Chapter Twelve - Part One

328 Words
Present After Ada burst through the first door and shut it, she took a few seconds to assess where she was. Her eyes, still accustomed to the dark from when she was outside, took little time to adjust in the dim lighting. She realized that she stood in front of another door.   Behind her through the first closed door, she could hear thudding and clattering of boots on the stairs as the soldiers descended. They were moving quickly once they broke the shovel that she had shoved through the rooftop door. A quick glance around showed her that this little landing was empty and devoid of anything she could use to block the door behind her. She tried the handle of the door in front of her.  Locked. She faced the inner door, got up on her tip toes and with shaky hands she quickly felt around the top of the door frame. Her right hand bumped up something metal, causing it to slide off the small ledge. As it fell past her face to the ground, she saw it was a key. She dived on it with both hands and shoved it into the key hole. The men’s steps in the stairwell were getting louder. Her heart started to pound again. THUMP THUMP  She pushed on the door handle once again and fell past the threshold. She stumbled into a dark room. She dove to the side out of the way of the door. In a few seconds, she took in that she was in the back of a clothes shop. Circular racks dotted all over the main floor. She continued veering to the side and decided to hide behind the solid counter along the side of the shop. She fell to her hands and knees, just as she heard a loud BANG! echo through the quiet dark room. Her pursuers had burst through the door she just stumbled through herself. They were here. And she was exposed.
