Chapter 9: The Chase Begins
Ava didn’t need to look twice to know that the thing circling overhead wasn’t a bird. It wasn’t any creature they had seen before. It was large, its wingspan stretching wider than anything native to Earth. It swooped through the air with unnatural speed, casting a long, menacing shadow over the jungle below.
"Move, now!" Ava barked, grabbing Leo by the arm and yanking him to his feet. Kai was already on the move, his eyes locked on the sky.
The screeching sound from above was deafening, a horrifying noise that sent chills down Ava’s spine. The creature was closer now, diving towards them with a terrifying speed. It was coming straight for the ridge.
"What is that thing?" Leo gasped, his voice shaky as he looked up, trying to make sense of the nightmare above them.
"I don't know," Ava shouted back. "But we need to get out of here. NOW!"
Without waiting for a response, Ava led the charge down the ridge, scrambling over rocks and through thick underbrush. The sound of the creature’s wings pounding through the air echoed above them, sending shudders through the ground as if it were shaking the earth itself.
Kai was the fastest of the group, moving with an agility that Ava admired. He darted ahead, slashing through the dense vines that blocked their path. Ava followed closely behind, with Leo struggling to keep up. The jungle, once a guide, had now become a treacherous maze. Every step felt like a gamble, and the trees seemed to close in, narrowing their escape route.
Suddenly, the creature screeched again—louder this time, as if it was honing in on them. Ava risked a glance over her shoulder, her heart sinking in her chest. The creature was no longer circling—it was diving straight at them, its massive claws glinting in the dim light, aiming for Leo.
"Leo!" Ava screamed.
Leo barely had time to react before the creature was upon him. With terrifying precision, it swooped down and grabbed him by the arm, lifting him off the ground with a strength that defied all logic. Ava's heart leaped into her throat. She felt the air leave her lungs as she watched Leo dangle helplessly from the creature’s claws, his body going limp.
"No!" Kai shouted, his voice breaking.
Without thinking, Ava sprinted forward, adrenaline coursing through her veins. She didn’t stop. She didn’t think. She just ran, her legs pumping as fast as they could, every instinct screaming at her to save her friend.
"Come on!" she shouted to Kai, who was now right behind her. "We can’t let it take him!"
They charged forward, but Ava’s eyes never left the creature and Leo, now swinging helplessly in the air, higher and higher with each passing moment.
"We need to get it to release him!" Kai shouted, pulling a small device from his pack. It looked like a modified grenade launcher. Ava had no idea how it worked, but at this point, she didn’t care. She just needed to get Leo back.
The creature was now high above them, its screeching echoing in the jungle, like a warning to anyone who dared approach.
Kai aimed the device, his hands steady despite the terror in his eyes. He fired.
The projectile zipped through the air and struck the creature’s wing. For a moment, the creature veered off course, screeching in pain, its wings flapping erratically. Leo was momentarily free from its grasp, plummeting toward the ground.
Ava’s breath caught in her chest as she reached for Leo, diving beneath him to break his fall. She caught him midair, the force of his body hitting hers like a freight train. They crashed to the ground in a heap, but Ava was quick to roll them both out of the way just as the creature recovered and came swooping back in for another attack.
“Leo, are you alright?” Ava asked, her voice frantic as she shook him.
Leo groaned, slowly blinking his eyes open. "I think... I think I’m okay. Just... just a little dizzy."
“Stay down,” Ava said firmly. She could see the creature coming back for another strike. There wasn’t much time.
“We need to get him up,” Kai said urgently, already crouching next to them. "It won’t stop coming after us unless we take it down."
“I don’t think it’s that easy,” Ava muttered, her eyes scanning the creature’s movements. It was circling above them now, clearly preparing for another attack. She could feel the weight of the situation bearing down on her—if they didn’t act fast, they’d all be dead.
“Any ideas?” Leo asked, still dazed but now sitting up with some effort.
Ava didn’t have time to explain. Her mind was racing. She needed a plan—a real plan—and fast. She could see the creature gaining momentum in the sky, each beat of its wings sending shockwaves through the air.
“I need you two to stay down,” Ava said quickly, trying to think of something, anything, that could help. “I’ve got an idea. Trust me.”
Without waiting for their response, Ava sprinted in the opposite direction from where the creature was circling, hoping to draw its attention away from Leo and Kai. The creature screeched again, its eyes tracking her every move. Perfect.
She ducked behind a large tree, pulling her pack around her and rifling through it. There wasn’t much left, but she had one thing she was certain would work—a flash grenade. She didn’t know if it would work on this thing, but she had no other choice. The noise from the creature’s screeching was overwhelming, and its speed was terrifying. Ava’s heart raced, but she focused on the task at hand.
As the creature’s shadow passed over her, Ava threw the grenade with all her might, the small object whistling through the air before exploding with a blinding flash of light.
The creature screamed in pain, its massive wings flapping wildly. It dropped, spiraling out of control toward the ground, its screeches filled with fury and confusion. Ava dove out of the way, narrowly avoiding being crushed by its massive body as it slammed into the earth with a deafening thud.
Leo and Kai rushed forward, helping Ava to her feet. The creature was struggling to regain control, its wings flapping wildly, but it was clearly disoriented. It wouldn’t be able to attack again—not for a while.
Ava didn’t waste a second. “We’ve got to move, NOW!”
They sprinted, faster than they ever had before, heading back down the ridge, away from the creature’s temporary crash site.
Ava didn’t stop to look back. She didn’t know how long it would take the creature to recover, but they didn’t have the luxury of time.
They had to find the Legacy. And they had to do it before whatever that thing was found them again.
