Chapter 4

1031 Words
The dark sky was overcast with clouds and chilly winds whipped through the trees, creaking and groaning like an old rocking chair. The temperature went down to minus zero degrees and Cassie knew there was going to be a heavy downpour. This made her squeeze her blankets around her torso tighter in anticipation of the much awaited rain. She was a bit surprised when she saw Brianna on her knees, folding her blankets with her eyebrows narrowed in utmost focus. “What are you doing?” Cassie asked hoarsely. She blinked her eyes, struggling to keep them open. Brianna looked up wearily “Getting ready for the big night,” Cassie’s eyes snapped open and she quickly sat up “No. you aren’t going anywhere. Besides, it is about to rain...,” She gestured to the window which showed the dark clouds. There was no one who would go outside… Brianna hissed in irritation. “Don’t you think I know that? I have to survive and you know that. This is the night when men would like to spend more in exchange for cuddles. So, I have to go,” She finished and hastily draped the rain coat over her shoulders. “You might have escaped this type of life but, some of us have to survive and you’d agree with me that there isn’t much in the market these days.” Cassie pursed her lips as she watched Brianna let loose her hair and it fell down like waves on the sea. Cassie has always admired Brianna’s hair and she wouldn’t admit it to her narcissist of a friend that she loved her hair texture. ”Look Brianna; I am not trying to stop you. Like you said, heavy downpour, more money but those men will get extra reckless tonight and I am just looking out for you. That’s all.” “Yeah... Look out for yourself, big baby. You’ve got to rise up by morning for work.” She said, fastening her belt-hook. “I will see you later and then you’d have to tell me about your first day at work. The full details” She warned playfully and saw herself out. As soon as Cassie heard the door close, she wrapped herself up like a burrito in her blanket and hoped that the morning would come faster. She was really eager to start her job and start life afresh. She chose not to say anything during her friend’s outburst of emotions because Brianna has always been like that and due to Cassie’s love for her, she rather let her be. Brianna disliked been offered an advice but she enjoys giving an unsolicited advice all the time to her. Glancing at the clock beside her, she noticed it was well past 7 p.m and she could hear the splattering of rain on her roof. Feeling a little cold, she got up from her bed in order to turn up the heater. There was a knock on her door. Cassie walked towards her door, wondering if she had an appointment with anybody but no one came up in her mind. The door groaned a little as she opened it. To her surprise it was Jason. He was the last person Cassie wanted to see and she wasn’t pleased to see him at her doorstep. “Jason, what are you doing here?” His teeth clattered a little as he spoke. “Hello Cassie, are you going to leave me out here? It is very cold,” Cassie didn’t care because she frowned deeper. “I asked you a question. What are you doing here?” “I came to see you. Can’t I come to visit my girlfriend?” He tried to push past her into the apartment but Cassie wouldn’t bulge. Jason looked frustrated as he frantically rubbed his hands together to produce heat. “Damn it Cassie, I am freezing out here!” Cassie bit her inner cheeks in bemusement. “Oh no Jason, you don’t get to dump me and then show up here like I am some property to be claimed. Get out and don’t show your face back at my apartment next time.” With that she banged the door to his face. Cassie was quite aware that Jason wouldn’t let her go if he was trying to come back into her life. She covered her ears with her palms as she tried not to listen to Jason calls and yelling. What does he want? Cassie asked herself bitterly. She couldn’t bear it any longer when she heard a thunder strike and without wasting much time she flung the door open and ushered the shivering Jason inside. She felt pity and anger all at once and to top it all, she couldn’t control it. Cassie didn’t know the right emotion to show at him and so she settled for a shaky smile to hide how she truly felt inside. “Thank you” Jason muttered as sat down and basked in the warmth of her apartment. Cassie mumbled something unintelligent as she went into the kitchen to make him a cup of coffee. She watched closely as he looked around her apartment with a smirk plastered on his face. “Your apartment looks the same. It smells of you.” Cassie scoffed at his statement as she gazed at the kettle with profound concentration. She didn’t dare to look at his face. The same face that she fell in love with a year ago. Cassie was amazed at how much time had passed since she last saw him. He was handsome, kind, gentle and didn’t find the fault in anything she did and this made her so blind in love that she didn’t see the true person he was. It was like a bad dream to her when he found out the secret she had been hiding all along. She was a stripper and Jason felt strippers were people who gave their body to men for money. He saw them as sluts and thought Cassie wasn’t any less different. He couldn’t trust her words and ended their relationship. Cassie was rather disappointed in him.
