Maya Edwin was one to never lose her cool or composure no matter what the situation was, but as she stood in front of her boss, staring at the printed sack letter in her hands, she couldn't stop her legs and hands from trembling. Her mouth opened in a bid to say something but the words would not come out. All she got was that tearing ache in her chest.
The manager of Tyson Enterprises where Maya worked, at least before now, was seated in his swivel chair on the other side of the table. His fingers were interlocked in front of him and his face set in a stern frown. He watched Maya's reaction with a deadpan expression, waiting for her to say something. When she didn't, he spoke up,
“ Ms Edwin, I believe you understand the details of the letter in your hand very clearly”
Maya's mind was drawn back from the dark empty world she had found herself in. She looked at the paper once more and a heavy sigh left her lips.
“ Sir, I… “ her lips quivered and the words filtered through.
" I don't understand, I… " Still, she couldn't form the words properly.
The Manager's expression turned even more sour.
“ I don't believe you would have gone dumb overnight, Ms Edwin. The letter was properly drafted and the details made very clear, this is not something that requires any further clarification” he spat arrogantly.
Maya's legs trembled even more. It was like they couldn't hold her anymore and she was going to crumble to the ground anytime soon. If only the ground would open and swallow her…
“ Fine! Let me break it down in the simplest manner I can" the manager began speaking again.
He unleaned from the chair and rested his elbows on the wooden table standing between him and Maya.
“ You have been relieved from your duties as of this moment. You no longer work for Tyson Enterprises or any of our branches, you are expected to return all of the company's properties in your custody and evacuate the building within an hour of receiving the letter “ Mr James said.
He raised his wrist up to his eye level, looking at his wrist watch and back at Maya.
" You have spent 20 minutes of that time already" he added.
Maya's heart began racing like an out-of-control jackhammer and a surge of adrenaline pulsed through her vein. She suddenly felt angry and an inner voice in her mind told her that she had every reason to be angry.
Without thinking, Maya opened her mouth and the words began pouring,
“ Mr James, I don't understand what is going on. You can't just shove a sack letter in my face without any reason. I am your most reliable worker, I show up on time every single day, I deliver all of my jobs without delay and I am always at your beck and call whenever you need me. And all of a sudden, I come to work on a Monday morning and you're telling me I'm fired, I deserve a reason at least. Why? What is it I've done wrong that can't be fixed?”
Mr James' expression hardened and his face contorted into an angry frown.
“ Have you forgotten who the boss here is? How dare you question me?" He questioned, his tone a reflection of his rage.
Maya was unshaken. She stared head-on at him and said,
“ I have every right to question you. I need to know why you're relieving me of my duties. The letter doesn't say why, I could have this company sued for this”
She instantly regretted the last statement as Mr James banged the table loudly, shooting to his feet and raising an accusing finger at her.
" How dare you talk about suing this company? Such presumptuousness even after lying to us for over two years, I could have you arrested and you will rot in jail for the rest of your miserable life” he snapped at her.
Maya instantly recoiled, all of her confidence and anger flying out of the window like the wind.
Mr James continued,
“ I knew there was something wrong about you from the moment I saw you. You were lying to us the entire time”
Maya swallowed, the pounding of her chest could be heard from across the room. Mr James heaved in satisfaction on seeing her reaction.
" Yes! The truth is out. Everyone here knows about your marital status now and we cannot keep you any longer”
Regret flooded through her veins and she immediately resorted to the initial action she would have taken- begging.
" Sir, I can explain… "
Mr James’expression made her swallow the words back.
“ You lied that you are not married when you actually are, what explanation can you give for that act of dubiousness? Who knows what else you've lied about. I don't want to hear your useless explanations, you are fired and that's final. Leave now!" He thundered.
Maya flinched, the anger in his tone making goose bumps crawl on her skin.
“ Sir, please… “
" Ms Maya Edwin, maintain the last bit of dignity you have left and just leave right now. As you know, the walls of my office are not soundproof, everyone can hear what is going on in here so I'd advise you to accept this and walk out just the way you came in" Mr James said.
Maya bit her lips as drops of tears fell from her eyes.
" I have nowhere else to go. This is my only job, my only means of earning a living, please… please don't do this to me, sir” she mumbled, her voice breaking.
If he felt even an iota of sympathy, he did not show it. He raised his wristwatch to his eyes once again and sneered at her.
“ 30 seconds more and I'm calling the security"
Maya knew that Mr James never liked her, she had refused all of his advances and as such, had ended up in his bad books. This was his opportunity to pay back and she knew he would use it to the fullest so with her jelly legs, she turned and left the room.
Just as he had said, every staff member had heard the conversation between them. She could tell because all eyes were on her, they were those who felt sympathy for her and those who were pleased she would finally be gotten rid of but she looked ahead and ignored all of them, not even the ones who used to be her friends. It felt like she was going to die from their piercing stares but she managed to walk out of the building, her ego badly injured.
Maya was too weak to walk back home so with her last cash, she hailed a cab home. As she sat in the car, the only thought on her mind was how she was going to survive from here. It was only the beginning of the month and she had spent her last salary on medical bills. Lately, she had been feeling overly weak. On the day she got paid, she decided to visit a hospital. When she found out that she was two months pregnant, Maya didn't know how to feel. It didn't just end there, according to the doctor, she was very sick and needed to be treated or else she would lose the baby and gradually lose herself too. It was a very difficult decision to make and at the end of the day, Maya went home with not even a single dime left from her salary.
Her husband, Chris, had blown up. In his words, she shouldn't have made such a decision without consulting him, even though she was at the point of death. Maya did not think about it, for the sake of her peace of mind. Thinking about Chris now, he would be extremely mad when he found out she had lost her job after squandering her entire salary.
The taxi arrived at Maya's apartment and she crawled out with the last bit of strength she had after paying. She pulled herself through the doors, climbing the stairs with nothing more but just resolution. Her bones were weak and her body was screaming at her but she was determined to get to the top floor and take a much needed rest.
Finally, her apartment door appeared before her. With a weak sigh, she reached out to unlock the door with the keys in her hand but the door made way as soon as she touched it. Maya didn't think about it, Chris had probably carelessly left the door open again.
She walked in, dragging her feet to the first place on her mind. As she approached the only room in the apartment, loud moans filtered through her ears.
Maya groaned tiredly. Was Chris watching p*********y again?
As she pushed the door open, her legs went weak and her breath seized.
“ Chris!" She called out, her lips quavering.
