It felt like a twist of fate—or something darker. I hadn’t expected to see him again, not in a million years. It had been five years since I made the decision to walk away from that world. Five years since I left everything behind, including him. I had never planned for Grayson Knight to be a part of my life again. Not after everything that had happened. But that nagging feeling in my chest wouldn’t go away. I had seen the flash of recognition in his eyes earlier. He knew who I was, and somehow, I felt like he knew far more than I was prepared to face. "You’re not alone, you know," his voice echoed in my mind. "I’ve been searching for you for years, Lily." The words haunted me. I had tried to move on, to build a life without the constant shadow of him hanging over me. But there was always that pull, that connection we shared, whether I wanted it or not. “Mom, you’re deep in thoughts about him, aren’t you?” I blinked, snapping back to the present. My son, Eli, stood in front of me, his eyes wide with a knowing look. For a moment, I was stunned. It wasn’t just a question—it was a statement, a fact. He wasn’t five years old, not in the way he understood the world. "Who?" I asked, trying to play it off, though my heart skipped a beat. I wasn’t ready for this conversation. Not now. “Grayson Knight,” Eli said matter-of-factly, his gaze steady. "That’s why you’re so quiet today." I froze. How did he know? How could he possibly know what was going on inside my head? My thoughts must have been written all over my face. My mind raced, searching for an answer, a way to explain it away, but it was impossible. Eli had always been perceptive, more so than I ever expected. I knelt down in front of him, brushing my hand through his soft hair, trying to steady my breathing. "I wasn’t thinking about him," I lied, my voice shaky. Eli’s eyes softened, his gaze unwavering. He knew. He always did. "Okay, Mom," he said quietly. There was no judgment in his voice, but the way he looked at me spoke volumes. He could see right through the walls I’d spent so long building around my heart. --- The sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a soft, golden light across the streets. By the time we got home, I felt more exhausted than I had in days. The weight of the day's events, the constant worry, and the emotional exhaustion of dealing with Eli's questions had drained me. I needed to just breathe, to forget for a moment that Grayson Knight existed in this world, that he was real and still haunting my every thought. I tucked Eli into bed, making sure his favorite book was within reach, and kissed him goodnight. His small hand reached up to touch my cheek, and his soft voice whispered, "I love you, Mommy." "I love you too, baby," I murmured, my heart tightening in my chest. But as I entered the apartment, I was stopped dead in my tracks. There, on the kitchen counter, was an envelope with my name written in neat, professional handwriting. I hesitated, my heart sinking as I recognized the familiar handwriting. My pulse quickened. I already knew who this was from. The familiar scent of cologne—Grayson’s cologne—lingered on the envelope. It had to be him. With trembling hands, I opened it. The letter inside was short, direct. *Lily, I know you have questions. But so do I. I need you to come to my office tomorrow. We have unfinished business. —Grayson Knight* The words were like a punch to the gut. My mind whirled with a dozen different emotions—anger, fear, confusion. Why now? Why after all this time? What business could we possibly have left? I threw the letter onto the counter, my mind racing. How could I face him again? How could I sit in front of him after everything we’d been through? After I had spent five years carefully erasing him from my life? But that pull—the one that had never fully gone away—was strong. I had buried it deep, but now, it resurfaced with the force of a tidal wave. I collapsed onto the couch, my hands trembling as I stared at the letter. My thoughts spun wildly, each one more frantic than the last. I wasn’t ready to face him. I wasn’t ready to confront the past that I had worked so hard to leave behind. But then, I remembered the look in Grayson’s eyes when I had seen him earlier that day. That mix of recognition and something deeper—something that made my chest tighten with a strange blend of longing and fear. He hadn’t let me go. He hadn’t forgotten. He’d been searching for me, for all these years. Could I afford to keep running? Could I keep pretending like the past hadn’t shaped me into who I was now? I stood up, walking to the window, looking out at the city below. The lights flickered, and the world felt like it was closing in on me. I couldn’t escape this. Not anymore. I had spent so long trying to outrun the truth, but the truth was always there, lingering in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to pull me back in. I glanced at the clock. Tomorrow would come, whether I was ready or not. And when it did, I would have to face Grayson Knight.
