Chapter 1: The Price of Oxygen
The relentless New York rain slammed against the glass doors of St. Jude’s Hospital, but Ava barely felt the chill. Walking into the bright, sterile lobby, she felt lighter than she had in months. In her arms, she cradled a massive cluster of fresh orchids, their bright petals contrasting beautifully against her simple denim jacket. Her shoulders ached under the weight of her heavy canvas bag, but the massive smile on her face didn't fade for a second. For the first time in two agonizing months, she wasn't walking in here to sit by a silent, machine-assisted bed. As she navigated the familiar, maze-like corridors toward the intensive care wing, she noticed several passing nurses and visitors staring at her. Ava casually brushed a hand against her cheek, wondering if she had corporate floor grease or smudged makeup on her skin. Finding nothing, she just shrugged it off. She was used to random stares; her vibrant, tumbling mass of natural crimson hair and striking features always drew attention, whether she wanted it or not. Just outside the ward, a familiar figure in a white lab coat stepped into her path. "Doctor Emma!" Ava greeted her, her melodic voice practically buzzing with nervous excitement. "It's a beautiful night, isn't it?" Emma broke into a warm, relieved smile, clapping a hand gently onto Ava’s shoulder. "It certainly is. Wilson is fully alert and asking for you. I assume you're dying to see him?" Ava felt a sudden rush of heat flood her cheeks. Bashfully, she tucked a stray red curl behind her ear, her freckled face turning a deep shade of pink as she gave a quiet, grateful nod. "I still don't know how a twenty-one-year-old orphan managed to clear a fifty-thousand-dollars ICU deficit in less than forty-eight hours," Emma murmured, her eyes softening with genuine admiration. "But whatever you did, it saved his life. You really would cross oceans for him, wouldn't you?" Ava’s eyes brimmed with sudden, emotional tears. She nodded silently. Wilson was her entire world. When she was completely alone, struggling to survive in the city, he was the only person who had looked at her with genuine kindness. He had given her a place to stay, shielded her from the harsh city, and loved her for exactly who she was—never treating her like a prize or an object. When his illness struck, she didn't hesitate. She had worked herself to the bone, taking every brutal late-night shift available just to keep his heart beating. Taking a deep, steadying breath, Ava turned the brass doorknob and pushed the heavy hospital door open. There he was. Sitting upright against the pillow, a thin IV line running into his pale wrist, was Wilson Adams. The moment his deep, oceanic eyes locked onto her figure, his face transformed. "Babe," he breathed, his voice rough from disuse. That single word shattered her restraint. The orchids slipped from her hands, scattering across the linoleum floor as she sprinted across the room. Disregarding the medical equipment, she threw her arms around his neck, burying her face directly into the warm crook of his shoulder as a torrent of joyful tears escaped her eyes. "You absolute liar," she sobbed happily, squeezing him tightly as his arms wrapped securely around his waist. "You swore you'd never leave me alone. Do you have any idea how terrified I was?" "I'm sorry, babe," Wilson whispered into her ear, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against her crown. "I'm right here. Mr. Adams is back." ★ ★ A little while later, the emotional storm had settled. Ava sat on the edge of the mattress, happily watching him tear into a takeout burger she had brought along. She had offered to feed him, but Wilson had insisted he was strong enough, laughing at how fiercely protective she was being. But as he swallowed his last bite, his playful demeanor shifted into something far more serious. He set the wrapper down and gently took her hand, his thumb tracing the rough skin of her knuckles. "Ava... the billing department said our entire medical debt was settled in cash," Wilson said quietly, his blue eyes searching her face. "Where did you get that kind of money? Fifty thousand dollars doesn't just appear overnight." Ava froze, her cute smile instantly faltering. She tried to pull her hand back, but Wilson’s grip tightened slightly, his gaze unwavering. "Sweetheart, look at me," he murmured, leaning forward to press a soft, distracting kiss against her lips. Ava melted into the touch, her arms instinctively wrapping around his neck as the kiss deepened into something passionate and desperate. But when he finally pulled back, his eyes were just as demanding as before. "Don't lie to me. What did you do?" Ava pouted, realizing her usual distraction tactic had failed. "You have to promise you won't freak out first." "I promise. Just tell me." Ava sighed, shifting slightly on the bed. "I took a high-paying late shift at Ashford Global, that massive corporate empire downtown. A few nights ago, I was assigned to clean the restricted executive penthouse floor. It belongs to Grayson Ashford." Wilson’s entire body went rigid. "The billionaire CEO? The guy who completely dismantles international conglomerates for breakfast?" "Yes, him," Ava rushed out, flicking his forehead playfully to break his sudden tension. "Anyway, the floor was totally deserted. While I was vacuuming the suite, it collided with something heavy near the desk. It was a flawless, massive ruby pendant on a platinum chain. It was just lying there, Wilson. I knew the hospital was going to pull your life support by Friday, so... I put it in my pocket. I sold it to an underground broker in the Diamond District yesterday morning." Wilson’s face drained of color, turning a sickening shade of white. "Ava... you stole from Grayson Ashford?" "I didn't steal it, I found it!" she defended fiercely. "And it saved your life!" "Oh, Ava... what have you done?" ★ ★ The ride back to their shared apartment was agonizingly quiet. Ava rested her forehead against the cool glass of the taxi window, her mind replaying Wilson's panicked reaction. He had completely lost it, demanding that she go back to the apartment, pack their entire lives into two suitcases, and bring them straight back to the hospital so they could flee the state. He's just overreacting, she thought defensively, pouting as she watched the rain-slicked New York streets blur past. Grayson Ashford is a billionaire. He probably hasn't even noticed a single missing necklace yet. Absently, she glanced at the rearview mirror. The taxi driver was watching her intently. He was dressed entirely in a perfectly tailored, midnight-black suit with matching leather driving gloves—an incredibly odd and expensive uniform for a standard yellow cab driver. "Looks like a bad one up ahead," the driver remarked, his voice smooth and entirely devoid of warmth. "What do you mean?" Ava asked, frowning. The driver simply pointed through the windshield. Ava’s heart stopped. There's an accident ahead, I don't think we can pass through this road, the driver whispered. She needed to get back to Wilson in time. "Take me back to the hospital!" she gasped, "Hurry!" The driver didn't answer. He simply locked the doors with a sharp electronic click and pulled away from the curb. Ava reached into her handbag to grab her phone, but as she did, a strange, sweet, chemical odor filled the backseat. Her head instantly began to spin, a heavy, suffocating wave of dizziness crashing over her brain. Her vision blurred into darkness. The smartphone slipped from her limp fingers, clattering onto the floorboards as her eyes clamped shut, throwing her into absolute unconsciousness. ★ ★ When Ava’s eyes finally fluttered open, she was greeted by total disorientation. She wasn't in a basement or a dungeon. She was lying on a cold marble floor inside a massive, ultra-modern room surrounded by towering walls of glass. The morning sun was pouring through the windows, illuminating a space that smelled heavily of expensive cedarwood and polished steel. She groaned, forcing herself to her knees. The electronic doors to the suite required biometric authorization. She was completely trapped. Why am I here? her mind screamed in a panic. The fire... the cab driver... Suddenly, the heavy mahogany double doors at the far end of the room chimed, sliding open with a smooth, mechanical hiss. Heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed across the polished floor. Ava scrambled backward, her back hitting the glass wall as a towering figure stepped into the morning light. Before she could even demand answers, a strong, unyielding hand clad in a black leather glove gripped her chin, forcing her face forcefully upward. "Don't damage the asset just yet, Walker," a smooth, chilling calm voice resonated from the shadows. Ava gasped, her dark eyes locking onto the man standing directly above her. He was breathtakingly handsome, wearing a pristine, custom-tailored charcoal suit that radiated absolute authority. But it was his eyes that terrified her—they were a piercing, icy, silver-tinted green, completely devoid of human emotion. Grayson Ashford looked down at her like a predator inspecting a trapped insect. "My pendant," the billionaire whispered, his voice dangerously quiet, yet vibrating with an absolute power that made the entire room feel like ice. He tilted her chin higher, his piercing eyes cutting straight through her soul. "Where is my damn pendant, Ava? Tell me exactly who you sold it to, or I will ensure I burn your little world to the ground.”
