¶~¶~¶~¶~¶~¶~¶~ JORDAN's POV Last night I cried myself to sleep holding the pendant on my neck, the only thing that kept my mother alive in my head. Elizabeth was a name only my mother called me. I hate the thought of another person actually saying it, but the T's and their stepmother were persistent on calling me Elizabeth. Today was the second day in the second week since I came to LEA, and it had been fun but not exactly fun, and now I think it just got worse. Now Taylor and Tyler have arrived with a new chicken. I was sure they would make my life miserable, and I surely had to get out of this room. I'll look till after the orientation. Maybe I could have a chance of submitting an appeal to the board. I quickly came out from the bathroom, I had wondered how Alexander had his bath but It was probably none of my business. Putting on my uniform and the necessaries. I rushed out to look for Rachel. I had a class by nine, and to crown it all, it was biology practical. I headed down to the cafeteria only to see Rachel and the twins sitting with Angela and some other girls I assumed were her cohorts. I shook my head and stared around; I was stuck with Sara, who was waving from across an empty table. Which was neither an A, B, nor C. I sometimes wonder which league she was in. “Hey, pweetie." She laughed. “Hey, you look cheerful this morning," I replied. “Do I?” She pouted, and I laughed. She knew how big her nose was. ”Well…the orientation party's coming up. Everyone's excited." “Except me, obviously," I smiled. "You look like you had a rough night." She muttered softly. "Yeah... It'll pass," I said and ordered my food. As soon as it came, I dived into it with undivided attention. “Careful there, scholarship student… Not all of us have that kind of food at home." A voice resounded from across the cafe. I looked up to see the students staring at me. Angela's voice attracted them. The whole cafe burst into laughter, with Taylor's and Tyler's cackles louder. I didn't reply but continued eating. “Wanna go now?" Sara asked softly. I felt like holding her neck; I hated the soft voice she was trying to use on me. But instead I declined politely. “Soo…you didn't say anything about yourself," she said again, trying to bring up a conversation, but I noticed her wave to a table. Turning to the A's table, my eyes fell on a familiar face. Alexander was staring at me intensely with hard looks. I opened my mouth agape as food fell out. “What the f**k?" I whispered. “Yeahh… You didn't notice?? He's been on it since you entered the cafe," she shrugged. “And you were waving him," I asked. "Noo...pft... Was waving at my brother Darren," she said. "Wait...what?" I said with wide eyes. “Why am I not with them right?” She asked. I nodded slowly. “Well… I don't just want to be with them; their lifestyles are boring. All about shoes and shows. Hair and phones, it's all boring, Jordan." She said, and suddenly I stopped looking at her as a boring person. She sounded so reasonable right now. “Let’s move." She said and stood up. I could see Angela watching my every move and the twins waiting for a reaction, Rachel a faithful bird to them. Never knew she could be like this. It hurts, but I know she wants popularity. She's always wanted it since we were kids, and I had no issue with it, but this?? This was extreme. I cleaned my mouth and stood up with Sara, walking out with my head up even if my legs wobbled at the intense stare from Alex. ¶~¶~¶~¶~¶~¶~¶~¶~ “See you later, Jordan, at practice?” Sara said as we parted ways. ”Sure… I might be available, so yeah," I said, and she smiled. The bell rang for first period, and I took a deep breath. I wanted to get down to the class before anyone else got there just to avoid the stares. Students walked down to get to their classes, but I had already gotten to mine. I took my seat close to the best instruments we were to use for practicals; at least I could get a better view. Within 30 minutes the class started filling up and the teacher entered. I never knew Angela offered biology. Hell!! I thought I had gotten rid of her in the cafeteria. She smiled with a snort, and she passed my chair going to the seat opposite mine. At least Alexander doesn't offer it. That was a relief. “Good day, students. Hope you all had a good night. I vividly remember briefing you all on today's work, so therefore we'll begin with the topic of observing stomata in a leaf peel, but before that I want everyone to get their materials needed for the experiment. He said, "And listen, sit on the board." As he typed it on the tab, it appeared on the screen. Topic: Observing Stomata in a Leaf Peel* “So class, our aim today is to prepare a leaf peel and observe stomata and guard cells under the microscope." Materials: - Fresh leaf from Tradescantia - Forceps, razor blade - Microscope slide, coverslip - Dropper, water, or dilute iodine - Microscope “You go get the microscope slide from my table," he said to me. I grumbled a little and stood up. “Even with a scholarship she grumbles," Angela whispered to my hearing and the students around us. They waited to see my reaction, but I kept quiet. I wasn't going to let a common nitwit destroy the class. I dutifully walked away to Mr. Cleo's table inside another room in the same lab to bring him the slides. By the time I came back, a red/black-haired guy was sitting on my chair, and there was only one vacant chair next to him. And the worst of it all, they had all been paired up. I gritted my teeth in annoyance and walked to Mr. Cleo, giving him the slides. “You took long enough," he said. “The slides were kind of too small to see," I said, and he nodded. I walked back to the site beside Alexander as I took my place. Angela, who was suddenly beside James, glared at me. James smiled at me; I did the same. “Chop chop, kids; get to work. The procedures are already on the board as you can see," he said. I sat next to Alexander as he took hold of the microscope. His skin brushed against mine, and goosebumps appeared on my skin. I took the leaf, pulled out the epidermis using the forceps, and gently put it on the slide. He took it and placed it on the slide, as it seemed he was in charge of the microscope. I looked at James as we smiled to each other; it was getting weird each minute. The air felt extremely heavy, and Alexander's breath kept fanning my neck. "You're breathing on my neck," I whispered. He didn't reply, but I couldn't feel his breath any longer. "Have you done this before?” He asked when James's smile was getting too obvious (even the students were starting to notice), and I shook my head. "Good, then focus!” he said with a sharp voice that could cut through ice. And I actually jerked to the voice. I hated how scared I was just now. Quietly and slowly, with rubbing of skins and secret glances, we finished. “Excellent teamwork, Jordan and Alexander." The teacher clapped. Again, Angela's glares cut through me. He later wrote out the results on the board after everyone was done, and apparently only James and Angela hadn't gotten theirs right because she kept making mistakes and almost peeled the leaf off the leaf. That's just my dark humor. *Expected Results - *Stomata*: Tiny pore-like openings scattered on the leaf surface - *Guard cells: A pair of kidney-shaped cells surrounding each stoma - *Epidermal cells*: Irregular cells with wavy walls between stomata “That’s all for today, guys; see you next time or never," he grunted and left us laughing. The students hurried out of the class eager to go gist and gossip. News were always spreading round. “You were amazing." James said "Oh, stop it," I snorted. I actually liked the compliment. "Ohh, baby boo," Angela called to Alexander. “Let’s go for a walk, shall we?" She asked, smiling, all teeth. ”Not interested right now," he replied coldly. She smiled and turned to me. "Congrats, Jordan, on your first try," she sneered and sashayed away. “Well, thank you, princess," I replied, and James laughed. “She’s kind of really dumb," he whispered to my hearing; I hit his shoulder almost immediately. Alexander stared at the both of us and slowly walked away. “That guy is so weird," I said. “Weird is a big word," James muttered with tensed jaws. Fireeeee!!! Fireeeee!! A voice yelled in the hallway.
