Chapter 1
Arielle
I looked across the table at my mate and smiled.
For a moment, I simply watched him.
Joss was completely absorbed in his coffee, blissfully unaware that I was studying every detail of him. The familiar curve of his smile. The way his dark hair fell across his forehead. The relaxed confidence in the way he carried himself.
My heart filled with warmth as I continued to study him.
Four years. That was how long we had been together leading this pack.
Four perfect years.
I silently thanked the Moon Goddess for bringing him into my life. She had gotten it right when she gave me Joss as my fated mate.
He was everything I could have ever wanted in a mate.
He was strong, handsome, loving and, most importantly, he was mine.
As though he could feel my eyes on him, Joss looked up.
A slow smile spread across his face when he caught me watching him.
“What are you grinning about?” he asked, his voice carrying the teasing tone I loved so much.
“Nothing," I replied.
I gave him a casual shrug, hoping to hide just how ridiculously happy I felt.
Joss narrowed his eyes playfully.
“Right.”
I laughed softly.
He shook his head before taking the last sip of his coffee. Then he stood, carrying his empty mug to the kitchen sink.
“Okay, I have to get going.”
He turned to face me.
“I’ve got a meeting with another pack this morning, and then I need to speak with Sam and Tori about the arrangements for the pack party.”
He crossed the room and leaned down, pressing a gentle kiss against my temple.
“Have a good day, my love.”
“You too.”
I watched him walk away.
A moment later, the front door closed.
And just like that, the house fell silent.
I sat there for a moment, staring at the door.
Then I looked around our home.
Everything was beautiful.
Expensive furniture filled the rooms, carefully chosen decorations sat exactly where they belonged, and sunlight streamed through the large windows, making everything seem almost dreamlike.
This was my life.
My perfect life.
For the past four years, everything had been perfect.
Joss was the Alpha I had always dreamed of.
Our pack was strong and prosperous. Our members lived peacefully, everyone had their place, and our warriors were some of the best trained in the region.
There were no major conflicts.
No threats.
No reason to fear the future.
I had a loving mate, a beautiful home and a pack I was proud to call my own.
I honestly couldn’t have asked for more.
As far as I was concerned, the Moon Goddess had blessed me beyond anything I deserved.
I had everything.
I had my mate.
I had my home.
I had my pack.
I had the perfect life.
At least, that’s what I believed.
Because sometimes, the most dangerous lies are the ones we tell ourselves.
And I had no idea that the perfect life I had spent four years building was about to come crashing down around me.
______
I finished getting ready and made my way toward the main pack house.
Joss had asked me to help with the preparations for the upcoming party, and if he wanted an extravagant celebration, I was more than happy to make it happen.
I had barely reached the pack house when I ran into Tori, the Beta’s mate.
“Arielle!” she called with a bright smile. “How are things?”
I smiled back.
“Oh, you know. Another beautiful day in paradise.”
Tori laughed.
“Yes, it certainly is. We are very fortunate here, aren’t we?”
“We sure are.”
I believed those words completely.
At the time, I had no reason not to.
We walked into the pack house together before going our separate ways.
I headed straight for Joss’s office.
I didn’t bother knocking.
I opened the door and stepped inside.
Joss was sitting behind his desk, surrounded by paperwork.
The moment he saw me, his expression softened.
“What are you doing here, my love?”
“I came to help you plan the party you’re throwing for the pack.”
His smile widened.
“Well, I’m glad to hear that. I could definitely use your flair and skills when it comes to party planning.”
I laughed.
“Whatever help you need, you’ve got it. You know that.”
“That’s what I like to hear.”
He picked up another document and glanced over it before looking back at me.
“And remember—money is no object.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“Are you sure you want to say that to me?”
Joss chuckled.
“Absolutely.”
He leaned back in his chair.
“Make it spectacular. I want this to be a party no one in the pack ever forgets.”
I smiled.
“Oh, they won’t.”
Joss returned to his paperwork, seemingly satisfied that the arrangements were in capable hands.
I watched him for a moment.
Then I turned toward the door, already planning everything in my head.
If Joss wanted extravagant…
Then extravagant was exactly what he was going to get.
I had no idea that this party would become the beginning of the end.
And that before the night was over, I would discover that my perfect life had never been as perfect as I thought.
