Landon didn't want to be the next Alpha. That was his father's position. And he definitely didn't want to find a mate and end up paranoid like his dad because something happened to her. But going to school off the pack grounds to a human college was never intended to end up like this. Landon found himself having to answer to a challenge made to his title and to prevent bloodshed on human territory, he offered a counter challenge for the right to be alpha to the Black Forest and to take his fated mated as Luna. He figured he could keep the pack and pass it to his younger brother instead and he was planning on rejecting his mate when they met anyway. It sounded like a good enough plan until he met her. Will Landon take his place as alpha and open his heart to his fated luna or will he let the brokenness of the past thwart his fate altogether?

The Challenge
-- Landon "I, Todd Scanlan, son of Alpha Morris Scanlan of the former Blue Woods pack, challenge you, Landon Achilles, heir to the Black Forest pack, for the Alpha title." UGH. Was he freaking kidding me?! This i***t must be suicidal. I could easily break his neck and this be over with, that wasn't my concern. But we were in the middle of the practice field at school, a human school. If we started fighting to the death, the humans could possibly die in the process if they tried to stop either of our wolves from fighting. Even if no one got hurt, the aftermath of this fight was bound to have either one of us put through the human legal system. Todd's pack had been dismantled years ago, so he clearly had nothing to lose as a rogue, but I was still in line to be alpha of Black Forest. I wasn't excited about taking my position, which is part of why I convinced my dad to let me go to a human college, but I wasn't about to let some rogue make me cower into giving it to him and having my pack dismantled in the process. "Dude! Are you freaking kidding me?! You know we can't do this here." I answered through gritted teeth. Todd's slick smile told me he knew exactly what he'd done and that I was just as bound by wolf law as he was. He'd given an official challenge loud enough for me to hear. Even if no one else heard but the two of us, my wolf Bain would be forced to comply just as his wolf would be. If I did not, I would automatically forfeit the title anyway. This was not going to be pretty. A challenge for the alpha title was to the death. Ugh, think Landon! He's clearly an i***t. Just let me snap his neck quickly. No Bain. We can't do that here. Help me figure out how to honor the challenge and get us out of sight. We have two options. Let me snap his neck or ... let me snap his neck. Now who's being the i***t? Are you not paying attention. We. Cannot. Kill. Him. Here. There are way too many human witnesses. I told you we shouldn't have come to a human school. They don't have wolf law. It sucks here. And they smell weird. Again, not helping. Okay. We can't leave this area since the challenge was called here. I know this will hurt you, but I'm going to try and run. If I can get away, then we'll just go somewhere and figure it out. If I can't, I'm going to have to forfeit. I can't risk going to human jail. It'll put the entire pack at risk. Having this i***t be the next Alpha will put the pack at risk. Don't do ... Before Bain could finish, I shut him out and mentally apologized for the pain I knew he was about to feel. I could just see the challenge barrier around Todd and I that I knew would be invisible to everyone else. Before I could complete my next thought, Todd came crashing into me, knocking me to the ground. At this very moment, I was thanking the moon goddess above, that guys fighting it out in the middle of football practice wasn't an unusual thing for my team. No one flinched, especially knowing the tension that always seemed to exist between Todd and me. "Just forfeit," Todd coaxed while pinning me to the ground, "make this easier on both of us. I really don't want to have to kill you." "You have no idea what you're doing. You're clearly not prepared to be a leader. No real leader would attack without a reason." I pushed back. I used a bit of Bain's strength to push Todd off of me, tossing him a few feet away. That definitely wasn’t normal for a locker room fight, not for humans. We were definitely starting to get looks at this point. "No reason? No reason?! Are you serious pretty boy? I guess daddy doesn't tell you everything does he?" Todd charged towards me again. I was ready this time to meet his force, but as we collided into one another, I saw something in his eyes I hadn't expected. Hurt. The hurt in his eyes was so strong I could begin to smell it on him like physical pain. "My family is constantly on the run. I lost my mother, my home, everything. And it's your old man's doing. My dad might be too weak to take back what was his, but I'm not." That was it. Bain was not going to let him lie on my father, our Alpha like that. Todd's father was a ruthless leader and brought the war on himself when he tried to challenge the Elder Council using dark magic. Yes, my father had been part of the team of alphas to help fight against him and dismantle his pack, but it was all done as it should be according to wolf law. "My mother died in that fight too you prick. And your father was the one who disobeyed the law." I wasn't sure who could hear us at this point, but I was trying to be careful with my response to not give away that we weren't humans. As I thought about what I'd just said, I remembered something in wolf law. It was risky, but it was an out that could buy me some time. "Rescind the challenge. Now." I wasn't the official Alpha yet, but I tried to make that last statement using the lpha authority I did have just by blood. I could feel it working as Todd was forced to bare his neck to me while he was still trying to force me down. Bain knew we could overpower Todd, but I was trying to give him a way out and help us keep our world secret all at the same time. He was still trying to push against my authority and get the upper hand, but I got lower and dug in as I pushed against him. Todd was holding his ground but still getting pushed closer and closer to that invisible barrier around us that I knew only the two of us in the challenge could see. If he wasn't going to rescind verbally, maybe I could make him make the step outside the circle on his own and give up that way. Stepping outside the challenge barrier would be an official forfeit by wolf law. Todd's wolf must have felt the barrier getting closer as he squatted a little lower, placed his hands behind my forward leg and jerked upward. This was the second time he'd knocked me down. He was really a pain in the neck. Well, on to what I was trying to not have to resort to. I knew Bain was probably going to block me for ages for this. "I, Landon Achilles, give a counter challenge to you, Todd Scanlan, son of Alpha Morris Scanlan of the former Blue Woods pack, for my title as future alpha to the Black Forest pack and any right I have to my true mate and Luna. Both rights are effective immediately upon the conclusion of the new challenge to be issued 30 days from today on the ceremonial grounds within the Black Forest pack." As I heard Bain groaning in my head, I could feel the magic of the wolf law lifting from the challenge that day as I saw the gleam in Todd's eye. His initial challenge would have only made him alpha once my father decided to pass it down, giving him time to find a replacement. I'd just made his takeover an immediate result of a challenge win. And I'd given him my destined mate at the same time to rule with him as luna. With the luna that was originally chosen to be by my side ruling the Black Forest, he would be stronger than he ever would have been with his own mate, chosen or destined. It would be her destiny to rule Black Forest, so her strength would be unrivaled as luna. "So we're done here then?" I asked, just in time for my coach to yell at us both. "That's enough kissing girls. Hit the showers will ya?" "Yea, we're done here pretty boy," Todd smirked at me as he turned to Coach Neville, "We're going, coach. Achilles just doesn't know how to keep his hands off me." Todd jogged backward still glaring at me with an accomplished smile. When he suddenly froze. That was weird. As I got up to walk towards the showers myself, I started to itch all over. Then a curious smell hit me. When I turned my head in the direction of the new and inviting smell, I realized this must be what froze Todd as I did the exact same. While we were wrestling, the cheerleaders must have made their way towards the field. And right in the back was one I'd never seen. I immediately wondered if her kisses would taste like the same chocolate of her skin and how it would almost glow next to my olive complexion. I would definitely have to bend to find out because she had to be at least a foot shorter than my 6'5 frame. Her big almond eyes looked curiously around the stadium while holding silent confidence that she herself may have been unaware of. He'd been silently brooding in my head since the challenge I issued, but now Bain spoke loudly in my head with equal parts excitement in pain. MATE.
