Chapter5

I froze, the sharpness of Eli’s voice breaking through the tension in my chest. I turned to see him standing in the doorway of my office, his small face crinkled in confusion, his eyes filled with innocent concern. The weight of my thoughts, the cold grip of the anonymous message, melted away in that instant. I forced a smile, swallowing the rising panic. "Yes, baby?" I said softly, trying to mask the unease in my voice. “Are you okay? You look funny,” Eli said, his little brow furrowed in that endearing way only children could manage. I blinked, momentarily lost in the pure sincerity of his question. It felt as though the world had shifted into slow motion, and suddenly the weight of everything pressing on me—the secrecy, the warnings, the request from Grayson—all seemed a little less significant in the presence of my son. He was the one thing in this chaotic mess that remained untouched, pure, innocent. “I’m fine, sweetie,” I replied, my voice steadier than I felt. “I’m just a little tired.” Eli didn’t seem convinced, but he nodded anyway, walking toward me with his small arms raised for a hug. I scooped him up, holding him close, inhaling the familiar scent of his shampoo and the comfort that came with his embrace. “Can we go home now?” he asked, his voice soft and sleepy. “Of course, baby,” I said, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead. I gave him a gentle kiss on his cheek before putting him back down. I gathered my things quickly, shoving the phone with its cryptic message into my bag, trying not to let the fear coursing through my veins seep into my every move. The air in the office seemed oppressive, thick with unspoken words. I felt like a moth caught in a web of intrigue and danger, unsure of how I had become so tangled, but unable to pull away. Eli and I made our way to the elevator, his tiny hand gripping mine as we entered the quiet space. The familiar hum of the elevator filled the silence, but my mind was anything but quiet. The message I’d received still lingered in my thoughts like a shadow that wouldn’t leave. *You’re in over your head, Lily. Don’t trust him.* It echoed in my mind, a constant reminder that things weren’t as simple as they seemed. Grayson wanted me to investigate a company, but why me? Why did he trust me with something so important, something so secret? And why had Geon looked at me like that earlier—like there was something I didn’t know? I wasn’t an investigator. I wasn’t even supposed to be involved in anything beyond my assistant duties. So why had Grayson brought me into this? The nagging doubt was suffocating. Just as the elevator doors slid open, I heard the familiar sound of my phone vibrating again, this time pulling me from my tangled thoughts. I hesitated for only a moment before checking the screen, my heartbeat quickening with every passing second. Another message. Another unknown number. *You don’t know what you’re dealing with, Lily. Get out while you can.* My stomach dropped. I tried to steady my breathing, but the words made my pulse quicken. Who was sending these? And why now? What could they possibly know? I could feel my grip tightening around my phone, but I didn’t know what to do with the knowledge. The elevator doors slid open to the lobby, and Eli tugged on my hand, bringing me back to the present. I glanced around, seeing the usual bustling crowd of employees coming and going, all of them oblivious to the storm brewing in my mind. I stepped out, Eli walking beside me, though my attention was split between him and the dark feeling that seemed to hang in the air around me. I knew something was off. My instincts were screaming at me, warning me of some unseen danger. We walked toward the exit, but as we neared the door, a shadow caught my eye—Geon, standing just a few feet away. His posture was rigid, his eyes sharp as he scanned the room. His gaze landed on me, his lips pressing into a tight line. For a moment, I thought I saw something flicker in his expression—something unsettling. Caution? Concern? I wasn’t sure, but whatever it was, it felt like a silent message I wasn’t ready to decipher. He didn’t move toward me, though. Instead, he just watched as Eli and I made our way out the door. Once we were outside, the cold night air hit my face like a slap, and I welcomed the sharpness of it, hoping it would clear my head. I could hear Eli talking beside me, but his words were distant, muffled by the buzzing in my ears. Everything felt wrong. I tried to focus on the mundane details of the evening—finding the car, buckling Eli into his seat—but my mind was spinning. The warnings. The secrecy. Grayson’s cryptic request. All of it felt like a puzzle with pieces that didn’t fit. I couldn’t help but wonder if I was being dragged into something I couldn’t understand, something far bigger than I was prepared for. But I had no choice. Grayson trusted me. Or so he said. I wasn’t sure if I believed that anymore. As I pulled out of the parking garage, I caught sight of my phone again, still vibrating in my bag. The unfamiliar number once more. My fingers gripped the steering wheel, my body tensing as I debated whether to look or ignore it. I knew I couldn’t ignore it. My pulse raced as I reached for my phone and unlocked it, my fingers shaking. The message was short. Direct. *It’s not just the company. It’s him. Watch your back, Lily.* I froze. The words were a direct hit. My breath caught in my throat. I didn’t know what to think, what to believe. What was I getting into? I glanced at Eli in the rearview mirror, his small face peaceful in sleep, and for a brief moment, I felt the full weight of my responsibility to him. This wasn’t just about me anymore. Whatever Grayson was asking of me, whatever the messages were hinting at, I couldn’t let it endanger Eli. But how could I back out now? A decision had been made, and I was already too far in. And I had no idea how it would end.
