Prolouge
Flashback 5 years ago....
Each desperate whisper was swallowed by the endless darkness of the forest. My feet pounded against the damp soil as I stumbled forward, branches clawing at my arms and face. Blood trickled from cuts I didn't have time to notice. My heart pounded in my chest, louder than the rustling leaves and the steady footsteps behind me.
Run, Arya... don't stop...
Tears blurred my vision, but the fear burning in my veins kept me moving. The weight of the ropes still biting into my wrists ached, but it was nothing compared to the terror creeping up my spine.
"No escape," a voice echoed from behind, smooth and terrifyingly calm.
I gasped sharply, forcing my legs to move faster. But the river... it was right in front of me now. No more paths. No more escape.
A shadow moved behind me. "Your hiding is over."
I spun around, breathless. A figure emerged from the darkness, the metallic glint of a gun reflecting the moonlight. My body froze.
"Please..." I whispered.
A smile tugged at the corner of her lips.
A deafening gunshot rang out.
Blood dripped onto the forest floor as I gasped for air, clutching my shoulder where the bullet had grazed me. My body shook violently, not just from the cold, but from the sheer terror seeping into my bones.
"Do you think you can escape?" Her voice was calm, almost amused, as she walked toward me, each step deliberate.
I crawled backward, my hands trembling, fingers digging into the damp soil. I winced as my injured shoulder brushed against a sharp rock. The pain was unbearable, but I bit my lip to keep from crying out.
"Why... why are you doing this?" I asked, voice barely above a whisper.
She crouched down in front of me, her eyes sharp and unforgiving. "You don't need to know."
A cold chuckle escaped her lips. "But if you want to know... you have a guilt you're not aware of."
Her words sent a shiver down my spine. Guilt? I couldn't think of anything I had done to deserve this.
"P-please have mercy... I don't want to die..." My voice cracked, tears falling freely down my cheeks.
She tilted her head, pretending to consider my plea. "Mercy? That's not in my vocabulary."
Before I could react, she grabbed my arm, dragging me up forcefully. I cried out in pain.
"But I want to play," she whispered, her breath cold against my ear.
In one swift motion, she pushed me forward. I stumbled, but I kept my balance. She gestured to the river.
"Run. I'll give you a head start."
My legs felt like lead, but survival instinct kicked in. I sprinted toward the river, the sound of rushing water growing louder. My mind raced. Was this some twisted game to her?
I could hear her footsteps behind me, slow but steady. She was enjoying this.
I reached the riverbank, the icy water splashing onto my feet. I turned, panting, searching for an escape.
Then, I saw it-a narrow path leading up the cliffside. Without thinking, I climbed, every muscle in my body screaming in protest.
Her voice echoed below. "Run, Arya. Just run."
I didn't dare look back. Reaching the top, I collapsed, gasping for air. But there was no time to rest. I forced myself up, my eyes scanning the area. A small abandoned cabin loomed ahead.
I stumbled toward it, pushing the door open. It creaked loudly. I winced.
Inside, it was dark and empty, save for an old wooden table and chair. I hid behind the table, pressing my hand over my mouth to silence my ragged breaths.
Footsteps.
She was here.
"Come out, come out, wherever you are," she sang softly.
I bit down on my knuckles, tears streaming down my face.
Her shadow passed by the window. I held my breath, praying she wouldn't find me.
Then, silence.
I waited, every second stretching into eternity.
Suddenly, the door creaked open slowly.
I closed my eyes.
Please...
Footsteps echoed in the small cabin, each step measured and deliberate. I pressed my back against the wall, forcing my breaths to stay silent.
"I know you're here," she whispered.
I peeked through the gap between the table's legs. Her black boots came into view, stopping just inches away.
A single tear slid down my cheek.
Her fingers grazed the surface of the table. My heart pounded so loudly I was sure she could hear it.
Then, she crouched down.
Our eyes met.
My scream got caught in my throat as she lunged at me. I scrambled backward, knocking over the chair. She grabbed my ankle, yanking me toward her.
"You have nowhere to run!" she hissed.
I kicked with all my strength, my foot connecting with her face. She cursed, releasing me.
I bolted out the door, the cold night air biting at my skin. My legs screamed in protest, but I pushed forward.
A single gunshot rang out.
I ducked, stumbling into the dense forest. Branches scratched my face, but I didn't stop.
"You won't get far!" she yelled, her voice filled with rage.
I kept running, the adrenaline masking the pain in my body.
Suddenly, I tripped over a root, falling hard. My breath hitched as I rolled onto my back.
The woman stood above me, gun aimed at my head.
"Game over, Arya."
Please... no... My tears fell uncontrollably.
My body froze as she c****d the gun, her finger steady on the trigger. Time seemed to slow down.
Bang!
The deafening shot echoed through the forest. Pain exploded in my shoulder, forcing me to my knees. Blood soaked through my white blouse. My breathing turned shallow.
"It's not over yet," she hissed, stepping closer. The muzzle of the gun pressed against my forehead. I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing myself.
Bang!
Another shot rang out.
Help... help me...
