Chapter 1: The Rejection
Rose White's heart was pounding as she faced her pack, with Alpha Atlas standing next to her. His once affectionate and adoring eyes now appeared distant, void of any warmth that it once held.
"Rose, you disappoint me," Atlas declared, his words resonating through the assembled pack. "Your wolf resists submitting, and I will not be bonded to a wolf that will not submit” Atlas thundered with anger.
Rose gasped! His words struck her down to her core. This was not the tone she was used to, not from him anyway, and this certainly was not what she was expecting to hear on a day as this. Tears stung at her eyes as she struggled to make sense of his words.
"Atlas, no, I beg of you!" She managed to say dropping both knees to the ground in the hope that when he sees her like that, he would change his mind.
Atlas looked away. He wasn't going to bend, he couldn't, not with what he knows, not with what he had seen.
"You're not my partner anymore, Rose. He said with his back turned against her "You are no more a member of this pack". And with that he walked away without a second glance at her.
Her world was suddenly turned upside down. Too many questions reeled through her mind threatening to burst through her. “Why was this happening to her”? “What was she going to do now”?
She had no time to think through as she felt a hand on her back, her mother. In the midst of everything that was happening, she had forgotten that her mother was there with her.
"Come, Rose," Luna, her mother, said with a mocking grin plastered on her face, "It's time for us to go." "You are no longer allowed to be here."
Rose's heart was filled with sadness as she got up from the ground. She couldn't take her gaze off Atlas even though he was far away now. She wiped her eyes with the back of her palm and turned to face her mother.
"Why?" she asked quietly more to herself than to anyone else as tears flowed down her cheeks. "What was the reason for his refusal towards me?"
As they walked away from the pack's territory, her mind was filled with thoughts of her rejection. She felt completely lost and isolated, her mind was shattered in a million directions. “What will she do now”? She wondered.
Although she was no stranger to the feeling of rejection, this was a worse blow than anything she had ever experienced in the past. The reason wasn't difficult to know. She loved Him. She loved Atlas! That was why this was too much for her right now.
"You are strong." A voice whispered as quietly as the wind. This voice, always whispering to her from within, especially in her moments of pain was back again. Who it was, she didn't know.
She soon sensed that she was been followed. True to her feelings, she saw a shadowery figure emerge from the dark blocking her from moving forward.
"Hello, Rose," the figure greeted, its eyes shining under the moon's light. “I am Scarlett Blackwood and my purpose is to cause extreme misery in your life”
Rose's eyes grew wide as fear gripped her entire being. Her mother thinking she was behind her kept walking without realizing what was going on and that Rose was not with her.
Rose wasn't about to show this figure that she was scared. She mustered all her strength and looked straight at it.
"What is it that you want?" Rose demanded, attempting to maintain a steady voice.
"Oh, I simply wanted to introduce myself," Scarlett declared, her eyes gleaming with malicious intent. In our world, Rose, you are very well-known. Alpha Atlas's rejected partner. "How... pitiful." Scarlet said with mock pity.
Rose was filled with anger. She couldn't deal with this right now. It took all her will power to restrain herself from responding. She was unaware of Scarlett's capabilities and did not wish to provoke her.
"Go away," Rose managed to say as she turned to leave.
Scarlett was too fast. She seized Rose's arm tightly, her hold as strong as a vice.
"Rose, you're staying right here," Scarlett whispered angrily. "I have a message for you from Alpha Atlas's father, you know, she continued aware that Rose interest was piqued with what she just said.
“He desires for you to understand that our pack will never accept you. Rose, you are an outsider”, an outcast”.
Tears started to well up in Rose's eyes. Scarletts words were delivered like blows to her inside. She knew her rejection was final earlier on when Atlas told her so but now hearing these words again was like adding more salt to her injury.
She attempted to break free from Scarlett's hold as she couldn't think of any appropriate response to give to what she just heard. The more she tried thought, the more Scarlett's grip grew stronger.
"Allow me to leave!" Rose yelled, her voice reverberating throughout the forest.
Scarlett simply laughed . "You must hear me out before you can leave, Rose”. “ I have a small secret that I want to tell you as well, an undisclosed information that will alter everything.”
What more could she bear? Her world had already come crashing down, now there was more?
Rose racing heart wouldn't stop beating loudly. Scarlett moved closer to her to deliver this new information.
Scarlett whispered into her ears “Alpha Atlas didn't refuse you because of your wolf, Rose. He turned you down because of your family” she continued, There are untold secrets of your family, secrets that could lead to your death”. With that, Scarlett let go of Rose's hand and walked away.
Rose felt dizzy as she tried to process Scarlett's words. “Secrets? What secrets was Scarlett referring to? What about her family was she unaware of”?
As if Scarlett heard her thoughts she slowly turned back to face Rose with a mischievous grin
"Consider it, Rose, and keep in mind that you are never truly alone, someone is always watching you” Scarlett said before vanishing into the darkness.
Rose observed Scarlett disappear into the shadows, her heart still pounding with fright.
What was Scarlett trying to tell her? Who was watching her? Rose looked all around her trying to see if she was being followed again.
If she was feeling distraught before this episode, she felt completely overwhelmed now.
Not only did she have a rejection to deal with, she now had a family secret lingering over her head to contend with. How bad could her day get.
"Do not trust anyone not even those closest to you” That voice again from her thoughts whispered.
With unsettled mind and more questions, she made her way to her mother and sister. Could she trust them with what she just heard? She wondered.
Upon getting closer, she noticed her mother, Luna, and her sister, Victoria, standing by the edge of the forest.
"Rose, what's the matter?" Luna inquired with a hint of worry in her voice.
Rose paused, uncertain about how much information to disclose.
"I had an interesting conversation with someone, Scarlett Blackwood, Rose began "She made comments... regarding Alpha Atlas's father." "And the secrets of our family."
Victoria squinted. "What type of secrets?"
Rose with worry and doubt etched on her face said "I am unsure." “Scarlett warned that I could end up dead”
Luna's demeanor became frosty. "Do not fret, Rose. "We will look after you."
Rose couldn't get rid of the sense that something wasn't right. That something was kept hidden from her by her mother and sister.
Heading towards their modest cottage located on the edge of the pack's land, Rose couldn't shake the feeling that she was being lured into a dangerous situation.
As they approached the cottage entrance, Rose detected a soft noise coming from the bushes close by.
With racing heart she turned quickly yet she found nothing in sight.
"Rose, what is the matter?" Victoria inquired, her tone laced with worry.
Rose paused, uncertain of how to respond. When she looked back at her sister, she saw something that cauued fear to course through her veins.
A tiny sheet of paper, placed in Victoria's pocket, containing a message written in red ink.
"Let's meet at the ancient oak tree tonight at midnight"
Rose felt her heart leap with realization of the truth.
Her sister was working with Scarlett Blackwood as ally.
She couldn't believe it. Her sister? Working with Scarlett? What in the world was going on?
A feeling of sickness swept through her when she fully understood the depth of her sister's disloyalty.
"Victoria, what is happening?" Rose angrily demanded, her voice quivering.
Victoria's eyes grew wide with shock, but she swiftly regained composure. "I'm not sure what you're referring to, Rose," she commented, her voice laced with innocence.
Rose was unmoved. She knew what she just witnessed and her sisters feign of innocence wasn't going to cut it. Her sister knew something and worse still, she was hiding it from her? Why?
"Victoria, stop deceiving me," Rose said angrily. I just saw that creature, and now look” she continued pointing to the paper containing the message hanging loosely from her sister's pocket.
“You work with Scarlett”? She asked angrily.
Victoria's face transformed, revealing a brief moment where Rose detected a hint of guilt in her eyes.
"Rose, try to understand," Victoria said, her voice becoming gentler. I'm simply trying to keep us safe Victoria said
“Scarlett possesses knowledge about our family's history, knowledge that could be dangerous if it ends up in the wrong hands and could result in our deaths”.
Rose's anger increased, she couldn't believe what she was hearing. What was Victoria trying to say? What hidden secrets did their family have?
They were interrupted by their mother who had emerged from the cottage as she had previously gone inside.
"Girls, that's enough she said with a firm voice.
“We will talk about this at another time, for now, let's go us on leaving this place, we are in danger if we stay for a moment longer”
Rose reluctantly agreed with a nod, continuing to struggle to understand the new information she had received.
While they were gathering their things and leaving the cottage, she couldn't rid herself of the sense that she was venturing into a risky situation.
As they were about to depart, Rose heard a voice say to her
“Do not trust anyone Rose. no
t even your family , don't trust them.”
This voice again? Not now, she needed to make sense of everything, she will have to deal with this later.
