Chapter 24
Etan kept to the alley behind the cinderblock hospital, walking between it and a bunch of red and brown brick buildings. Sandy’s advice was accurate and welcome. The late afternoon was usually a fairly busy time. Today no one was out, at least not that he could see.
The town jail had seen surprisingly little use since the end of the old world. The brick building Etan remembered from his childhood had been replaced with a modern blue vinyl-sided version years before, jarring against the rest of the original structures on the edge of town.
Etan had only been inside the new building a couple of times, back at the beginning of the end. Random drunken brawls as news filtered in of how bad things were going to get died down within a few months.
