When Anthony and I reach the hotel, I hesitate outside of my door. I take down my block to our link, and an intense wave of sadness washes over me. Anthony can sense this, and takes my keycard out of my shaking hands and opens the door for me. The lamp next to the bed is on, and Alex is curled up into a ball hugging my pillow. I take off my dress, slip one of his tshirts on and crawl into bed beside him. I take the pillow away and replace it with my body. I pull his head onto my chest and stroke his hair out from his face. He wraps an arm around my stomach and pulls himself closer. His soft sobs release into the side of my neck and his hand holds me close.
‘I’m sorry. I didn’t know what was happening.’ I can hear the pain in his voice through our link.
‘I know.’
‘What happened?’
‘I kicked her ass. Turns out she had a boyfriend that was at the bar too.’
‘Did he hurt you?’
‘No. He left when I told him what happened.’
‘I love you.’
‘And I love you.’ I kiss the top of his head and we both fall asleep.
The next morning I wake up to an empty bed. I hear the shower running so I sit up and wipe off my smeared makeup from the night before, and get dressed for the day. I put on my light-wash jean capris, a white tank top, and my black flip flops. My hair is still relatively straight, so I brush it out and left it fall freely. I check my phone and see that it’s almost nine thirty and send Anthony a message telling him and Peter to get ready. The shower turns off and I sit on the bed waiting for Alex to come out.
A few minutes later, he walks out of the bathroom with his shorts on and is drying off his hair with a towel. “Good morning.” He says softly. “How was your sleep?” He sits on the bed next to me and hangs his head.
“Good morning.” I rest my head on his shoulder and sigh. “It was okay. How was yours?” I hold his hand and he squeezes it tightly. He shakes his head and says nothing. “Alex…”
“You have no idea how shitty I feel. How I let that happen. I’m supposed to protect you, love you, and keep you happy. I don’t even remember how it happened, just that when I finally realized what was going on, I felt your anger. I felt your sadness and it hurt so much. I’ll do anything for you to believe me. Use the rune, beat me, yell at me, I don’t care. Just don’t leave. Please.” He refuses to look at me as tears fall from both his eyes and mine. He takes my hand and places it over his chest where I tested him once before.
“Alex, I believe you. I don’t need a rune to help with that. I can tell when you’re lying. You’re my mate. My home. I was more mad in the moment but after Anthony explained what happened, I was just worried about you.” I press into him and caress his cheek. “Look at me, my love.” I pull his chin up and he slowly opens his eyes. I gasp and drop my mouth. His eyes have changed yet again. From his bright blue eyes, to one that matches mine, now he has two, deep blue eyes. It’s as if the sun is setting, and is bringing out the deep blues of the ocean.
“What? What’s wrong?” I cover my mouth as my eyes begin to fill with tears and let out a small laugh. He jumps up and runs to the mirror and gasps. “My eyes…” He comes back over to me and scoops me up into a tight hug. “They’re gone! My vampire genes are gone!” He swings us around the room and we both laugh with extreme happiness.
“I can’t believe it! We did it!” I kiss him and wrap my arms around his neck. He stands me in front of him and holds my face.
“No, you did it. It was your magic that did it. I’m human. Well, a human who’s probably immortal and can kick major ass. And also mated to a Goddess.” I laugh and kiss him again.
“Half, Goddess.”
“Nope, full Goddess to me.” He kisses the top of my head and reaches into his suitcase for a shirt. “Let’s get some food and hit the road. I’m sure the guys are waiting to see what you’ve done to me.” He winks. “Maybe you should give me another bloody nose to freak them out.” He laughs as he sees the shock on my face. “I’m kidding!” He wraps an arm around me and we walk out of the room to get Anthony and Peter. *****

“So it’s really gone?”
“How do you know it worked?”
“Do you still have your powers and stuff?”
“I could give you a punch to find out!?”
“Holy guys! Shut up!” I yell at Anthony and Peter who apparently think it’s okay to power through questions first thing in the morning. “Yes they’re gone, and I just do, and we don’t know yet, and no, you’re not going to punch him. I already did that last night and I’d rather not have to see my mate with a bloody nose again for no reason.” I spill out their wanted answers and shovel a big bite of pancakes into my mouth.
“Sorry Ally.” They say in unison.
“It’s okay guys. I’m guessing because of what happened last night, that my vamp genes have to be gone because people have attempted to roofie me before and it never worked. I guess I gotta be more careful now. I don’t know about my healing, or my speed, or strength or any of that stuff yet. We’ll have to find some time to test things out.” Alex takes a bite of his waffles and waves his fork around as he explains his thoughts.
“What we need to do right now is get back on the road. It’s almost eleven now, and we still have an eight hour drive before we get to New Orleans. I want to try and get there before sundown. The sooner we find Salem, the closer we are to finding the others. I don’t even know if Artemis and Demeter’s kids know that they’re Demigods.” I move my remaining eggs around my plate and set my fork down. “I also want to try and call Lucas. See if my mom is still there and check in on Christian.” I look over at Alex and raise an eyebrow. “Now that you don’t have his genes anymore, what do you want to do?”
“If it’s okay, I’d like to be there when he dies.” Alex’s eyes flash black and he grips his glass of orange juice. “He took so much from so many people, and I want to see the fear in his eyes when he realizes his life is over.” The glass explodes and juice flies everywhere. Anthony and Peter stand up and stare at Alex, and I grab his hand to examine the damage.
“What…? There isn’t… uh, you’re fine?” There isn’t a single shard of glass nor drop of blood on his hand. I flip it over a couple times to make sure, and I hold it up for everyone to see. “You must have some type of power, because you just shattered a glass and nothing happened to you. No blood, nothing. Your eyes also turned black for a second there.” I look at Anthony and he tenses up. I see his hand go into his pocket and before I can do anything, he takes his pocket blade and lunges at Alex.
In the blink of an eye Alex is standing up and holding the blade with his hand an inch away from his chest. Peter and I are staring in shock, and Anthony and Alex begin to laugh. Anthony closes his blade and puts it back in his pocket. “Well, you’ve got speed and invincibility. What else can we test out?” Alex shrugs and laughs again.
“I don’t know, but let’s see if we can freak them out even more next time.” Both boys laugh at Alex’s comment and I look at Peter as he rolls his eyes. He twirls his fingers and the next thing I see is Anthony and Alex soaked in orange juice. This time, it’s Peter and I who are laughing and Anthony and Alex are quiet. “Ha ha, very funny.” They both wipe their face and we all leave the breakfast room with people staring at us. We all laugh on the way back to our rooms to collect our suitcases and get on the road to New Orleans.
Let’s hope this trip goes better than Miami.
