Chapter IV

“I still don’t understand why I have to be the one to do this.” Kay whispered glancing at Doodle who was beside her. Doodle rolled her eyes. “Because, you can slow down time long enough for me to get inside without the outside cameras picking me up.” She said looking at the green haired woman. She understood that Kay was nervous since this was her first bit mission outside of a general fight. And there was no room for error. They had to get inside without being seen since they were all well known and highly wanted criminals. So far their fake IDs had worked to get them inside the walls of the Middle Class. They were lucky when it came to this and It wouldn’t be a problem if this wasn’t located in the Middle class section of town and there were guards standing outside of each door. Kay frowned, understanding that she was needed for this and she couldn’t mess up. “Alright, once I touch you, you’ll have about twenty seconds to get form here to inside the building.” Doodle looked over her shoulder at her friend and scoffed. Twenty seconds was not a long time at all for a thirty yard dash from their hiding point behind the statue that sat outside the building to inside the doors. “Think you’ve got this?” Kay asked wondering what was going through the blue eyed woman’s mind. Doodle shook her head and looked down at the shorter woman. “No, but it’s what we’ve got to work with so it’s gotta work.” She told her. That was one thing that Kay always did like about her friend – she was always optimistic even in moments when it seemed like they were going to die. “Alright, here we go.” Kay said opening up her pocket watch and winding it back before she pressed her thumb down onto the button causing time to slow. Earlier That Day – “So, from what I was able to figure out last night is there are cameras all outside of the building, but there aren’t any inside the lobby. It seems like they’re focused on keeping people from getting inside more than they are about someone whose already inside – at least for the lobby.” Judith said as she turned her computer around to show the blue prints that she managed to find through a hacked firewall from last night. “Guards?” CJ asked from the head of the table. Everyone was there for this meeting that was extremely important. They were going to break into the building where the mystery man’s P.O. box was held to see if they couldn’t get both a layout of the area and find the man. Since he worked there in the upper levels of the building – from what they guessed – he’d stop by his mailbox and check it before heading into work. From there someone would follow him for as far as they could figuring out what floor his office was on. “All on the outside. Trust me when I say they don’t want anyone getting inside without them knowing.” Judith explained. Code looked at the blueprints of the building from her spot toward the head of the table. “So, how do we get inside without being seen? Kay can slow time but that’s only for so long. How are we suppose to get someone inside?” “Is it possible that there’s somewhere close to the doors? Somewhere where we can station Kay and another girl? Have the other girl run inside while the time is slowed?” Doodle asked throwing her ideas out onto the table. CJ glanced at her thinking for a moment. She looked down at Judith waiting for her to reply with some type of answer to that question. “There’s a monument out front but it’s about thirty yards from the front door.” “That’s not nearly close enough for twenty seconds.” Kay said knowing that there wasn’t really anyone here that could print that fast through the front doors in that amount of time. The room fell silent for a moment, each woman looked at the other as someone tried to come up with an idea. Finally CJ spoke up. “Doodle, if you can use that move with your powers to shoot yourself toward the door that would give you more than enough time to get inside.” She told the woman causing her to look wide-eyed. Pointing to herself she wasn’t so sure about this at all. “You want me to use my weapon in a highly populated area, while time is slowed, to launch myself thirty yards across the way to get inside a heavily guarded building?” She asked not sure if that’s what her boss meant or not. And then CJ nodded. Of course that’s what she meant. Rolling her eyes Doodle shook her head, she didn’t like this plan at all. “You’ll move fast enough to get inside while having time to return your weapon to normal. You’re the only one who has the skill set to get this done.” She told the woman whom she knew was reluctant to do this job. “You’ve got to be the one to do it.” She added in a stern voice. It needed to be done and it was true, she was the only one fast enough to do it thanks to the little move she had made up with her weapon. “Fine, but if I slice off the head of some poor asshole, I’m blaming you.” She said agreeing to the idea even though she didn’t agree with it. “That’s a chance I’m willing to take.” Present Time – Doodle felt the touch on her shoulder and she pulled out her switch blade. Tossing it up in the air after a spin around her hand the blade transformed into the large scythe. Running forward two steps, she flipped the weapon to where the blade and end of the gun was facing the ground. Stepping on the inside of the blade with her foot, her finger pulled the trigger which fired the gun causing her to zoom across the ground. Firing several time she flew through the air careful to avoid the slowly moving people that blocked her path. Reaching the doors she stepped off her scythe quickly and ducked inside transforming it back to the small switch blade which she stuffed into her pocket. She had made it inside right as the time returned to normal. A sigh of relief slipped past her parted lips as she caught her breath. She was so sure that the plan wouldn’t have ended up working and yet here she was inside now. ‘Alright now I just have to figure out where the guy is going to come from and – ‘ She thought to herself as she walked through the very large and open lobby as she spotted him from across the way. The mail boxes were lined up along a cream colored granted wall. The floors were also the same beautiful color. The whole building was comprised of windows that stretched all the way to the top floor. A large circular staircase sat in the middle of the building that went up to the very top of where it was visible. Apart from the way the building looked, no one would ever guess that this was an office building as it looked more like a hotel. Seeing her target, Doodle started walking over in a disguise that she was made to wear, a hat to color her bright red hair and a coat to cover her body. She got as close as she could to him, stopping at the end of the mail boxes and glancing over at him. She got a good look at his face. His hair was black and slicked back. He had high cheekbones that seemed sharp enough to cut though paper. He was tall, much taller than herself which probably put him well into the six foot three and taller. He was skinny too, but it was a muscular looking type of skinny. Not to mention he was dressed nicely and she could smell his cologne from where she was standing. “Morning Dan!” A fatter man said approaching the man and slapping him on the back of the shoulder. “Rodney. Good morning.” The man that was now know as Dan spoke. This peaked her interest hearing that he had a British accent. That was most certainly something that she hadn’t expected to hear this morning. It was rare to hear anyone that was left from that part of the old world. “Did ya get those files filled for Monday?” Rodney asked as he checked his mail box just as Dan was shutting his. Doodle kept a close watch out of the corner of her eyes trying to see if she could get a last name on any of the letters, but she was too far away to be able to read them. “Completed last night.” “Ah! Late night in the office again Daniel? You really need you a woman to go home to at night!” So the man’s full name was Daniel, not just Dan. She waited till Dan moved away from the other man, listening into their conversation. Apparently Dan was single and not interested in finding a woman anytime soon. After the two of them parted ways, she waited a second before she started to follow him. He walked up the stairs to the second level of the building where the elevators were located. Walking up a few steps behind him, she watched as he pushed the upper level button. She stood back and off to the side as he waited on the elevator. Once the doors open he was one of two people inside. Once the doors closed she watched and waited to see what floor the elevator was coming to a stop on – which were floors 13 and 45. It had to be one of those two floors that he got off on but she wasn’t sure which one it was. Figuring she had enough information to help go on she decided that it was time to get the hell out of here. Turning around she walked back down the stairs and out the front door not having to worry about the cameras with her back to them now. She walked away slowly from the building and down the street to the rally point where she was picked up by Kay and the two of them headed back to the hideout so she could give the information she had found to everyone else. At The Hideout - “His name is Daniel, goes by Dan sometimes. He works either on floor 13 or 45 I’m not sure which one.” Doodle explained to the group. CJ frowned deeply as she leaned forward in her chair. “What do you mean floor 13 or 45 which one is it?” She questioned. Doodle shook her head. “I told you there was someone else inside with him when he went to go up. I’m not sure.” “She did the best she could with what she was given CJ.” Code said speaking up to come to Doodle’s defense. CJ huffed and shook her head. They had a lot riding on this mission and they couldn’t throw all of it away on a gamble. There was no way they were doing anything until they found out for sure which floor it was he worked on. “You’re going back tomorrow and if you have to ride the God damn elevator to figure out what floor he works on then that’s what you’ll do!” “But CJ all the elevators have cameras, she won’t be able to get inside without being seen.” Judith tried to explain but CJ just seemed to not be having it. She shook her head and pointed toward Doodle. “Is that understood?” “Yeah, transparently.” Doodle scoffed back causing CJ to glare at her. She didn’t like the plan the first time and she most certainly didn’t like it the second time around. It put her in a lot of danger being alone in a building with guards around every corner and her face being one of the eight on every television screen come 6pm each night. “Boxx and Red how are our fireworks coming along?” CJ asked the two of them. “Delightful! It’s gonna be a bang!” Boxx laughed covering the part of her left face that had been burnt and scared in an accident involving explosives she and her sister had made. Kay watched Boxx, so sure that she had lost part of her mind in the accident as well after going deaf. “Right, we’ll be needing those in a few nights from now. Make sure they’re ready.” CJ said causing Boxx to laugh a bit again and nod excited to be able to have another explosive set off in some important building. “Alright, that’s all for now. We’ll meet back here tomorrow morning at four o’clock for the two of you to do this all over again.” CJ said pointing at both Doodle and Kay. “And you will find out the level he works on.” “Yeah, yeah I got it.” She said dryly in reply to CJ. The woman nodded before she banged her hand down on the table and everyone went their separate ways. The next morning it was the same thing. Doodle was to get inside and figure out what floor the man Daniel was going to be going up to for work. Her and Kay had used the same move as yesterday to get inside. Doodle was hanging around by the P.O boxes once again waiting for the man to show up. The longer she waited the more something didn’t feel right to her. She couldn’t place her finger on it but something was wrong. The man wasn’t here and everywhere she looked she couldn’t find him. Biting her bottom lip, Doodle was about to abort the mission. Something inside her body was screaming for her to get out of the building. She didn’t know if it was just her nerves or what but she thought she was going to go into a panic attack. That was until she seen the man walking in through the front doors. She turned her back to him so as to not be seen. She seen out of the corner of her eye he checked his mail box and then headed up the stairs. She followed him just like last time as she walked up the stairwell and waited behind him at the elevator. “Worst part of the day.” He spoke up. She didn’t say anything figuring that he was talking to someone else. It wasn’t until he turned and looked down at her did she know that it was her he was trying to talk to.
