CHAPTER ONE: BETRAYAL
The night Zara caught her boyfriend cheating was the same night she found out she was pregnant.
The laughter was the first thing Zara noticed.
Soft. Intimate. Wrong.
It slipped through the slightly open door like a cruel whisper, wrapping around her chest and squeezing tight. Her fingers trembled as she stood frozen in the hallway, her heart pounding so loudly she was sure whoever was inside could hear it.
She wasn’t supposed to be here this early.
That was the plan.
A surprise.
Zara swallowed hard, forcing a smile onto her lips as she reached for the door. *Maybe I’m overthinking… maybe it’s nothing…*
But deep down, something already knew.
Her hand pushed the door open.
And her world shattered.
There, on the bed she had helped him pay for… was Daniel.
Not alone.
A woman lay beneath him, laughing softly as her fingers traced his chest like she belonged there. Like she had always belonged there.
Zara’s breath caught in her throat.
“Daniel…?”
The sound of her voice was small. Fragile. Unfamiliar.
Everything stopped.
Daniel turned, his expression shifting from surprise… to irritation.
Not guilt.
Never guilt.
“Oh,” he said flatly, sitting up like she was nothing more than an inconvenience. “You’re back.”
Back?
Zara’s legs felt weak, but she forced herself to stand tall, even as her heart cracked open inside her chest.
“What is this…?” she whispered, her eyes darting between him and the woman who now looked at her with open amusement.
The woman smirked, slowly sitting up and wrapping the bedsheet around her body like a queen dressing for her throne.
“You didn’t tell me she’d come home early,” she said lazily, glancing at Daniel.
Daniel sighed, running a hand through his hair like this was all too stressful for him.
“I didn’t think it mattered.”
Zara flinched.
Didn’t… matter?
“I’m your girlfriend!” she cried, her voice breaking despite her effort to stay strong. “We’ve been together for three years, Daniel!”
“And?” he replied coldly.
That single word hit harder than a slap.
“And…?” Zara repeated, disbelief flooding her voice. “What do you mean *and*?”
The woman chuckled, clearly entertained now.
“Wow,” she said, shaking her head. “You really didn’t tell her anything, did you?”
Zara turned to her, confusion mixing with fear. “Tell me what?”
The woman stepped forward, her gaze sharp and cruel.
“My name is Vanessa Blake,” she said smoothly. “And Daniel is engaged to me.”
Silence.
Heavy. Suffocating. Deadly.
Zara blinked.
Once.
Twice.
Her brain refused to process the words.
“Engaged…?” she whispered.
Daniel didn’t deny it.
Didn’t even try.
Instead, he looked at her with something worse than hatred.
Indifference.
“You should have known this wasn’t going anywhere,” he said. “I mean… look at you, Zara. What exactly do you have to offer me?”
Each word was a knife.
“I supported you!” she snapped, tears spilling down her cheeks now. “I paid half your rent! I stood by you when you had nothing!”
“And now I have everything,” he replied smoothly. “Including her.”
Vanessa smiled proudly, slipping her arm through his.
Zara felt like she couldn’t breathe.
Three years.
Three years of love, sacrifice, loyalty…
Reduced to nothing.
“You used me…” she whispered.
Daniel shrugged. “Don’t be dramatic. You knew your place.”
Her place.
Something inside Zara broke completely.
Before she could stop herself, her hand moved—
*SLAP!*
The sound echoed across the room.
Vanessa gasped.
Daniel’s head snapped to the side, shock flashing across his face before it quickly turned into anger.
“You dare hit me?” he growled.
Zara’s chest heaved as she stared at him, her entire body shaking.
“I loved you,” she said, her voice trembling but firm. “And you destroyed me.”
For a moment, something flickered in his eyes.
But it disappeared just as quickly.
“Get out,” he said coldly.
The words hit like ice water.
Zara froze.
“I said get out,” he repeated. “Or I’ll have security throw you out.”
Security.
From the house she helped build.
A broken laugh escaped her lips as tears continued to fall.
“Don’t worry,” she said softly. “I’m leaving.”
She turned, walking toward the door on unsteady legs.
But just before she stepped out, she paused.
Her hand rested on her stomach unconsciously.
A strange feeling had been growing inside her for days now…
Something she hadn’t fully understood.
Until now.
Her heart clenched painfully.
*What have I done…?*
Without another word, Zara walked out.
This time, for good.
And she didn’t know it yet…
But the life she was carrying inside her was the beginning of everything.
Or the end of him.
