The perfume industry knows my work by one letter: S. At Sterling Parfums, no one knows that its anonymous perfumer is also CEO Arthur Sterling's wife. Arthur prefers it that way. For three years, I handed him the formulas that built his company. I kept telling myself our family made the bargain worthwhile. Then his new assistant, Chloe, started taking credit for my work. Arthur let her. He also gave her the time he no longer had for us. Tonight, he skips our hearing-impaired son's fifth birthday to celebrate another one of my formulas with her. Before he costs Leo and me anything else, I have a choice to make.

Chapter 1 The Melted Cake
The chocolate race car on Leo’s fifth birthday cake was melting. One wheel had sunk into the white frosting. The roof sagged, and chocolate icing crept over the edge of the plate toward the tablecloth. Arthur had promised to be home before we cut it. I read the email on my phone again. [Dear Ms. Langley, We are pleased to confirm your consultation with Dr. Alaine Bernard, Director of Pediatric Audiology, Hôpital Necker. Paris awaits you and your son.] Paris. Dr. Bernard was Leo’s best chance. Leo sat on the floor with his back straight, watching the front door. Every time headlights crossed the window, he leaned forward and waited for the sound of Arthur’s key in the lock. Arthur wasn’t hard to find. Every major news channel was showing the launch party for his newest fragrance. On the television across the room, my husband stood with one arm around his assistant, Chloe. She leaned against him for the cameras. “Elysian Bloom is a triumph,” a reporter gushed. “Ms. Vance, you’ve truly captured a new era for Sterling Parfums.” Chloe had chosen the ribbon on the bottle. That was the full extent of her work. She smiled at the reporter. “I just follow my intuition. And of course, Arthur’s brilliant guidance.” *My* formula. *My* work. *My* intuition. I called him. He answered after two rings. “This had better be important, Serena.” “It is. It’s Leo’s birthday. He’s been waiting for you.” He sighed. “I’m in the middle of the biggest launch of my career. We’ll celebrate another time. Buy him a new toy. He’ll be fine.” “He doesn’t want a toy, Arthur. He wants his father.” “Don’t you dare use his condition to guilt me. This is a place of business. I can’t be seen running home for a kid’s party.” My fingers locked around the edge of the table. He wasn’t done. “Frankly, if it weren’t for your accidental pregnancy, I never would have been forced into this damn marriage in the first place.” He hung up. Leo had heard him. Before the call ended, he turned away from the door. He didn’t cry or make a sound. He only stared at the floor between us. He was only five, but he had understood every word. He reached behind his ear and unhooked the processor of his cochlear implant. After looking at the small beige device in his palm, he set it carefully on the polished floor. Now he wouldn’t have to listen for his father’s car. He came to me and tugged on my sleeve. “I don’t want to wait anymore, Mommy.” I picked him up. He pressed his face into my shoulder, leaving the cake untouched. I had sat through three years of Arthur’s excuses. I wouldn’t ask Leo to sit through one more. “Okay, baby. We won’t wait anymore.” Later that night, I tucked Leo into bed and put his processor on the nightstand. Then I went into my study and locked the door. The key scraped in the lock. In the quiet house, the sound carried. From a locked drawer, I pulled out a thick binder labeled “LABORATORY ASSET & PROCEDURE HANDOVER.” Between the equipment manuals and safety protocols sat two documents I had prepared weeks earlier and kept out of Arthur’s sight. The first was a divorce agreement, citing irreconcilable differences. The second legally revoked every intellectual property license covering the core formulas supplied to Sterling Parfums by the anonymous master perfumer known only as S. They were my formulas, even if his name was on the building. Tomorrow, I would put a routine handover checklist in front of Arthur. He rarely read anything I put in front of him, especially when Chloe wanted his attention. If he signed this one, the license would end immediately. Every formula carrying his company would come back to me.
