THE MAN MY MOTHER FEARED
Serena couldn't move.
She stood behind the kitchen window, staring at the black car parked across the street.
Damian Romano was still inside.
Watching.
Her mother's hand tightened around her wrist.
“Don't look at him.”
Serena slowly turned.
“Mom, you know him.”
Her mother looked away.
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain it to me.”
“I can't.”
“You just told me to stay away from him, but you won't tell me why.”
Her mother picked up the broken pieces of the cup.
“Because some truths are safer when they're buried.”
Serena knelt beside her.
“Dad's death wasn't an accident, was it?”
Her mother stopped moving.
That silence was enough.
Serena's heart broke.
“You knew.”
“I suspected.”
“For six years?”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“From who?”
Her mother looked at her.
“From the Romano family.”
Serena's stomach tightened.
“What did Dad have to do with them?”
Her mother whispered:
“Everything.”
Before Serena could ask another question, the sound of a car door closing came from outside.
Her mother immediately stood.
“Serena, go upstairs.”
“Why?”
“Now.”
A knock sounded at the front door.
Three slow knocks.
Her mother's face became pale.
Serena stared at her.
“Who is it?”
Her mother didn't answer.
The knocking came again.
Three times.
Then a man's voice came through the door.
“Mrs. Blake.”
Serena recognized it.
Damian.
Her heart began pounding.
Her mother whispered:
“Don't open that door.”
But Serena was already walking toward it.
---
DAMIAN ROMANO
Serena opened the door.
Damian stood on the porch wearing a perfectly fitted black suit.
No umbrella.
Yet not a drop of rain touched him.
Two men stood several feet behind him.
Serena looked at them.
Then at Damian.
“You came to my house.”
“Yes.”
“My mother doesn't want you here.”
“I know.”
“Then leave.”
Damian's eyes moved past her.
He looked directly at her mother.
“Mrs. Blake.”
Her mother stepped forward.
“Damian.”
There was something in the way she said his name.
Not anger.
Not hatred.
Fear.
Damian entered without waiting for an invitation.
Serena immediately stepped in front of him.
“You can't just walk into someone's house.”
He looked down at her.
“I can.”
“That's arrogant.”
“Yes.”
She stared.
“You admit it?”
“I've never denied it.”
Her mother closed the door.
“Why are you here?”
Damian looked at her.
“Because someone tried to kill your daughter last night.”
Serena's eyes widened.
“What?”
Her mother looked at him.
“You promised.”
“I promised your husband.”
The room became silent.
Serena's heart pounded.
“My father?”
Damian nodded.
“He asked me to protect you.”
Her mother's eyes filled with tears.
“You were supposed to stay away from us.”
“I did.”
“For six years.”
“I had no choice.”
Serena looked between them.
“Someone please explain what is happening.”
Damian turned toward her.
“Your father and I had an agreement.”
“What kind?”
“A protection agreement.”
“Why would my father need protection?”
Damian's expression hardened.
“Because he knew something he shouldn't have known.”
“What?”
“Who was behind the city's largest criminal network.”
Serena swallowed.
“And?”
“He discovered the truth.”
Her mother whispered:
“That's why they killed him.”
---
THE SECRET
Serena sat down.
Her legs felt weak.
“My father knew who they were?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Damian looked at her.
“Victor Moretti.”
The name meant nothing to Serena.
“Who is he?”
“A man who controls businesses, politicians, police officers, and criminals.”
Her mother looked frightened.
“And your father discovered his operation.”
Serena shook her head.
“Why didn't he go to the police?”
Damian gave a bitter smile.
“Because half the police worked for Victor.”
Serena stared at him.
“Then what did Dad do?”
“He collected evidence.”
“Where is it?”
“I don't know.”
Damian's eyes remained fixed on her.
“But Victor believes you do.”
Serena's blood ran cold.
“I don't have anything.”
“Maybe not knowingly.”
“What does that mean?”
Damian stepped closer.
“Your father trusted you.”
“He was my father.”
“He left something with you.”
Serena shook her head.
“Nothing.”
“Think.”
“I don't know!”
Her voice cracked.
Damian's expression softened slightly.
“Take your time.”
Serena closed her eyes.
Memories flooded her mind.
Her father teaching her to ride a bicycle.
Her sixth birthday.
The night he hugged her before leaving for work.
Then one memory stopped her.
A small wooden box.
Her father had given it to her when she was seventeen.
She had forgotten about it.
Serena opened her eyes.
“The box.”
Damian immediately noticed the change in her expression.
“What box?”
“My father gave me a box.”
“Where is it?”
“I don't know.”
Her mother stared at her.
“Serena…”
“What?”
Her mother's face had gone pale.
“I thought you lost it.”
“I never opened it.”
“Where is it?”
Serena thought.
“Storage.”
Damian's expression became serious.
“Where?”
“My father's old office.”
“Take me there.”
Serena frowned.
“Why?”
“Because we need to find it before Victor does.”
---
THE OLD OFFICE
An hour later, Serena stood outside her father's abandoned office.
The building had been closed for years.
Dust covered the windows.
The sign above the entrance had faded.
Her father had once owned a small transportation company.
Now it was nothing but an empty building.
Damian walked beside her.
“You're sure it's here?”
“Yes.”
She unlocked the door.
The smell of dust and old paper filled the room.
Serena walked toward the back.
Her father's office was exactly as she remembered it.
The old desk.
The bookshelf.
The framed family photograph.
She touched the photograph.
Her father smiled from behind the glass.
“I miss him.”
Damian stood beside her.
“I know.”
She looked at him.
“You knew him well?”
“Better than you think.”
“What was he like?”
Damian's eyes softened.
“Honest.”
Serena smiled.
“He was.”
“Brave.”
“Yes.”
“Stubborn.”
She laughed softly.
“Definitely.”
For a moment, Damian smiled.
It disappeared almost immediately.
“Where's the box?”
Serena searched the desk.
Nothing.
She opened the drawers.
Nothing.
Then she remembered.
“The floor.”
“What?”
“My father used to hide important things beneath the floor.”
Damian moved toward the desk.
He examined the wooden boards.
Then he found a loose one.
He pulled it up.
A small black box was hidden underneath.
Serena's heart raced.
“That’s it.”
Damian reached for it.
Before he could touch it—
BANG!
The window shattered.
Damian grabbed Serena and pulled her to the floor.
Another shot hit the wall.
“Stay down!”
Men rushed into the building.
Damian's security team immediately responded.
Serena heard shouting.
Footsteps.
Glass breaking.
Then silence.
Damian stood.
“Are you hurt?”
Serena shook her head.
“No.”
He looked at her carefully.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
He reached down and picked up the box.
“Then we're leaving.”

THE MESSAGE
They returned to Damian's mansion.
Serena sat in the library while Damian examined the box.
There was no lock.
Only a small inscription.
FOR SERENA.
Her hands trembled.
“Open it.”
She did.
Inside was a necklace.
A photograph.
And a folded letter.
Serena picked up the letter.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Her father's.
She began reading.
> My darling Serena,
If you are reading this, then something has happened to me.
There are things I couldn't tell you because knowing the truth would put your life in danger.
Trust your mother.
And if Damian Romano has found you, listen to him.
He is the only man I trusted with your life.
Serena stopped.
She looked at Damian.
“You?”
He didn't speak.
She continued reading.
> There is one thing you must never forget.
The enemy isn't always the person standing against you.
Sometimes the greatest enemy is the person standing beside you.
Serena's heart raced.
Then she read the final sentence.
> And whatever happens, never give the necklace to Victor.
Serena looked down at the necklace.
A tiny symbol was engraved on it.
Damian's expression changed the moment he saw it.
“What?”
He stared at the necklace.
“Where did your father get that?”
“I don't know.”
Damian stepped closer.
“Serena…”
His voice was suddenly different.
“What?”
“That symbol belongs to my family.”
She stared at him.
“What?”
Before he could explain, his phone rang.
Damian answered.
“What?”
A man's voice came through.
Damian's face became cold.
“Say that again.”
Serena watched him.
“What happened?”
He slowly lowered the phone.
“Victor knows you're with me.”
Her heart dropped.
“And?”
Damian looked directly into her eyes.
“He's coming.”
A distant explosion shook the mansion.
The lights went out.
Serena screamed.
Damian immediately pulled her into his arms.
“Stay behind me.”
Outside, gunfire erupted.
Damian's men shouted.
Then a message appeared on the security monitor.
GIVE US THE GIRL.
Damian's expression became deadly.
He looked at Serena.
“No one is taking you.”
And somewhere outside the mansion, Victor Moretti smiled.
Because he knew something Damian didn't.
The necklace wasn't just evidence.
It was the key to a empire
