Alex heard a soft click near his right ear, the same noise Sandy had somehow used to block his pain and send him into oblivion. The sedation withdrew as quickly as it had come, the fog clearing in seconds. His senses shifted into clarity. The hard table under his shoulders, the lingering sting of antiseptic in the room, all too mundane to be part of some kind of hallucination. Alex knew Sandy was worried about whatever she needed to do to him, but he couldn’t remember why just yet. Though he couldn’t feel the painfully bright lights against his eyelids, Alex still squinted as he opened his eyes.
