Just like that, my plans to escape kept failing.
Stefano was very serious when he said that someone would be watching my every move. It turns out, every time I tried to jump through the window, I always got caught by Stefano's lieutenant, Lorenzo.
I have seen him interact with Stefano a few times and they seem to be very close. He was Stefano's best man at the small wedding I was forced to have with Stefano.
I jumped, cried, refuse to eat and refuse monitored walks around the mansion. I did everything to stop Stefano from making me marry him but he kept threatening me with the people I care about. I just had to accept the reality of things and move forward.
My door opens wide and Valentina steps into the room dressed in an all-black outfit. Valentina is Stefano's consigliere and they seem to be close friends too.
"Breakfast is ready. Would you rather have it in your room or in the dining hall?" She asks.
"My room." I say in a bored tone. That is exactly what I have been doing ever since I got here, having breakfast in my room. As a matter of fact, the only one time I stepped out of my room was when I had to attend my own wedding. Aside that, the room is practically my home and I am slowly getting attached to it.
"Are you sure? Stefano and Lorenzo are in a meeting so you do not have to worry about seeing them," Valentina says with a straight face. I have noticed that she is sort of nice to me even though she plays tough.
I appreciate all of her kind gestures but I will never feel at ease in this place, never.
"In my room is fine by me," I state. Valentina sighs, she turns around and walks out of my room.
All I do is sit in my room every day, waiting for something to happen. Something like Cristiano might come back to his senses and come and save me from the mafia's captivity.
In some minutes' time, Valentina appears with a tray in her hand. She places it on the bed right in front of me and slowly begins to walk away.
"Wait." I yell at her. She turns around to gaze at me with a raised brow.
"Are you going to lock the room? I would really appreciate it if you do not lock the door this time. I feel a bit suffocated." I am not lying; I really do feel suffocated and I plan to leave my room after breakfast.
"Aurora, if you plan to escape...." She starts but I interrupt her midway her sentence with a loud cough.
"I already know that there is no way for me to escape, I would be stupid to try for the sixteenth time," I say. Valentina nods her head with a weak smile, she turns around and walks away without locking the door.
I release a heavy sigh and munch on my pasta and meatball sauce for breakfast. After that, I change into more comfortable clothes and make my way down the stairs.
Everything feels so awkward and different, the entire mansion is almost as silent as a graveyard. Just the sound of maids and butlers moving around and working fills the air.
I gulp a lump down my throat and wonder if Stefano used to live in this mansion all by himself. I mean, one thing I know for sure is that Valentina and Lorenzo do not live here, it is almost as if they do but I once heard them saying that they have families to tend to.
I release a heavy sigh and freeze right in front of a big brown door. I scrunch my brows in confusion as I take a few steps towards the door. I hear familiar voices like those of Lorenzo and Stefano. This must be where they must be having their meeting.
My mind tells me to turn around and leave them to discuss their boring meeting stuff but my body freezes at that position when I hear Lorenzo call out my name. "Aurora."
Wait, what did I do? Is this a meeting about me?
I look around to see if anyone is passing and when I see that no one is, I lean on the door to eavesdrop on their conversation.
"Aurora will be of her best behavior, Lorenzo. She knows that there is no escape for her." Stefano says in a defensive tone.
"How can you trust her so easily, Stefano? After everything her family did? I mean her family consists of traitors. Look at how easy it was for her brother to sell her off to you. Do you not think it is somehow a trap?" Lorenzo says in a harsh tone.
What does he mean by everything my family did? Has my family in any way offended Stefano or rather the Conti family?
"Trap?" I hear Stefano chuckle and continue "Lorenzo, I am not stupid. I have my eyes everywhere around Aurora. Valentina is doing a good job by watching her, so we have nothing to worry about," Stefano says.
Oh, so Valentina is the one watching me? Perhaps could she be watching me right now?
I pause to look around but I do not see Valentina anywhere around.
"You have nothing to worry about? I have a lot to worry about Stefano. You know how weary I am of strangers," Lorenzo says.
"You are just being paranoid, Lorenzo. Allow me to do my thing here," Stefano says.
I hear shuffling objects; I am about to turn around and leave the moment I do not hear them speak again until Lorenzo suddenly asks a question that causes me to freeze abruptly in my steps and listen closely.
"Quick question Stefano, are you going to tell me why you married her in the first place? I mean it is definitely not for revenge, is it?" Lorenzo asks.
Revenge?
"No, actually I am doing her a huge favor by protecting her from Marco," Stefano says.
Marco? Why is he protecting me from my own father?
