The call of the sea
The winds howled against the rocky cliffs, carrying with it the salty scent of the endless ocean. Prince Jareth stood at the edge of the island, staring out into the vast expanse. His ship had been wrecked in the violent storm, and now he was stranded on this isolated isle, waiting for either rescue or death. Days had passed, and the chances of survival seemed slim. But something... something tugged at him, as if the sea itself were calling his name. It was on the fourth night, with the stars burning brightly overhead and the soft crash of waves below, that he saw him. Out of the depths, a figure emerged, shimmering with an ethereal glow. The merman’s long, flowing hair cascaded like liquid silver, his scales glistening under the moonlight. His eyes—deep and luminous—locked onto Jareth’s, and in that moment, the prince felt as though the entire world fell away. "Who are you?" Jareth's voice trembled, though he was not afraid. The beauty of the creature before him was almost overwhelming. The merman smiled, a soft, inviting curve of his lips that seemed to hold a secret. "I am Beryndor," he said, his voice like the sound of distant waves. "And you are lost, Prince Jareth." Jareth swallowed, his heart racing. "How do you know my name?" "I know many things," Beryndor replied, his gaze never leaving Jareth's. "The sea speaks to me. It carries stories of those who wander too far, those who seek something... more." Jareth’s chest tightened, a strange pull in his heart. "I don’t know what you mean... I’m stranded here. I was shipwrecked." "You’re not just stranded," Beryndor said, his voice soft and hypnotic. "You are at the mercy of the ocean, and there is no escape." "I... I don’t fear death," Jareth confessed, his voice low and steady despite the anxiety gnawing at him. "But I fear the unknown. And you... you are part of it." Beryndor’s smile deepened, his eyes sparkling with ancient wisdom. "You seek answers, Prince Jareth. But in seeking them, you come closer to the truth of the sea. The truth of what I am." Jareth stepped closer to the water’s edge, drawn in by the merman’s presence, the strange allure that seemed to pull at the very core of his being. "What are you?" he asked again, his voice barely above a whisper. "I am a creature of the deep," Beryndor said, swimming gracefully closer, his tail flicking through the water with a hypnotic rhythm. "And for a merman to live... we must take a life. A man’s life." Jareth felt his blood run cold, but his heart did not race with fear. Instead, a curious acceptance filled him. He had heard the legends—how merfolk were said to drown sailors, to claim their souls to sustain themselves—but something about Beryndor was different. Something made him trust the creature in front of him. "And what if... what if I gave you my life?" Jareth asked, his voice barely audible, yet filled with an unspoken resolve. "What if I offered myself to you?" Beryndor’s eyes widened, and for a moment, the ocean seemed to hold its breath. "You would do that?" His voice was filled with surprise, but there was also something else—something like wonder, or perhaps even longing. "I’ve seen your beauty, Beryndor," Jareth said, his gaze never leaving the merman’s. "And I know what you need to survive. I would give my life to save you, if it means you can live on." The merman swam closer still, his skin shimmering under the pale light of the moon. "You would sacrifice yourself for me?" His voice was tinged with awe. Jareth nodded, feeling his resolve firm within him. "I would. I am a prince, yes. But I am also a man. And as a man, I know that some sacrifices are worth making—especially when it means saving something as beautiful as you." Beryndor hesitated, his eyes searching Jareth’s face, as though trying to understand the depth of the prince’s words. The water swirled around them, whispering secrets of the deep, but it was Jareth’s heart that spoke louder than any tide. "You are willing to die," Beryndor murmured, "for a creature of the sea?" "I am willing to die," Jareth said, stepping even closer to the edge of the water. "For you." A long silence stretched between them, the only sound the gentle lapping of the waves. And then, Beryndor reached out a hand, his fingers brushing Jareth’s cheek with a gentleness that belied his nature. "Then come with me," Beryndor whispered, his voice tender and filled with a strange, sad longing. "Let us go to the depths together." Jareth, without hesitation, stepped into the water, surrendering himself to the pull of the sea. He knew what was to come—the drowning, the fading of breath—but in that moment, he did not fear. For he was giving his life not just for the merman, but for the promise of something greater: a connection that transcended the boundaries of their worlds. As Beryndor wrapped his arms around him and they sank together into the dark embrace of the ocean, Jareth’s last thought was of the beauty he had seen—the beauty of the merman, of the sea, and of the love that had bound them together in a way that no human or merman could ever explain. END.
