Blurb

Detective Kaila Cortex is assigned to investigate the brutal murder of a prominent businessman, whose body is found in a seedy hotel room in the heart of the city. As Kaila begins to dig into the case, she realizes that the crime scene has been tampered with, and there are signs that someone within the police department is working to cover up the true motive behind the killing.

Kaila is a talented detective with a reputation for being tough but fair. However, she soon finds that she is at odds with many of her fellow officers, who seem more interested in protecting their own than solving the case. As she struggles to unravel the complex web of lies and corruption that surrounds the murder, she becomes increasingly isolated, with even her closest allies beginning to question her motives.

The investigation takes Kaila down a dark path as she uncovers evidence of a powerful criminal organization that has infiltrated the police department. She finds herself up against some of the most dangerous people in the city, including a charismatic but ruthless mob boss and a high-ranking police officer with ties to the criminal underworld.

As the case heats up, Kaila is forced to confront her own demons, including a painful past that has left her with a deep sense of mistrust and a tendency to push people away. But she knows that the only way to solve the case and bring the killer to justice is to keep digging, no matter the cost.

As the tension mounts and the stakes get higher, Kaila must navigate a complex web of alliances and betrayals to bring the killer to justice and expose the corrupt cops who are standing in her way. Along the way, she learns that the price of justice can be steep, and that sometimes the only way to make a difference is to fight against the system from within

Corrupt Intentions
Kaila Cortex sat in her unmarked police cruiser, staring at the rundown hotel across the street. She had been on the job for 15 years, but the sight of another crime scene still made her stomach churn. It was the fifth murder case she had been assigned to in the past six months, and the city was starting to feel like a war zone again. Kaila had seen her share of gruesome crime scenes, but something about this one felt different. The hotel was a seedy joint, the kind of place where drug dealers and prostitutes hung out. But the victim was a well-dressed businessman, his expensive suit and watch standing out against the dingy backdrop of the hotel room. The murder weapon, a small knife, was still embedded in his chest. Kaila took a deep breath and stepped out of the car. She was a small woman, barely five feet tall, but she had a presence that demanded respect. She had worked hard to get where she was, earning a reputation as a tough but fair detective who didn't take any crap from anyone. As she approached the hotel, she saw a group of uniformed officers standing outside the room, looking grim. Kaila recognized a few of them from the precinct, but most were strangers. She knew that her fellow officers were not always happy to see her, especially when she was assigned to a case, but she refused to let their disapproval get to her. "Detective Cortex," one of the officers said, nodding at her. "The captain's inside waiting for you." Kaila nodded and ducked under the yellow police tape. She walked past the onlookers and into the hotel room, her eyes scanning the scene for any clues. The room was small, barely big enough for a bed and a dresser, and it was cluttered with empty beer bottles, cigarette butts, and drug paraphernalia. The victim was lying on the bed, his eyes wide open and staring at the ceiling. Kaila could see that he was in his mid-forties, with dark hair and a neatly trimmed beard. He had the look of someone who had worked hard to get where he was, but now all that hard work had been cut short. Kaila approached the bed and studied the victim's wounds. The knife had been plunged deep into his chest, piercing his heart. She could see that the blade was serrated, which meant that the killer had wanted to inflict as much pain as possible. She took out her notepad and began to jot down notes, trying to piece together what had happened. The victim's name was Robert Shawn, a successful businessman who owned several properties in the city. According to the hotel manager, he had checked into the room alone the night before and had not been seen since. Kaila looked around the room, searching for any clues that might point to the killer. She saw a small bag on the dresser, with a few personal items inside. She also noticed a photo on the nightstand, showing the victim with a woman and two young children. She was about to take a closer look at the photo when she heard a voice behind her. "Detective Cortex." Kaila turned around to see Captain Gregs standing in the doorway, his arms crossed over his chest. He was a tall man with a stern face, and he had a reputation for being one of the most hard-nosed cops in the department. "Captain," Kaila said, trying to keep the irritation out of her voice. She knew that Gregs didn't like her, but she refused to let him intimidate her. "I hear you're in charge of this case," Gregs said, his eyes bored. "Yes, sir," Kaila said. "I have just arrived and was examining the crime scene." "Well, don't waste too much time," Gregs said, stepping further into the room. "We need to catch this killer fast. The city is already on edge with all these murders happening." Kaila nodded, her eyes meeting Gregs 's for a moment before she turned back to the victim. She knew that Gregs was right - they needed to find the killer quickly, before another innocent person was murdered. But she also knew that rushing through the investigation could lead to mistakes, and she didn't want to miss any important clues. "I understand, sir," Kaila said. "But we need to be thorough if we want to catch the killer." Gregs snorted. "Thorough? That's just an excuse to waste time. You better not let this case slip through your fingers, Cortex." With that, Gregs turned and left the room, leaving Kaila alone with the victim. She sighed and took another look around the room, hoping to find something that could lead them to the killer. As she examined the photo on the nightstand, something caught her eye. It was a small piece of paper, tucked underneath the frame. Kaila carefully lifted the photo and retrieved the paper, unfolding it to reveal a handwritten note. Meet me at the Red Door, it read. Tonight at 10 PM. Kaila's heart raced as she read the note. It was the first real lead they had in the case, and she knew that she needed to investigate it immediately. She looked at her watch - it was already 9 PM. She didn't have much time. Quickly, Kaila gathered her belongings and made her way out of the hotel room. She found a quiet corner of the lobby and dialed her partner, Detective John Walters. "Walters, it's Cortex," she said when he answered. "We have a lead on Shawn's case. Meet me at the Red Door in 30 minutes." "The Red Door?" Walters said, surprise evident in his voice. "That's one of the most notorious bars in the city. What are we looking for?" "I'm not sure yet," Kaila said. "But we have to follow up on this lead. I'll explain everything when we meet." "Alright," Walters said. "I'll be there." Kaila hung up the phone and quickly made her way out of the hotel. She knew that she was taking a risk by going to Red Door, but she was determined to catch the killer, no matter what it took. As she drove through the city, Kaila's mind raced with possibilities. Who had written the note? Was it the killer? Or was it someone who knew something about the murder? She knew that she wouldn't have all the answers until she arrived at Red Door. Finally, she pulled up in front of the bar, her heart racing with anticipation. The Red Door was a dingy place, with loud music blaring from inside and a group of rough-looking men loitering outside. She took a deep breath and stepped out of the car, making her way inside. The bar was crowded, with a mix of shady characters and regulars. Kaila scanned the room, trying to find someone who might have written the note. Suddenly, she saw a man sitting at the bar, nursing a drink. Something about him seemed familiar, and she felt a pang of recognition. She approached the man cautiously, her hand on her gun. "Excuse me," she said. "Do you know anything about a note that was left for Robert Shawn?" The man looked up at her, his eyes narrowed. "What's it to you?" he said. "I'm Detective Cortex," Kaila said, flashing her badge. " The man's eyes flickered with recognition as he saw Kaila's badge. "Detective Cortex," he said slowly. "I didn't know the police were interested in Shawn's case." "We're very interested," Kaila said, keeping her voice steady. "And we're following up on every lead. Now, do you know anything about the note?" The man hesitated, his eyes darting around the room. Maria could tell that he was weighing his options, deciding whether to cooperate or not. She hoped that he would make the right decision. Finally, the man sighed and turned back to Kaila. "Alright," he said. "I left the note for Shawn." "Why?" she asked, her interest piqued. The man leaned in closer, his voice lowering to a whisper. "He owed me money," he said. "A lot of money. I thought that if I could meet him in person, I could convince him to pay up." Kaila frowned. "So you were trying to extort him?" The man shrugged. "I prefer to think of it as a business arrangement. But when I got to the hotel room, I found him dead. I panicked and left the note." She felt a surge of anger as she heard the man's words. Shawn had been killed because of his debts - it was a senseless and tragic way to die. "Alright," she said, her voice tight with frustration. "I'm going to need you to come down to the station and answer some more questions. And if you know anything else about the murder, now would be a good time to tell me." The man nodded, looking relieved that he wasn't going to be arrested on the spot. Kaila escorted him out of the bar and into her car, heading back to the police station to continue the investigation. As she drove, kaila's mind raced with possibilities. The man at the bar had given them a new lead, but it was just the beginning. She knew that they still had a long way to go before they caught the killer, but she was determined to see the case through to the end. Finally, she pulled into the police station and escorted the man into an interrogation room. She settled in across from him, ready to start asking the tough questions. This was just the beginning of a long and complicated investigation, but she was ready for the challenge. Kaila sat across from the man in the interrogation room, studying his face carefully. He was a slim man with dark hair and piercing blue eyes. She had seen his type before - the kind of person who was always looking for an angle, always trying to make a quick buck. She knew that she needed to tread carefully with him. "So, let's start at the beginning," Kaila said, leaning forward slightly. "How did you know Shawn?" The man sighed, looking down at his hands. "We went way back," he said, his voice laced with regret. "We used to run in the same circles, you know? But then Shawn got into some trouble, and I was the one who bailed him out. After that, he owed me a big lot." Kaila raised an eyebrow. "What kind of trouble?" The man hesitated, looking up at her warily. "Just...stuff," he said vaguely. "I can't get into it." Kaila leaned back in her chair, assessing the man. She knew that he was holding something back, but she didn't want to push him too hard just yet. "Okay," she said slowly. "So, you left the note for Shawn. Why didn't you just call him or go see him in person?" The man shrugged. "I figured it was easier to leave a note. I didn't want to waste any more time on him than I had to." Kaila nodded, making a note in her notebook. "And when you went to the hotel room, what did you see?" The man's eyes flickered with guilt. "He was dead," he said flatly. "I don't know how it happened. I swear, I didn't do it." Kaila leaned forward again. "And you didn't see anyone else in the room?" The man shook his head. "No, it was just him. And the note." She studied the man's face carefully, looking for any signs of deception. She didn't find anything overt, but there was something about the man that made her uneasy. She decided to press him a bit harder. "What was the nature of your business with Bennett?" Kaila asked, her voice firm. The man shifted in his seat, looking uncomfortable. "Like I said, it was just a business arrangement. Nothing illegal or anything." Kaila leaned forward again, her eyes narrowing. "I find that hard to believe," she said bluntly. "You left a note demanding payment, and then Shawn turns up dead. I think there's more to this than you're letting on." The man glared at her, his eyes flashing with anger. "I told you, I didn't kill him!" he shouted. "I loved Shawn like a brother. I would never do anything to hurt him." Kaila raised an eyebrow. "Then why did you leave the note?" He hesitated, looking down at his hands. "I needed the money," he admitted finally. "I was in a bad spot, and I thought maybe he would be able to help me out. I never meant for any of this to happen." Kaila studied the man's face for a moment, trying to decide if she believed him. She knew that people could be motivated by all sorts of things - money, jealousy, revenge. But something about the man's story didn't quite add up. "Alright," she said, in her firm voice. "You're free to go for now, but don't leave town. And if you think of anything else that might be helpful, give me a call." The man nodded, looking relieved. He stood up and walked out of the interrogation room, leaving Kaila alone with her thoughts. As she sat there, Kaila couldn't help but feel frustrated. She knew that the man was holding something back, but she couldn't quite put her finger on what it was. She made a mental note to review the security footage of the hotel again, hoping that it might provide some answers. As she walked out of the interrogation room, Kaila felt a sense of relief wash over her. She had been nervous about handling the case on her own, but so far, things seemed to be going well. But just as she was about to head back to her office, her phone rang. It was her boss, Captain Gregs. "Kaila, we've got a problem," Gregs said without preamble. "The Governor's office has been calling, demanding to know what progress we've made on Shawn's case. They're getting antsy, and we need to show them that we're on top of things." Kaila felt a knot form in her stomach. The last thing she wanted was to be in the middle of a political firestorm. "What do you want me to do?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady. "I want you to find something - anything - that we can use to show that we're making progress," Gregs said firmly. "We can't afford to let this case go cold." Kaila hung up the phone and took a deep breath, trying to gather her thoughts. She knew that Gregs was right - they couldn't afford to let the case go unsolved. But she also knew that rushing to find a suspect could lead them down the wrong path. She decided to take a walk, hoping that some fresh air would help clear her head. As she walked down the street, she found herself thinking about Shawn. He had been a successful businessman, with a seemingly perfect life. But now, he was dead, and she still had no idea who had killed him. She stopped in front of a coffee shop and decided to go in. As she waited in line, she noticed a man sitting at a table, staring intently at his laptop. There was something familiar about him, but she couldn't quite place it at first. As she ordered her coffee, the man glanced up and their eyes caught. Kaila felt a jolt of recognition - it was the man from the interrogations earlier. He looked away quickly, pretending not to have seen her. But Kaila knew that she had to talk to him again. She grabbed her coffee and walked over to his table. "Mind if I join you?" she asked, trying to keep her tone casual. The man hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Sure," he said, gesturing to the chair across from him. Kaila sat down, feeling a surge of adrenaline. She knew that she was taking a risk, but she also knew that she needed to find out more about the man. "Hi! I'm Kaila, we didn't exchange pleasantries earlier" she said, extending her hand. The man shook her hand, his eyes darting around nervously. "I'm Alex," he said, his voice shaking slightly. Kaila studied him carefully, trying to get a read on him. She could sense that he was holding something back, but she wasn't sure what. "I know this is a bit forward," Kaila said, trying to sound as friendly as possible. "But I was wondering if you could help me out with some additional information that could be helpful." Alex's eyes widened. "I don't know anything," he said quickly. "I already told you everything I know." Kaila nodded, trying to keep her tone gentle. "I know, but sometimes people remember things later on that they didn't realize were important at the time. And I think you might be one of those people. If you could just take a few minutes to talk with me, it could make all the difference." Alex shifted in his seat, clearly uncomfortable. Kaila could tell that he was hiding something, but she wasn't sure what it was. She decided to try a different approach. "Look, Alex, I'm not here to accuse you of anything," she said, trying to sound reassuring. "I just want to find out what happened to Shawn. And I think that you might be able to help me do that." He hesitated for a moment, then sighed. "Okay," he said finally. "What do you want to know?" Kaila leaned forward, trying to appear as non-threatening as possible. "Can you tell me anything about Shawn's activities in the days leading up to his death? Did you notice anything suspicious or out of the ordinary?" He shook his head. "I'm sorry, I really don't know anything," he said. Kaila decided to press a little harder. "Are you sure about that, Alex? You seemed pretty nervous in the interrogation room. Is there something you're not telling me?" Alex looked down at his hands, avoiding Kaila's gaze. "I don't want to get involved," he said softly. "I've got a family to think about. I can't risk anything happening to them." Kaila felt a pang of sympathy for him. She knew how difficult it could be to balance the demands of the job with the needs of a family. But she also knew that they couldn't afford to let a killer go free. "Alex, I understand that you're worried about your family," she said gently. "But we need your help to solve this case. Shawn is your friend, you claimed to love him. He deserves justice, and we can't give that to him if we don't know what happened." Alex looked up at her, his eyes filled with fear. "I don't know what you want me to say," he said, his voice trembling. Kaila took a deep breath, steeling herself for what she was about to do. "Alex, I'm going to be straight with you," she said firmly. "If you don't tell me what you know, I'm going to have to bring you in for questioning over again. And I can't promise that things will go well for you if that happens." Alex paled, his eyes widening in fear. Kaila knew that she had crossed a line, but she also knew that she had to do whatever it took to solve the case...
