too? Kate and I didn’t end things the greatest, so I wanna talk to her.” I hadn’t even slid off the bed when Liam stood up, angry.
“NO.” Liam’s eyes were glowing as he looked down at me, but for the first time, it wasn’t because I turned him on.
“What the hell-”
“Just don’t Anna for once, don’t,” Liam’s face softened as he looked at the shocked look on my face. “Theres something that I have to do and I don’t want you there to see it. I’m sorry I understand what you're saying and why you want to go, but not this time.” Leaning down, he kissed me, ignoring the now pissed look on my face as he turned away. Opening the door, he stopped, turning to look at me.
“Stay here please, so with everything else going on I don’t have to worry about you too.” When I didn’t answer, he sighed, closing the door behind him as he left.
“What the hell is going on?” I growled as I plopped down onto the grass next to Casey, trying to ignore the shifters that had been obviously following me ever since I had stepped out of Liam’s room after he left. Rolling on her side, Casey gave me a look before glancing back at the shifters in question.
“I know you're not supposed to know cause Liam ordered everyone not to tell you anything, but can you honestly tell me you can’t guess?” When I didn’t answer, she sighed, sitting up
“Liam suddenly leaves and after days of spending ninety-five percent of your time together up in his room doing who knows what. After a phone call, he leaves, even refusing to take you with him and to top it off. The minute you leave his room, you are immediately followed by shifters everywhere you go. Think about that for a moment Anna,”
“There has been another murder.” Feeling stupid, I growled, laying back on the grass next to Casey. “Why didnt he didnt f*****g tell me?”
“I should think that’s obvious,” a mischievous smile flashed across her face, but just as quickly disappearing. “It wasn’t a small shifter this time, it was a bear shifter.”
“Yea? If it’s so obvious, why don’t you tell me why he didnt tell me?”
“Because he knew if he told you what was going on, you would do one of two things. You would either insist on going with him and put yourself in harm’s way in the processor you would take off while he was gone and also put yourself in harm’s way.”
Liam hadn’t been wrong, that’s exactly what I would’ve done, but if he had told me I probably would’ve gone with him now, I only had one choice.
“and what do you think ill do?”
“I think you’ll do something stupid. I’m not sure exactly what yet, but I know one thing for sure.” Casey grinned again as she stood up, holding a hand out to help me stand.
“Yea, and what’s that?”
“Your not gonna do something stupid without me.”
I had tried to convince Casey not to bother and just let me go by myself, but she refused, saying if Liam would kill her if he found out that she had known and not done anything. Even mentioning Jade and Leia and how a witch would be helping me didn’t dis-wade her. Instead, it seemed to have the opposite effect. Excited, she rushed me inside. Once inside, we headed for Liam’s room so we would be less likely to be overheard.
“Do you have a plan on how I’m supposed to leave, considering I can barely go to the bathroom without them following?” I whispered as I looked at the door, hoping we wouldn’t be overheard. When we had come upstairs, they had apparently given up on trying to make me think they weren’t following me around and followed us into the room, saying they just needed to check things over.
“Your a little fox shifter there not expecting you to go against what Liam wants, so they think the only reason they are being tasked to follow you is to make sure you're safe. We use that against them. Ill leave you, tell them you're gonna take a nice long hot shower and then go to bed before they can even realize anything is wrong. We’ll be long gone.”
“Ok, brilliant plan, but what about everyone else who lives on pack land? don’t they all know I’m supposed to be staying put? Won’t they say something if they see me leaving?”
“Nope. Cause I technically don’t live on pack land, so you’ll make sure they hear when you offer to let me barrow your car. You’ll climb out the window, meet me out front where I’ll be waiting with your. car you climb in the back and lay down in the back until we are off of pack land. Easy peasy.” Casey grinned at me, unfazed by my look of disbelief. For some reason, I didn’t think this would be as easy as she thought it would be.
“Thanks for spending time with me. Heres my keys. That way, you can just drive home instead of shifting and running home.” Handing Casey my keys, I tried to talk normally and to not look at the shifters that now stood at the end of the hall. I’m not sure if it was because I knew it was all an act or because it sounded that way, but it sounded almost forced.
Casey just smiled and started to babble like her normal self. “Thanks girly you are amazing ill be by in the morning with your car and we should hang out some more than if you can pull yourself away from your boy toy long enough to hang out with me that is.” Grinning an almost feral grin she winked at me before turning around and almost skipping past the shifters and down the stairs.
“I’m gonna take a nice hot shower and go to bed unless there is an emergency. Please leave me alone and you can tell Liam I said when he finally gets back, he better leave me alone so I can sleep.” Closing the door, I winced I had added the last part so it would seem more believable. Stepping into the bathroom, I turned on the shower before opening up the window looking out to make sure the coast was clear I listened for my car to start up before pulling myself up onto the sink.
Casey had just pulled out of the garage with my car as I pulled myself up into the window, perching there for a moment as I looked down. Bushes lined the front of the house below me, not giving me much room to jump down without making much noise. Casey stopped the car opening the front door she walked inside leaving the door open so when she stepped back inside to grab her bag that she ‘forgot’ I could slip into the car without opening a door and alerting anyone who was close by and listening.
As she opened the front door and called out to those inside saying she left her bag, I jumped down using the noise she was making to cover the sound of me jumping down. I winced as I landed. I had managed to not land in the bush, but I had still gotten scratched by branches that were sticking out from it. Moving quickly, I had just managed to get in the car and settle down on the floorboard of the back seat when the front door opened. Casey was talking to someone, their voices growing closer as I struggled to cover myself with the blanket in my back seat.
I had just got the blanket in place when they stepped up to the car, still talking as Casey slid into the front seat. Laying there, I realized the person with Casey was Sarah, Micheal’s mate.
“Drive safe, Casey. don’t go too fast as you go down the dirt road.” Sarah’s footsteps began to fade as she walked away when she stopped. “Oh and Anna, make sure you stay laying down until you get to where you're going and please both of you be careful.”
Without waiting for an answer, Sarah left. We sat there until we heard the sound of a door closing as she went back into the house, leaving us sitting there in shock. Neither of us spoke as Casey started the car, driving slowly until we reached the pavement.
“Did she see me when I ran to the car, or did she hear me when I jumped down? How in the hell did she know I was here?”
“I’m not sure in all honesty Anna I didnt even hear you when you jumped down. I don’t see how she could’ve as for seeing you she couldn’t have.”
It was several long minutes before Casey spoke again.
“Ive known Sarah my whole life, and she has always had the uncanny ability to know when you're up to something. Growing up, I was convinced she was a seer. She even helped me get out of some situations that could’ve gotten me into a lot of trouble.”
“Do you think she will tell Liam or Micheal?”
“No, I trust Sarah and if she was going to tell she wouldn’t have said anything, I just hope she doesn’t get in trouble for not saying anything.” I didn’t have to see Casey’s face to know she was worried.
“So what’s the plan? We go see your friends and then what?”
“I’m not completely sure yet, but I’m thinking that we give the person killing shifters exactly what they are asking for.”
“But arent they wanting you?”
“Yep”
The moment I told Casey my plan, she almost turned around, saying that she had agreed to help me, thinking that Leia would be able to do some magic and track down the killer. Not give myself up to the psycho who wanted me dead. I had to remind her that we had the help of a witch who happened to be the strongest in the area, if not the entire state.
“If you're wrong and something happens, I swear to the moon above I will kill you myself.” Casey had growled under her breath, clearly not happy with the plan.
When we got to Leia’s house, it did not surprise me to see Jade’s car in the driveway and even less surprised that, as we closed the car doors, Jade and Leia appeared on the porch. Rushing down the stairs, Jade pulled me into a hug, her expression full of worry.
“Liam just called and said you were missing and that he had people following you and they didnt know where you went or happened!” Sighing I hugged her back “I’m fine, this is Casey she’s a new friend from Liam’s pack she is gonna help us. Did you guys hear anything about the shifter that was killed?” I asked, pulling away from Jade. I looked at Leia, knowing she would know more since she was part of the paranormal community.
“A human was the one to find the body, so she called the police. A member of my coven is a detective and called me to take a look before the shifters got wind of what happened. The killer left you a note at the scene. I’m not sure if they know you are working with me or even if you're working with a witch at all, but it needed a bit of magic to decipher the message.”
Leia handed over a piece of paper. The only thing on it was an address.
“It’s an address?” Casey leaned over my shoulder to read the address, but just as quickly, she pulled back, cursing.
“Thats not just any address,” she growled as she started to pace. “Thats an old factory on the west side of town owned by the pack”
“OK, so what’s that mean?” Jade asked, looking at Casey and me, her face worried
“That means that whoever is doing this is part of the pack.”
