DAISY'S POV
After school, I didn't have the chance to speak with Ethan for long as he seemed to be in a hurry.
He walked over to my desk and took my phone from my hand. I watched as he punched in some numbers on the keypad before handing it back to me.
"You might want to text me later," He said before leaving.
I turned and picked my bag to leave but just then, I noticed Kyle's eyes were fixed on me. He was scraping a pen knife against his table and knowing him well, I quickly made my way out of the class.
The walk home was a short one, and in a matter of minutes, I was at the door to the Houston's mansion. I did a quick sign of the cross and mumbled a prayer before pushing the door open, and my eyes met with Bryan's first.
He grinned as soon as our eyes met and I turned away before things could get really awkward.
"Daisy," He mumbled. "Don't just walk out on me like that."
I remained rooted to the spot as he rose up from the chair and started walking towards me. He stopped right in front of me, and carefully parted my locks so he could see my face better.
"Happy birthday, Daisy," Bryan said, a soft smile forming across his face.
I managed to mutter a "Thank you" before spinning around, but unluckily for me, Zac's huge frame had already blocked the way. I shuddered in fear as he stared me down with those unforgiving sea green eyes and when I thought he was going to say something mean, he smiled.
"Happy birthday, Daisy," He said. "You're eighteen now?"
I nodded slowly and he continued.
"So that means you would find your mate anytime soon."
The truth was that I was already beginning to get worried about finding my mate. I had expected to pick his scent, and even shift into my wolf as soon as I woke up, but that was not the case. Now, I didn't even know what to think anymore.
"I don't know," I replied finally. "I should find him soon."
"He'll definitely be handsome," Bryan teased. "You're pretty and you deserve nothing less."
I blushed. "Thank you."
"So how would you like him to look?" Bryan ranted on. "Tall? Short? Muscular, sure, with rock hard abs, and a well chiseled jaw, and - "
"I think you should allow her rest," Zac grunted. "She just got back from school and she still has a lot of chores to do."
"Yes! I still have a lot of chores to do because you're so lazy and you never move a bone!" I screamed in my head.
"Yeah, whatever," Bryan sighed and turned his attention back to the TV.
I was about to head upstairs to my room when the front door creaked open. I knew who it was, and I knew I should have just made my way out of the living room immediately, but for some reason, my legs remained rooted to the spot. I couldn't move an inch.
The sound of Kyle's footsteps steadily getting closer haunted my ears, and I closed my eyes, expecting the worst. The next minute, I felt his warm breath against my neck and I knew he was standing right behind me.
"You embarrassed me in front of the whole class, Brownielocks," Kyle breathed down my neck. "You and your - "
He paused for a while, as if trying to figure out the best word to use.
" - handsome but dumb boyfriend!" He said finally.
"Boyfriend?" I heard Bryan ask.
My eyes went open at that moment and I spun around to meet Kyle's gaze.
"I'm sorry," I muttered. "If you're still mad about your laptop, I'll work extra hard to fix it before I leave, I promise, but please - "
"Hold on," Kyle cut in. "What did you just say?"
"I - I - I'll work extra hard to fix your laptop," I stammered.
"The last part, dumb b***h!" He growled.
I stared at him, confused. "Before I leave?"
"Yes, that," He nodded. "What do you mean?"
I swallowed hard, as I racked my brain for the best possible way I was going to break the news to the over - pampered brat that I was expecting to find my mate anytime soon and leave the Houston mansion for good.
"Well," I started. "I turned eighteen today and I should be finding my mate anytime soon. Then, I'd have to move out because...you know."
I watched as he bit his lips in anger, and he inched closer to me.
"And who told you that the moon goddess has a match for an ugly, overweight and acne infested face Omega like you?" He asked.
I tried to speak but the words hooked in my throat. My eyes were burning with hot tears already and I struggled to keep them in. I had promised myself years ago that I was never going to allow any of the triplets break me ever again. It was hard to keep to that, however with the sharp tongued brat, Kyle, berating me now.
"Don't be mean, Kyle," Bryan muttered. "Today is her special day."
"There's nothing special about that fat thing!" Kyle retorted, and turning his attention to me, he added:
"You were made for us, not as our mate of course. The moon goddess would never be silly as to cursing the heirs to the throne with a worthless Omega like you! I mean, you were made to work for us, as our slave. You have no other purpose, and the earlier you kill the thought of finding a mate, the better for you."
The tears that I had been trying so much to hold back were now flowing freely from my eyes.
"That's not true!" I argued, my voice shaky from sobbing. "Everyone has a mate and I'm sure I have one too."
"Well, everyone except you," Kyle chuckled like he had cracked a funny joke. "You're eighteen already, aren't you? The closest thing you can get to a mate is that foul mouthed Ethan who wants to get in your pants - which is disgusting."
That was definitely it.
Fueled by my anger, I slapped Kyle hard across the cheek and he staggered back.
"Don't you dare speak of Ethan like that!" I snapped.
It was when Kyle remained silent, with his left hand on his cheek, that I realized what I had done. I actually slapped him! Now, I was dead meat.
Kyle rushed at me, intent on finishing me for good but Zac held him back.
"That's enough," Zac grunted. "You can kill her tomorrow if you like. Today is her birthday and you can't lay a finger on her."
Kyle stared at his elder brother for a few seconds, as if he was trying to weigh his options and finally, he smiled.
"True," Kyle said. He cupped my cheeks gently and looked me dead in the eyes.
"I would kill you tomorrow, Brownielocks."
He turned on his heels without another word and marched towards his room. A few seconds later, I heard the sound of his room door bang shut and I shuddered in fear. Only the thought of what Kyle could do to me was enough to unsettle me for the rest of the day.
"He's all talk," Bryan mumbled, patting me gently across my back. "He won't touch you, don't worry."
I stared up at him, and as much as I wanted to take comfort in his words, I knew they were just words. Bryan was the last of the triplets, and if Kyle actually wanted to go violent on me, there was little he could do to help.
I took the stairs up to my room and once I was in, I shut the door and fell face first on the bed. I knew that locking the door was not going to keep Kyle away from my room, but at least, it helped me feel a bit protected, for now.
I rolled around in my bed for the next hour while thinking about the best possible way to save myself from Kyle's wrath, and just then, a brilliant idea formed in my head.
Ethan!
He was bold, strong and the teachers respected him. Certainly, he could protect me from Kyle.
I picked my phone and dialed his line. It rang for a while, but there was no answer. I dialed a few more times and when no answer came, I resigned to my fate. I was as good as dead the next morning, and there was nothing I could do about it.
I curled up beneath the sheets, and allowed myself drift off to sleep.
