Chapter one
Lillian’s POV. “You disgusting fool!” Sergio’s voice thundered through the room. For a moment, I froze, stunned. Fool? Me? Shouldn’t I be the one screaming, not him? “How many times have I told you to knock before entering?” he snapped, dragging his trousers up in a rush. My gaze shifted to the bed, and my world shattered. Melissa didn't even bother reaching for the blanket. She stood there completely exposed, wearing nothing except the satisfied smile on her face. Tears burned behind my eyes. Don’t cry. Don’t give them that. But the ache in my chest was unbearable. Nothing could have prepared me for this. I bit my lip until I tasted blood, fighting to keep the scream lodged in my throat. My sister, the one I shielded, the one I would have set the world on fire to see her happy, now lay in my husband’s bed. Stealing what little happiness I had left. And the cruelest part? She wasn’t even sorry. Her eyes glittered with triumph. “The next time you do this, I swear you’ll regret it,” Sergio growled, standing right in front of me now. The only word I managed was, “Why?” He let out a bitter laugh, shaking his head. Then he turned toward Melissa, smirking. “Can you hear your sister? She’s asking me why.” Sergio’s gaze snapped back to me, cold and merciless. “Since you want to know, I’ll tell you. Liliana, you’re wicked.” I gasped, “Wicked?” “Yes!” he barked. “Three years. Three f*****g years, and still no child! Do you want the pack to laugh at me? Do you want people to say, the Alpha can’t sire an heir?” I blinked twice, struggling to process his words. My chest tightened so hard I thought I’d break. “How… how is this my fault? The doctor said I’m fine. It must be a test from the Moon Goddess…” He cut me off with a cruel laugh, the sound mocking. “A test? Do you even hear yourself? You sound insane.” Before I could respond, Melissa rose from the bed, completely naked, and walked to him with no shame. She slid into his arms as if I didn’t exist, and kissed him deeply, right there in front of me. My heart shattered in silence. Her eyes met mine, gleaming with mockery. “Well, at least she finally knows. No more hiding.” Her gaze swept deliberately to my stomach. “Barren queens love making drama… but can’t give pups from their rotten wombs.” “Melissa!” I snapped, rage surging as I lifted my hand to slap her. But Sergio caught my hands. His eyes burned with anger. “You wouldn’t dare lay a hand on the mother of my unborn child.” My eyes widened in shock, darting from his face to her stomach. Melissa’s smile was triumphant, poisonous. She rubbed her flat belly as though it were a crown. “Yes,” she purred, “I’m pregnant. What you failed to give my dear Alpha in three years, I gave him in a year.” My legs weakened, and I stumbled, catching myself on the nearest chair. My chest hurts so bad, I thought I might break apart. I didn’t know what hurt more, hearing that she was pregnant… or realizing they had been betraying me for an entire year. “Get dressed, honey. Let’s go out,” Sergio said, and Melissa giggled. She slipped into her clothes quickly, then looked at me with a smirk. “I need some fresh air before someone’s evil eyes touch my child.” I swallowed hard as she brushed against my shoulder on her way out. The door shut behind them, and the strength left my body. I collapsed onto the floor, tears pouring down my face. I wished it was a nightmare. I wished I would wake up and find my husband still loved me, that he hadn’t betrayed me with my own sister. But the pain told me this was real. A knock came at the door. “What is it?” I snapped, my voice hoarse. “Ma’am, the dress for your anniversary is ready. If we don’t get you dressed now, you’ll miss the surprise party you planned.” “Get out,” I barked. “Ma’am….” “I said get out!” I screamed, my voice breaking. “Leave me alone! Go away!” I fell back to the floor, hands pressed over my ears, sobs shaking through me. “Go away!” Today was supposed to be my anniversary. And this…this betrayal, was the gift the Moon Goddess chose for me? I prayed for a child, not this. Even if my husband had to betray me… why did it have to be with her? Why my sister? Melissa was all I had left. When our parents died, she was only ten and I was fifteen. I became her mother. I gave up my own childhood just to give her a chance at happiness. As a rogue, life was already hard. But I told myself her smile was worth every sacrifice. I turned down countless proposals because no man wanted to take in a little girl who wasn’t his blood. But Sergio… Sergio promised she could live with us. He promised he understood. If only I had known….If only I could see the future. A scream ripped from my throat before I could stop it. “Moon Goddess! What have I done to deserve this?” Another scream followed. I didn’t know how long I had been lying there. By the time I opened my eyes, the room was dark, and I could hear the giggles of Sergio and Melissa in the hall. I sniffed, wiped my face, and forced myself to stand. They don't deserve my tears. The door opened, flooding the room with light. Melissa flinched when she saw me, then sneered. "You wombless runt. What are you still doing here?" I ignored her. My gaze settled on Sergio. The silver mating ring on my finger suddenly felt heavier than chains. For three years, I had worn it with pride. Now it only reminded me of every promise he had broken. Without taking my eyes off him, I slipped the ring from my finger. The tiny band landed between us with a sharp metallic clang. "I want a divorce." His eyes widened. "What did you just say?" I opened my mouth to repeat myself, but before a word could leave my lips, he crossed the distance between us. My back slammed into the wall as his hand clamped around my throat. "You want freedom?" His voice was low, deadly. "Never. You are mine, Liliana. You will die as my mate. Even in death, you'll belong to me.”
