Chapter 7: The Ticking Clock The jungle was thick and alive with the sounds of the night as Ava, Leo, and Kai stumbled into the clearing. Their breaths came in heavy pants, their hearts still racing from the near-death encounter with the creature in the ruins. They had barely escaped, but the creature’s screeches still haunted the air, echoing through the trees. “We… we made it out,” Leo panted, his hand on his knees as he tried to steady himself. Ava didn’t answer immediately. She was too busy looking over her shoulder, making sure they weren’t being followed. Her instincts told her that the danger wasn’t over—not by a long shot. The creature they had left behind was powerful, and if it could track them, then so could the others. There had to be more like it, lurking beneath the surface, waiting for the right moment to strike. “We need to keep moving,” Ava said finally, her voice sharp with urgency. “We can’t stay here. We’ve only got a few hours before whoever—whatever—is chasing us catches up.” “I agree,” Kai said, his voice strained. He wiped the sweat off his brow, clearly exhausted. “But we need to figure out what to do next. We can’t keep running forever.” Leo stood up, his eyes scanning the jungle around them. “We have to find shelter first. I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but we’ve got no supplies, no plan… and no backup.” “Leo’s right,” Ava said, nodding. “We need to find somewhere safe to rest. We’ll regroup and figure out our next move. But we’re not going back to the village. It’s too dangerous there.” Kai glanced at her. “Where do you suggest we go? There’s nowhere out here except more jungle and ruins. And there’s something else we need to think about—something I don’t think we’ve considered.” Ava’s eyes narrowed. “What’s that?” “The Legacy,” Kai said. “The more we uncover about it, the more I think it’s connected to something much bigger than we originally thought. Whoever built those ruins and created those creatures—they didn’t just leave them behind. They’re guarding something. The Legacy isn’t just an artifact, it’s part of a network, a system. It’s all connected.” Ava’s pulse quickened. Kai was right. The Legacy wasn’t just about the object they had found—it was part of a larger scheme, something far more complex and dangerous than any of them had imagined. If the Legacy was part of a network, what kind of power was it hiding? And who was left to guard it? “So, we have to find the rest of the system,” Leo said, his voice grim. “That’s great. But how do we even begin? We barely made it out of the last place alive.” Kai looked at him, his expression thoughtful. “I don’t have all the answers, but I know one thing for sure: whatever’s coming after us is only a small part of a much larger picture. The map we found—it’s not just leading us to hidden relics. It’s a map to something deeper. Something that’s been buried for a reason.” “We don’t have time to waste,” Ava interjected. She could feel the weight of the situation pressing on her shoulders. “We need to get ahead of whoever is after us. We need to find out what the Legacy is really about before it’s too late.” Leo, still catching his breath, gave a reluctant nod. “Fine. But first, we need a plan. We can’t keep running blindly.” Ava scanned the jungle around them. The trees loomed overhead, their dense branches twisting together to form a canopy that blocked out the sky. It was the perfect place to hide—if they could find a safe spot. The sound of rushing water caught her attention. “There,” she said, pointing to a faint glimmer of light through the trees. “There’s a river up ahead. We can follow it for a while and get to higher ground. It’ll give us some cover.” “Good idea,” Kai said. “Water can lead us to resources, and we might be able to find shelter along the banks.” The three of them quickly gathered what little equipment they had and started toward the river. Ava led the way, her eyes sharp as she scanned the path ahead. Every sound in the jungle felt like a warning, every crackling twig like the approach of danger. Her instincts screamed at her to move faster, but she knew they couldn’t afford to make any mistakes. As they reached the river, they followed its winding path for hours, trying to distance themselves from the ruins and any threats that might be close behind. The water was cold and fast, crashing over rocks as it tumbled through the forest, but it offered them both guidance and a sense of security. No one would expect them to follow it—they’d be assuming they were heading in a completely different direction. By the time night fell, they had reached a small clearing by the river’s edge. A dense thicket of trees surrounded them, providing a natural barrier. Ava felt a wave of exhaustion wash over her as they set up a small camp. The fire was barely a whisper in the night, but it was enough to keep the shadows at bay. “I’ll take the first watch,” Ava said, sitting on a log and pulling her jacket tighter around her shoulders. The night air was chilly, and the dampness of the jungle seemed to seep into her bones. “I’ll take second,” Kai volunteered, his voice low. Leo nodded, already lying down with his arms behind his head. “Then I’ll get some sleep. It’s been a long day.” Ava stared into the flickering flames, her mind racing. They had made it out alive, but they couldn’t rest for long. Whatever the Legacy was, they needed to uncover it before it was too late. The clock was ticking. The more time they spent in the jungle, the more dangerous it became. Whoever—or whatever—was after them was relentless. The creature they had seen in the ruins was just the beginning. As Ava sat, watching the shadows stretch around her, she couldn’t help but feel that they were being pulled toward something bigger than themselves. There was more to the Widow’s Legacy than they could possibly understand, and the closer they got to the truth, the more perilous the journey became. Suddenly, her thoughts were interrupted by a distant sound—something breaking through the silence. It wasn’t the usual jungle noise. It was something else. Ava stiffened, her heart racing. What was that? She stood up, hand on the hilt of her knife, her eyes scanning the dark tree line. The noise was getting closer. Her pulse quickened, and she felt a surge of fear. Something’s out there. She wasn’t alone. End of Chapter 7
