They were walking down the school hallway, he and his friend Fenrir, in whose house Ethan was staying. His friend was a small boy, thin and somewhat pale, with tousled, spiky black hair, which gave him a sloppy look and a face that almost always seemed to be bored, because the boy's dark eyes were constantly indifferent, framed by rather long eyelashes, in short, his appearance made him look even more like a child than his mere fourteen years. He looked fragile. Ethan saw him as a kind of younger brother who needed to be protected, but did not let Fenrir know of this fact.
They approached others of their friends, Jack and Arthur. Jack was a fat boy and generally energetic, he was usually seen wearing that ridiculous beanie with ears and was talking about some kind of dream he had, with super powers as usual. Arthur seemed to listen without much appreciating his friend's narrative. Arthur was a boy of medium height but stocky, his hair was bleached at the top, with the roots and sideburns in its original black and slicked back.
"Hey, so you guys arrived!" Said Jack when he saw them coming, "just in time for you to hear the coolest part of my dream!". He seemed to think Ethan was really interested.
"Oh, wait a minute," Fenrir asked, without changing his tone of voice. "Let me try to guess. Well, you had powers and we were fighting something very powerful. We were all defeated and you beat the creature alone, saving us and the world. Am I wrong?"
"Yeah, you are wrong!" Jack replied, looking angry.
"True, that's right, I forgot the part where you get the girl", shrugged Fenrir. Jack frowned.
Already on the bus, where the students were, Ethan noticed a little girl staring at him. He had never seen her before, nor did the teachers introduce her as a supposed new student, she was a total mystery. It was a girl with short orange hair, the shrewd eyes were a purple color, on her face an expression of strange interest, she looked to be around twelve, too young for Ethan's liking, at sixteen, which bothered the boy a little.
He stopped thinking about that weird girl when he got off the bus. Fenrir complained about not feeling comfortable with so many teenagers outdoors. It was true, many students were there that day, all of them now off the buses were meeting their friends. At this time, Ethan and the others saw some of his other friends, Sam and Miguel. Sam was a short boy with dyed red hair under a wool cap, wore earrings in his ears and was usually seen with headphones. Miguel was thin and very tall, dark-skinned, with curly hair and wore perfectly buttoned clothes and generally played the know-it-all. Because of that, he was arguing with a smart girl named Victoria. She, in turn, was accompanied by the weirdest boy in school, named Bruno, who was known pejoratively as Duck Soup and Ethan didn't know exactly why, and she was maybe his only friend. He was a boy with sunburned skin, a thin but dark moustache, cross-eyed, a hooked nose, hair that tried to be combed but always seemed to mess itself up. Sometimes when he looked at him, Ethan had a sudden urge to laugh, at his bad style of dress, pants at his navel, leaving his thick, hairy shins sticking out, and he wore old childish papete sandals on his almost diry feets, with big, long and unkempt nails.
"Yoshi!" Jack exclaimed when he saw them there and interrupted Miguel's conversation, "you guys will want to hear this. I had a new dream about my powers".
"Oh no, not again", Fenrir complained.
"Seriously, this time it's different" Jack explained himself, "it's like... it's some kind of warning. Yes, I think something will change for me".
"Change how? Will you acquire and use your powers now?" Miguel asked sarcastically. "Look, the day you have these powers, I will kiss Duck Soup's buttocks". The others laughed, Bruno complained and told them not to involve him in this.
"I don't know, huh" Fenrir said, without sketching reactions, "I think Miguel wanted to find an excuse for this… 'affectionate gesture'. Still a better love story than twilight". The boys laughed, except Miguel.
"Hilarious, man," complained the tall boy.
After they put their bags in the place where they would spend the weekend, Ethan saw the little girl from before again, looking at him with strange interest. For some reason, Ethan decided to talk to her, ask her what she wanted. She gave him that same shrewd look as always, with that half smile that seemed almost mocking, and spoke:
"If you don't want this... 'camp' to turn into a slasher film, then meet me near the wooden bridge at 5pm. Take some of your friends."
