As Emily walked home, her mind jonesing about what Hawk said, she noticed the rain had finally stopped falling. She decided to walk the rest of the way, enjoying the cool, crisp air and the sound of water dripping from the rooftops. She knew her mom would be angry with her for sneaking out, but Emily was prepared. She had rehearsed her apology and was ready to face the consequences. As she turned the corner onto her street, Emily could see her mom waiting at the window, a look of worry and relief on her face. Emily took a deep breath and walked up the path. "Emily, where have you been?" her mom asked, her voice firm and scolding. Emily took a deep breath and launched into her apology, hoping to appease her mom's anger. "I'm sorry, mom. I know I shouldn't have snuck out, but I just had to go. I promise it won't happen again." But her mom wasn't having it. "You're grounded, young lady! You know you're not allowed to go out without permission, especiallydoing the raining season, i was trying to stop you but you are just to stubborn to heed! What if something had happened to you?" Emily felt a surge of defensiveness, but she knew better than to argue. She hung her head, taking the scolding in silence, she knew her mom was worried, but she also felt a sting from the scolding. She knew she had made a mistake, but she couldn't help feeling drawn to the military and the sense of purpose it offered. As she went to her room, feeling the weight of her mom's disapproval, Emily couldn't shake off the feeling that she was being pulled in two different directions. Her mom wanted her to stay safe and secure, but her heart was telling her to take a chance and follow her dreams. She locked herself inside her room, feeling a mix of emotions, guilt, frustration, and determination. She fell asleep immediately, exhausted from the events. The next morning, her alarm blared to life, jolting her awake. She groggily checked the time and was shocked to see it was already past 6 am. She quickly sprang into action, knowing she had to get ready for school. She took a quick bath, slipped into her school uniform, and began to prepare for the day. As she brushed her hair and applied a light touch of makeup, she felt a sense of normalcy wash over her. She looked neat and beautiful, as always, but her mind was still racing with thoughts of Hawk and the military. As she headed downstairs, her mom was already in the kitchen, making breakfast. They exchanged a brief, tense glared, still feeling the effects of the previous day's argument. "Be good today, Emily," her mom said, as she handed her a bagel and a glass of juice. Emily nodded, feeling a pang of guilt. "I will, mom. I promise." With that, she headed out the door, ready to face another day at school, but her mind was already elsewhere, thinking about the possibilities of joining the military. As she ran inside the car, the driver greeted her with a warm smile. "Good morning, Miss Emily. How are you today?" Emily barely responded with a nod, her mind still preoccupied with thoughts of Hawk. She couldn't believe how much he had affected her in such a short time. The driver, sensing her distraction, kept quiet, allowing Emily to lost in her thoughts. As they arrived at school, Emily was startled back to reality. She quickly got out of the car, her eyes scanning the bustling school grounds. She felt a sense of unease, knowing she had to face another day of classes and social interactions, all while trying to keep her mind off Hawk. "Emily!" She suddenly heard her friend's voice from the back of the hallway and she turned around to see Cassie waving enthusiastically. "Cassie!" she called happily, relieved to have a distraction from her thoughts. Cassie rushed up to her, "Hey, girl! How was your weekend?" Emily's face lit up as she launched into a detailed account of seeing Hawk and how handsome he was. "Oh my gosh, Cassie, Hawk is so tall and muscular, with piercing blue eyes and a strong jawline. And his voice, oh his voice is so deep and commanding! It sent shivers down my spine just listening to him talk." Cassie's eyes widened in excitement, "Wow, Em, you're making me blush over here! I can't believe I missed it. I've been kicking myself all weekend for not going to the meeting with you." Emily laughed, "It's okay, Cassie. You'll meet him next time, I'm sure. And trust me, you'll be just as swoony as I was." Cassie giggled, "I'm holding you to that, Em!" As they walked into their first class together, Emily felt pleased for the distraction from her thoughts. But as they took their seats, Emily's mind began to wander again, wondering what Hawk was doing at that moment, and whether she would see him again soon. Cassie noticed her friend's far-off expression and nudged her playfully, "Hey, Em, earth to Emily! You're still thinking about Hawk, aren't you?" "Maybe a little..." Emily blushed "I knew it! You're totally smitten!" Cassie grinned. Emily rolled her eyes, but couldn't help smiling at her friend's teasing.
