A GIRL FROM MEIREAN HILLS
Long before the spotlight, glamorous red carpet, flashing cameras, and becoming a star, there was a quiet town among the soaring hills of the western countryside. The place is called Meirean Hills. Every morning thick white fog covered the rocky hills until the first rays of sunlight slowly cleared it. The marketplace came alive with the cheerful voices of traders arranging baskets of fresh fruits and vegetables; a lot of people were buying and selling. Children raced along the dusty roads in neatly ironed uniforms while motorcycles made annoying sounds through the narrow streets. It was a peaceful town where everyone knew one another, where neighbors celebrated and mourned together. Life was simple; dreams were not. ‎ In a modest cream-colored bungalow with a rusted zinc roof lived a twelve-year-old girl named Tiana Adebayo. Her family was like many others in Meirean Hills: simple, hardworking, and very content with what they had. Her father, Samuel, spent his days repairing furniture at a roadside workshop near the market. Her mother, Grace, earned a living by selling homemade snacks and preparing meals for workers in town. They were far from wealthy but had enough to survive. Every evening, they gathered around the small dining table, sharing stories about their day. Laughter echoed through the tiny house more often than arguments. Except when it came to Tiana's dreams. ‎Unlike the other children who wanted to become doctors, teachers or nurses, Tiana dreamed of becoming an actress. ‎Not just any actress. ‎She wanted to become the biggest actress in the country. ‎Whenever she found herself alone, her bedroom transformed into a movie set. Standing before the old mirror hanging on the wall, she would rehearse scenes she invented herself. ‎Sometimes she played a queen fighting for her kingdom. ‎Sometimes a lawyer defends an innocent man. ‎Sometimes, she acts as a grieving mother who has lost everything. ‎She cried so convincingly that even she forgot it was only pretend. One afternoon, she picked up her mother's wooden spoon and held it like a trophy. ‎"I want to thank everyone who believed in me," she said with a bright smile, imagining hundreds of cameras pointed at her. "This award belongs to my family..." ‎"Tiana!" ‎Her mother's voice interrupted her imaginary applause. "I'm coming, Mum!" ‎Grace opened the bedroom door and laughed. ‎"Were you acting again?" ‎Tiana smiled. ‎"I was accepting my Best Actress award." ‎Grace smiled and gently touched her daughter's cheek. ‎"Then remember us when you become famous." ‎‎"I won't just remember you ,I'll buy you the biggest house in Meirean Hills mom." ‎Grace kissed her forehead. ‎"I don't need the biggest house; I only need my daughter.” ‎Tiana hugged her tightly. School was Tiana's favorite place, and ‎not because she loved mathematics or science but because every stage belonged to dreamers. Whenever teachers announced a drama competition, every student turned to look at Tiana before the teacher even finished speaking. ‎She always volunteered first. ‎During one cultural celebration, Tiana performed the role of an orphan searching for her mother after years apart. ‎When she finished, the entire school hall fell silent. ‎The hall echoed with applause. Some teachers stood to their feet. ‎Her English teacher, Mrs. Bello, wiped away tears before calling Tiana to the front. ‎"You have a gift," she said proudly. "A real one." ‎Tiana's heart raced. ‎"Do you really think so?" ‎Mrs. Bello smiled. ‎"I don't think so." ‎She paused. ‎"I know so." ‎Those words stayed with Tiana for weeks. ‎Every night before sleeping, she repeated them to herself. ‎I have a gift. ‎I'll become an actress. Nothing will stop me. ‎Despite growing up in an average home, Tiana hated looking ordinary. ‎She carefully ironed her school uniform until it looked brand new, even though it had been patched several times by her mother. ‎She polished her shoes until they shone. ‎If classmates admired her ribbons, she smiled and said they came from an aunt living overseas. ‎If someone asked where her father worked, she simply replied, ‎"He owns a business." ‎It wasn't entirely a lie. ‎He did own a tiny furniture workshop. ‎But she wanted people to imagine something much bigger. ‎Her older brother, David, noticed. ‎One evening, he watched her remove the price tag from a second-hand handbag she had begged her mother to buy. ‎"Why are you pretending?" he asked. ‎"I'm not pretending." ‎"You tell everyone we're rich." ‎"I'm telling them who I'm going to become." ‎David laughed. ‎"You can't build a future on pretending." ‎Tiana folded her arms. ‎"Just wait." ‎"Wait for what?" ‎"The day everyone wishes they knew me." ‎David smiled. ‎That weekend, Tiana accompanied her mother to the market. ‎Near the town square, a small television commercial was being filmed. ‎Huge cameras. ‎Bright lights. ‎Actors wearing expensive clothes. ‎People crowded around the filming location. ‎Tiana stood perfectly still. ‎Her eyes sparkled. ‎She watched the director shout instructions. ‎She watched the cameras roll. ‎She watched an actress repeat the same scene over and over until it was perfect. ‎For everyone else, it was entertainment. ‎For Tiana… ‎It felt like destiny. ‎When filming ended, she gathered the courage to approach the actress. ‎"Excuse me, ma'am." ‎The actress smiled warmly. ‎"Yes?" ‎"I'm going to become an actress one day." ‎The woman smiled kindly. ‎"I hope you do." ‎"No." ‎Tiana said with complete certainty. ‎"I will." ‎‎"I will." ‎The actress admired the confidence in the young girl's eyes. ‎"Then promise me something." ‎"What?" ‎"When success comes... don't lose yourself trying to keep it." ‎Tiana nodded politely. ‎ ‎But in truth... ‎She barely listened. ‎All she could think about was standing where that actress had stood. ‎As the sun disappeared behind the hills, Tiana walked home smiling. ‎The days turned into months, and the little girl who once stood before a cracked mirror slowly became a teenager with dreams far too big for the small town of Meiran Hills. ‎At sixteen, Tiana's name was becoming known throughout the community. Whenever a church organized an Easter drama, people asked for Tiana. ‎Whenever the secondary school hosted a cultural festival, teachers wanted Tiana for the lead role. ‎Whenever a local organization needed someone to perform at an event, they looked for only one person. ‎"Tiana Adebayo." ‎She never disappointed. ‎One Saturday evening, the town hall was filled with parents, students and community leaders for the annual talent showcase. The theme was Hope Beyond Poverty. ‎Tiana played the role of a young girl determined to change her family's future. ‎‎By the time the curtain closed, the audience erupted into applause. ‎Some people stood. ‎Others wiped tears from their faces. ‎Backstage, her drama teacher, Mr. Akin, smiled proudly. ‎"You don't just act, Tiana." ‎She looked at him expectantly. ‎"You make people believe." ‎Those words stayed with her all night. ‎As she lay in bed staring at the ceiling, she whispered to herself, ‎"I'm going to leave Meirean Hills one day." ‎A week later, her father returned home carrying an old newspaper. ‎"Tiana." ‎She looked up from her schoolbooks. ‎"Yes, Daddy?" ‎"I found something you might like." ‎She unfolded the newspaper. ‎Printed in the entertainment section was an advertisement for a talent audition in the nearest city. ‎Her heart skipped. ‎"Daddy..." ‎"You can try." ‎She threw her arms around him. ‎"Thank you!" ‎Samuel laughed. ‎"I'll get it." ‎He smiled. ‎"I hope you do." ‎Then his smile softened. ‎"I'll be fine." ‎Samuel looked at his daughter. ‎She sounded so certain. One afternoon, while walking home from school, dark clouds gathered above Meiran Hills. ‎ ‎Rain began pouring before she could find shelter. ‎As she hurried along the muddy road, she slipped. ‎Her books scattered everywhere. ‎"Oh no..." ‎Before she could pick them up, another pair of hands began helping. ‎"You should watch where you're going." ‎She looked up. ‎A tall young man with warm brown eyes smiled at her. ‎He couldn't have been more than eighteen. ‎He handed her the last notebook. ‎"There." ‎She accepted it. ‎"Thank you." ‎"I'm Adrian." ‎"Tiana." ‎"I know." ‎She looked surprised. ‎"You do?" ‎"You've acted in almost every school play in town." ‎She laughed. ‎"So I'm famous already?" ‎He grinned. ‎"In Meiran Hills? Maybe." ‎They walked together in the rain, sharing Adrian's old umbrella. ‎She learned that he had finished secondary school and was working with his uncle while saving money to attend technical college. ‎"What about you?" he asked. ‎"I'll become an actress." ‎"You say that like it's already happened." ‎"It will." ‎He admired the confidence in her voice. ‎"I hope I get to watch your first movie." ‎She smiled. ‎"You'll get front-row seats." ‎Neither of them knew that this ordinary conversation would become the beginning of a love story. That evening, Grace noticed the smile on her daughter's face. "You look unusually happy." "Do I?” "Very." "It's nothing." Grace laughed. "It wouldn't happen to have anything to do with a boy, would it?" Tiana quickly shook her head. "No!" Her mother smiled knowingly. "Alright." But after Tiana left the room, Grace looked toward Samuel. "Our little girl is growing up." Samuel sighed. "I know." He wasn't afraid that Tiana would fall in love. A few days later, Tiana climbed the tallest hill overlooking Meirean Hills. From there she could see the market, the church, the winding roads and the little house where her family waited for her every evening. She stretched out her arms as the wind rushed past. "One day," she whispered, "I'll leave this town." "I'll become the biggest actress in the country." For a brief moment, she imagined the applause. The cameras. The glamorous dresses. The flashing lights. She smiled. What she couldn't imagine... was loneliness. She couldn't imagine a future where success would come at the cost of the people who loved her most. As the sun disappeared behind the hills, Tiana walked home with hope in her heart. Behind her, Meiran Hills remained peaceful. Ahead of her, destiny was quietly unfolding. And waiting just beyond the horizon... was a choice that would change her life forever. ‎
