The rain was pouring down hard as the big black truck sped away from the secret clinic. Alexander drove with one hand tight on the wheel. In the back seat, Thomas sat with his hands tied behind his back with thick plastic zip-ties. Clara sat in the front seat, looking at Thomas in the rear-view mirror. He was looking out the window, his face pale but his eyes moving fast. He was thinking. "The warehouse," Thomas said, his voice shaking a little. "He is keeping her at the old shipping docks. Pier Four. It is empty and dark. Julian has four guards there." Alexander did not say anything. He just pressed his foot harder on the gas. But Clara frowned. She looked down at her lap, thinking about her father. Before her father went to prison, he used to work on books for the Vance family's ship
