Chapter 17

1640 Words
Someone in Liam’s pack wanted me dead. Those thoughts bounced around my head as Casey and I drove to the address on the piece of paper. My hands shook as they clenched the steering wheel. Even with Leia and Jade were five minutes away, monitoring us with Leia's tracking spell, I felt sick with nerves. Pulling up to the gate of the fence that surrounded the property, I turned off the car. Turning to Casey, I grabbed her, stopping her from exiting the car. “You should stay outside and run the perimeter of the fence. Who ever this is isn’t expecting you and we can use that to our advantage.” Tightening my hand on her arm as I looked at the dark warehouse, searching for movement in the dark windows. “We both know that wouldn’t work, Anna. The person behind all this is not only a shifter but there also part of my pack. They know my scent and will know I’m with you the moment I step out of the car. Thats if they don’t already know hell for all we know, they might be watching us from the windows or with magic. Leia said that the person was working with a witch, right? So we have no idea what is waiting in there, but I can tell you this. You aren’t facing it alone.” Sighing, I released her arm before turning and opening my door. Casey was right even if i didn’t want to admit it she was. We had no idea what we were walking into. One shifter? Two? Not to mention the witch. The odds of me walking out were s**t, but at least they were a bit better with Casey by my side. Casey’s door slammed behind me and before I could stop her, she pulled herself up and over, landing with a thud. She shifted, not bothering to make sure I was following. I had just landed on the other side of the fence when something flew past me, slamming into Casey and send her flying her small wolf body slamming into a brick wall. “Casey!!” Dashing forward, something slammed into me, knocking me to the ground. My head snapping against the ground with a crack. A wolf I didn’t recognize stood over me, slobber dripping from its canines as it growled at me, warning me without words not to move. Black spots swam across my vision as my head throbbed in pain from where my head had collided with the pavement. Two pairs of feet stepped in my line of sight, pausing next to where Casey lay passed out on the ground. “You said it would just be the fox. Why is someone from your pack with her!?” The first voice spoke full of outrage. “Dont worry about her. Ill make her see reason, but if I can’t, then we will dispose of her the same way as the fox. Once I take over the pack, no one will even notice she is gone. They’ll be too focused on Liam and him choosing this pathetic thing over them. They won’t even give her a second thought.” Stopping in front of me, one of them growled, “Lowly Piece of trash.” The person standing closest to me swung their foot forward, slamming into my head the world went black. The first thing I heard as came to was the sound of heavy breathing and metal chains slamming against concrete. “Casey?” squinting I tried to open my eyes wincing in pain as I realized that even with my eyes open I couldn’t see anything. “Casey? Why can’t I see anything?” panic sweeping through me, my first thought that I had somehow gone blind possibly as a result of the blow I had taken to the head. “Dont panic it’s some type of magic the witch came down here and cast a spell not long after I woke up I’m not sure why maybe they think that if we can see Leia might be able to find us with magic or something who knows.” Casey’s chains had gone quiet as she spoke but as she went silent, the sound of them rattling brought my attention to my own. Grasping my wrist, I felt where both cuffs attached to a rusted chain that connected to the cold concrete floor. Running my fingers back up the chain, I inspected each link, running them along every piece, looking for a weak point. Reaching the cuffs around my hand, I sighed, looking in the direction of where Casey sat still messing with her own chains, sounding like she was lifting them before slamming them back down against the concrete as hard as she could. “Did you see who it was?” I asked Casey but as if summoned by my question, a metal door screamed in protest as it was pried open. Foot steps slowly descended toward us, both of us silent, neither one wanting to speak, when suddenly the light flipped on. Flinching away from the light, I flinched, trying to ignore the instant headache pounding inside my head caused by the light. Blinking, I tried to clear away the sun spots that clouded my vision, trying to focus on the person in front of me when Casey spoke. “How? How could you do this?” Casey’s voice broke as she spoke. “Do what? Do what needed to be done? Do what Liam is too weak and naïve to do? Or perhaps you mean how could I betray my own brother?” An almost feral grin spread across Alec’s face as he looked down at Casey and I. Alec is the one killing people. Alec is the one who wants me dead. A numb feeling spread throughout my limbs as I looked up Alec not wanting to believe what I was seeing. “Oh, don’t look so shocked,” laughing Alec picked Casey up by her cuffs holding her there, forcing her to look him in the face. “Casey, you, of all people, should’ve known. After all, it was you who walked in on me torturing that girl in the basement before Liam took over.” “Your father made you do it.” Casey’s voice broke again as the tears she had been holding back streamed down her face. “Grow up, Casey,” Alec growled in her face as he pulled her closer. “I told you that so you wouldn’t run to Liam and tell him what I had been doing. I knew it wouldn’t be long before something happened to my father and didnt want it to get back to Liam what I was up to. I did it because I wanted to. Because we are better than them and they need to know it!” Alec yelled as he pointed at me, not taking his eyes away from Casey’s. “Your wrong.” Before the words were even out of her mouth, Alec threw her to the floor, looking at her with disgust. “Ive always liked you, Casey. I was even hoping that I could make you my Luna when i took over the pack. My father even thought at one point that we would make a good match, but now I see that was a mistake. You're just as worthless as a small shifter i think ill enjoy my time down here with you.” Turning away from Casey, Alec walked towards me with the same feral smile on his face as before. “Anna, you know I have you to thank for all of this. I mean, if it wasn’t for you, I would’ve never gotten this chance! I’m not nearly as strong as Liam, so as much as I would’ve loved to challenge him and take over the pack that way, it just wasn’t in the cards for me.” Crouching down, he ran his fingers along the chain, holding me to the floor. “You know I had all but given up on carrying on my father’s legacy, I even decided to leave! I didn’t have to watch as my brother ruined everything my father created. But then I find you.” Grabbing my face roughly, Alec pulls me forward, no longer smiling, his face now full of rage. “Or rather, my brother finds you, I should say. His fated mate,” growling he shoved me away. Looking down at me he sneared. “He could’ve had anyone he wanted, a wolf, bear, tiger. Anyone but no, he chose you a lowly little fox with an attitude problem. The moment he chose you was the moment I knew. I finally found a way to get everything I’ve ever wanted! But to make my dream a reality, I would either have to get rid of Liam or get rid of the trust the pack has in him. The big question was how to go about doing that? I couldn’t just kill him no, that wouldn’t fix the real problem.” Alec started to ramble, his excitement growing with every word he spoke, an almost crazed look on his face. “He has the faith and love of the pack they wouldn’t accept going back to the way things used to be. No.” Stopping in the middle of the room, a calm look spread across his face, across his face as he slowly turned to face me “The answer was right in front of me. I had to make him choose his mate or his pack. So once I had you, I sent a message to every pack member, so they all knew he had two choices give up leadership of the pack or save you.”
