Grayson Knight. At the time, I didn’t know who he was, or how his name would haunt my every thought for years. I had no idea how that single night would change everything.

Now, here I was, a single mother, doing my best to move on—serving drinks to indifferent hotel guests, keeping everything together while pretending my own world wasn't falling apart.

Eli, my little boy, had grown into a sharp, thoughtful five-year-old. He was smart beyond his years, but the questions he asked… I wasn’t ready for them. I told him his father was gone. I told him that his dad had passed away. But even I knew that was a lie. And worse, it wasn’t the full truth. I wasn’t ready to share that truth with him—not yet. Not ever, maybe.

"Mommy, why do all the other kids have their dads? I don’t like being the only one without one."

His words sliced through me, and I could feel the ache in my chest deepening. I bent down to his level, brushing a strand of hair from his face.

"Eli," I whispered, my voice faltering only for a moment, "You know I love you, right? You're more than enough for me. You’ll always have me."

He gave me a small smile, but it didn’t reach his eyes. That look—the one that said he still didn’t quite believe me—broke me inside.

I had failed him.

"I want to meet her," Grayson said, his voice even, but something in his gut told him this wasn’t just another meeting. This was personal. Far more than he’d expected.

The next morning, I stood outside the hotel, the uneasy knot in my stomach tightening as I looked at the sleek black car parked near the entrance. The sun had barely risen, and already I was tense. Eli’s little hand clung to mine as we walked, his steps light but his silence loud. He hadn’t said much all morning, as if the heaviness in the air had seeped into him, too.

"Mom," he murmured suddenly, his voice soft. "I don’t like when you’re sad."

I stopped in my tracks, crouching down to his level. "I’m not sad, sweetie," I told him, my smile a poor imitation of the one I wanted to give him. "Just a little tired, that’s all."

He nodded, though I could tell he didn’t quite believe me.

We walked the rest of the way to the building in silence, the weight of the day pressing down on my shoulders. And then I saw him.

Grayson Knight.

I froze. His tall, broad frame was unmistakable.

After five years, it felt like a lifetime—and yet, there he was, as though nothing had changed.

"Is everything okay?" Grayson’s voice reached me, smooth and commanding, with that familiar edge of authority. But his eyes… they were filled with something else—something deeper.

We continued walking in silence, my thoughts in a tangled mess. The events of the past kept replaying in my head like a broken record. I hadn’t expected this—hadn’t expected him to come back, to find me. To find us. But there he was, just as enigmatic and enigmatic as I remembered. The building loomed ahead, and the moment my eyes caught sight of him, the world seemed to freeze. I forced a smile, even as my heart pounded in my chest. “I’m fine, thank you.” Eli looked up at me and then back at Grayson, his gaze curious and unafraid. “Thank you for helping us,” Eli said, his voice small but polite. Grayson’s expression softened as he looked down at my son. There was something almost tender in his gaze, and for a brief moment, I saw a flicker of emotion cross his face. Something he didn’t let anyone else see. "Is everything okay here?" Grayson asked, his tone shifting to one of concern. I nodded, though I felt like I was lying to both of them. The truth I had buried deep inside me was clawing its way to the surface. The silence that followed stretched between us, thick and suffocating. My mind raced. How had he found me? And why now? Was I even ready to face him after everything that had happened? And then, Eli—innocent, as always—looked up at me and asked, “Mommy, do you know him?” Grayson hesitated, his gaze flicking from me to Eli. His expression faltered for just a second, but then he straightened, his usual mask of control falling back into place. I opened my mouth to answer, but my words caught in my throat. This wasn’t a conversation I was ready to have—not yet. Not now, and maybe not ever. “I’m fine,” I said, my voice quiet but firm, though it tasted like a lie. A thick, bitter lie. Grayson’s eyes searched mine, and for a moment, I thought he might press further. But instead, he nodded slowly, like he understood that this wasn’t the time or the place for the truth. He studied me for a moment longer, and I could see the conflict in his eyes—whether it was over me, over Eli, or over everything that had happened between us, I couldn’t tell. “You’ve done well,” Grayson said finally, his voice quieter, more sincere than I expected. I blinked, unsure of how to respond. What did he mean by that? I didn’t feel like I had done anything well. If anything, I felt like I was just holding things together by the thinnest of threads. Before I could speak, Eli tugged at my sleeve. "Mom," he whispered, his voice small, "is he my daddy?" The words hit me like a slap, and for the second time in as many minutes, I froze. The weight of his question, so simple, so innocent, cut through me like nothing else. Grayson’s eyes widened, a flash of something—guilt, regret—passing through them before he quickly masked it. I knelt down beside Eli, my hands trembling. “No, sweetie. He’s just someone from Mommy’s past.” Eli nodded, but I could tell he wasn’t entirely convinced. His innocent gaze flickered between me and Grayson, and I could see the questions in his eyes. The same ones I had been running from for years. For the briefest of moments, I caught Grayson’s gaze again, and this time, there was no denying the truth. We were tangled in a web of our own making, and neither of us knew how to escape it.
