Chapter 1: The Night I Met My Destruction
My heels clicked softly against the hallway floor as I balanced the cake box in one hand and a chilled bottle of champagne in the other. Tonight was supposed to be perfect, it was my three-year anniversary with Mark. I had spent the entire afternoon at the salon, gotten my nails done in the deep crimson he likes, and slipped into the black lace lingerie set I had bought with my recent promotion bonus, the type that made me feel dangerous and desired. I smiled to myself, my heart fluttering, as I turned the key in the lock as quietly as I could, the moan hit me first, it was a low and Feminine voice, then the rhythmic creak sound of our bed filled the place. The champagne bottle nearly slipped from my fingers as I pushed the bedroom door open, my stomach dropped. Mark was naked, sweat-slicked, thrusting hard into Sarah, my best friend since college, her legs locked around his waist, with her red nails digging into his back. Sarah’s head was thrown back, mouth open in a cry of pleasure I had never once made in this room. For a frozen second, no one moved. Then Mark glanced over, his eyes glassy with lust, and he kept moving for two more deliberate strokes before he finally stopped, A smirk tugged at his lips. “Ivana,” he said, his voice rough, almost bored. “You weren’t supposed to be home for another hour.” Sarah’s eyes flew open, She made a half-hearted attempt to cover her breasts, but the guilt on her face was paper-thin, she looked… satisfied. The cake box hit the floor with a sickening splat, white frosting and red velvet crumbs exploding across the hardwood. “I….I brought your favorite,” I whispered, the words absurd even as they left my mouth. Mark pulled out of Sarah with a wet sound that made me want to vomit. He didn’t bother covering himself, his c**k was still hard, glistening with another woman’s arousal. “Let’s not do the dramatic bullshit, alright?” He grabbed a towel from the chair and wiped himself casually, “We both know this has been dead for months. You don’t even like s*x, you just lie there, staring at the ceiling like a f*****g corpse. You never once came or made me feel wanted. I’m a man Ivana, I need more than whatever the hell that was.” Each word landed like a slap. Sarah bit her lip, looking away. She didn’t deny anything or defend me, She just sat there in our sheets. My vision blurred, The lingerie I wore beneath my dress suddenly felt ridiculous, cheap, and Pathetic. I had planned to seduce him tonight to prove I could be the type of woman he wanted. “I trusted both of you,” I said, my voice cracking. Mark rolled his eyes. “Yeah, well, trust doesn’t make you wet Ivana, but Sarah does. We’re done.” The finality in his voice shattered the last fragile piece of me, I didn’t sc y ream or throw things at them. I turned, walked out of the bedroom, and kept walking until I found myself inside my car, speeding down the rain-slicked streets with tears streaming down my face. Two hours later, the city lights gave way to sprawling estates and wrought-iron gates. My mother had texted me the address weeks ago, gushing about her new husband, but I had been too busy with work and Marcus to visit. But now I had nowhere else to go. The mansion rose out of the darkness like something from a dream, massive, illuminated, music and laughter spilling from the open French doors. It was my mother's wedding reception, I had completely forgotten. I parked behind a row of luxury cars and killed the engine. My reflection in the rearview mirror was a disaster, mascara streaked, eyes swollen, hair wild from the rain. I looked exactly how I felt,” ruined”. Before I could spiral further, the front doors opened and my mom, Diana, stepped out in a stunning champagne-colored gown, glowing with happiness. “Ivana!” She rushed forward, heels clicking. Her smile faltered as she took in my state, “Oh honey… what happened?” I tried to speak, but only a broken sob came out, she pulled me into a tight hug, smelling of expensive perfume and fresh flowers. “Shh. It’s alright, whatever it is, we’ll handle it. But the reception is still going,I can’t leave the guests right now.” She pulled back, cupping my face with gentle hands. “Go upstairs sweetheart, the third door on the right is a guest bathroom. Freshen up, change into something from the closet, I had some dresses sent over just in case, then come down and join us, Harrison will be so thrilled to finally meet you.” I nodded numbly because I didn’t have the energy to explain anything yet. My mother pressed a keycard into my hand and hurried back inside, already pasting on her hostess smile. I climbed the grand staircase, my heels echoing on the marble floor, the sounds of the party, clinking glasses, a string quartet, and laughter filled the place as if they belonged to another universe. I found the hallway, counted the doors, and pushed open the third one on the right. Steam hit me immediately, warm, scented with sandalwood, something dark and Masculine. I stepped inside, my vision still blurry with tears, and froze, a man stood in the center of the lavish bathroom, completely naked, water droplets traced the hard lines of his muscular chest and abdomen, sliding down toward his powerful thighs. He was tall, well over six feet with broad shoulders and the kind of presence that filled the entire room. His dark hair was wet, slicked back from a strong, chiseled face, a face currently staring at me with intense, storm-gray eyes. He didn’t flinch or cover himself, Instead, the corner of his mouth curved into a slow, dangerous smile. “You’re late,” he said, his voice low and velvet-rough. “But it's worth the wait.”
