'That's it, it's official. Am dead! So dead. My tuition and rent were as late as it is. What has my life turned into? F*ck! I'm an i***t! I shouldn't have left home. This was a bad idea.' The voice in Topaz Saffron's head said. 'It's true, I am officially screwed.' She thought as she sat back in the dark dim theater. It wasn't like her rent was way due but she had no idea where the next one was going to come from and of course, she was still on a date with Josh, a radio store guy. They had been seeing each other for about a month. And he was officially her worst boyfriend ever. He kept blabbering about business whilst Topaz fixed a concentrated stare on a large screen.
She wasn't listening and the least she could do was to act like she was engrossed with the movie.
Topaz tared at Josh with a sad expression—he didn't still notice. She had to break up with him. He had been fun...sometimes but he didn't feel like the right one. God! He definitely isn't the right one, he won't stop talking. He didn't even make her feel...tingly and have shivers like all romance crap that filled her bookshelves back home said—not that she believed it either. Just like the others, he wasn't her type—and he clearly talked a lot and deserved someone similar to him.
'Get ready girl! Cause you're going to have a nice long life. How many cats do you want? 20? 30?' The voice mocked. Topaz resisted the urge to cry. Oh! How she missed Saffron, her home, her kingdom. She missed her parents. The maids, at her beck and call and Alexandrite, her little brother—called Alex for short.
She lived a royal princess life—which she was—and she loved it a lot. But like every other human being, she had dreams. As a little girl, she was fascinated by planes and wanted to learn to fly one. After her graduation from one of Saffron's finest private high school. Daily, she insisted on her parents sending her to aviation school, but they rebuked her and decided on hiring private professors. Angered by her parent's conclusion and with a little help from Alex, she ran off with an efficient amount of money and jewels.
A few days ago had clocked it. It had been three years since she ran off. And all the money and jewels had run out. Topaz remembered the day after her disappearance, her face got plastered worldwide on newspapers, tv, and even the internet. They tagged it all sorts #escapee princess some went further to say she eloped with a palace guard cause her parents refused their union.
She stepped into NewYork for a few hours then her neighbors started to get noisy. Everywhere she went in the streets of NewYork, people stopped her jokingly, asking if she was the princess.
It went on for about two weeks. Filled with anger and frustration, she pulled on a black-tinted glasses and wrapped around her almost white, peculiar platinum blonde long hair inside a wide-brimmed hat. She stalked over to the supermarket and bought hair-dye.
Unknowingly to her, she picked one from the expired ones not bothering to check the details. The red color she wanted appeared black instead. Instantly, she fell in love with the color and the rest is history.
Her mind evaporated to the offer Chelsea, her best friend for three years gave her. To get a job. Chelsea, been the best person advised her to get a job. Topaz held back her hiccups, her work...as if. But she had to do something, she already sold most of the jewels she brought with her already.
Topaz felt a light tap on her shoulder, snapping out of her thoughts she looked up to see Josh telling her the movie had come to a close. Silently, they walked out of the cinema. Immediately the entrance door opened, a gush of cool evening air swept them into its embrace. People were crossing over to the other side of the road where there were a sushi restaurant and a bar few blocks away.
Topaz turned away from them, she didn't want to be distracted from her goal and keep Josh I'm the cold again when he should be looking for his girlfriend —an entertainment spoke person perhaps.
Taking a deep breath, she turned to him with a civilized look. "Josh, listen. I have something to tell you," Topaz aid softly, trying to break the bad news in the calmest, civilized manner she could. Never had she have a problem causing heartbreaks. Along with other self-problems she had, one of the top five was her not able to keep a man for a month; maximum, a month and two days.
"Before you say anything. I just want to say am happy to be here with you tonight...and nobody else." He grinned wildly. He was handsome and hot. Topaz thought that was probably caught her attention. He still had his child-like features. His-cropped hair which was styled nicely—and Topaz looked like she went to take a hike. She was wearing a black plain T-shirt and khakis shorts. He looked fit for the date they ventured; wearing blazers, a white t-shirt, and a shiny suit pants.
"Yeah. About that, we can't do it anymore it's just not doing it for me. Am sorry but, this is goodbye."
Josh looked like he had seen a ghost. "Was it something I did?"
'Yeah, you just won't stop talking.'
She placed a hand over her heart, to look sympathetic, "no. It's not you, it's all me. Am so sorry we cannot work out," she removed the hand from her chest and reach over to touch his shoulder, "we are not just meant to be."
He stared down at her hand on him a few seconds before flinching, "was the s*x? Was it bad? I can fix it."
She stared at him. His eyes met hers for a second and he looked away. Why does my life have to be like a novel? She groaned. "No not that at all, you were great."
Suddenly, her phone starts to ring, she pulls it out of her shorts pocket and glanced at the caller ID, she muttered a quick "sorry" to Josh before answering, "hey Chelsea, what's up."
"Am at the new club that just opened across your apartment, Tara, you have to come. Like right now, it's the bomb!!" she screamed into the phone as loud music clouded her voice.
"Really!! Fifteen minutes. I give me fifteen, I'll be there," Topaz said, slipping the phone back in her pocket. She turned over to Josh and he was nowhere to be seen. Squinting her eyes to the low dimmer corner of the road, she saw him. Josh had moved farther down. He was now leaning against a wall.
Smiling brightly, she waved at him, "bye!!!!!" As she walked away from him. For a minute, Topaz swore she saw the look of surprise, mixed with confusion in his eyes.
