The Night They Came for Her
Rain hammered the city that night, turning the streets into rivers of reflected light. Elena Cross ran without looking back. Her lungs burned. Her shoes slipped against the wet pavement, but she kept moving. One hand gripped a small black hard drive beneath her jacket. The other held her phone, its screen flashing with missed calls from numbers she didn't recognize. Behind her, an engine roared. Then came the sound she feared most. Gunfire. A bullet struck the brick wall beside her head. Elena ducked and ran faster. She had spent six months investigating financial records connected to several powerful companies. What she discovered inside one of them had changed everything. Black Viper wasn't just a criminal organization. It had people inside the police, courts, government offices, banks, and private corporations. And now they knew she had the evidence. Elena reached a narrow street and stopped before an old house. She knocked three times. The door opened immediately. Marcus Hale pulled her inside. "You're late." "They found me." Marcus locked the door. "Who?" "You know who." His expression hardened. Black Viper. Marcus had once worked with people connected to the organization. He understood exactly what Elena was running from. "Show me what you took." Elena pulled out the hard drive. Marcus connected it to an old computer. Thousands of files appeared. Names. Bank transfers. Photographs. Encrypted communications. Locations. Judges. Prosecutors. Police officers. Politicians. Businessmen. Marcus stared at the screen. "This is bigger than Black Viper." "I know." Before he could answer, headlights swept across the windows. Marcus froze. "They're here." The front door exploded inward. Gunmen stormed the house. Marcus grabbed Elena's arm. "Go!" "What about you?" "There's a passage beneath the floor." He pushed a wooden cabinet aside, revealing a narrow opening. Elena hesitated. Marcus shoved the hard drive back into her hand. "If they get this, thousands of people disappear." A gunshot echoed through the house. Marcus looked at her. "Run, Elena." She crawled into the passage. Behind her, gunfire erupted. She heard Marcus shout. Then silence. Elena emerged several minutes later into an alley behind the house. She ran until she reached an old motorcycle repair shop. The lights were still on. She pushed through the door. A man looked up from beneath a motorcycle. His eyes narrowed. "Who are you?" "Kael Morgan?" The man's expression changed. "Who sent you?" "No one. Marcus Hale sent me." Kael stood immediately. "Where is Marcus?" "Dead. Or close to it." Kael stared at the hard drive. Then at Elena. "Black Viper?" She nodded. Kael swore under his breath. "We have to leave." They barely made it outside before a black motorcycle roared into the street. Kael tossed Elena a helmet. "Get on." They sped away through the rain. Minutes later, an old gray sedan appeared behind them. The chase began. A window opened. Gunfire ripped through the night. Kael swerved between cars as bullets struck the motorcycle. "Hold on!" They escaped into an industrial district, but the sedan followed. Kael suddenly turned into an abandoned warehouse. The motorcycle crashed through a half-open gate. Elena fell hard but managed to roll behind a concrete pillar. Men rushed inside. Kael fought the first attacker with brutal efficiency. Then another man stepped from the darkness. Adrian Vale. He looked at Kael with something colder than hatred. "You disappeared for two years." Kael slowly stood. "I left Black Viper." "You abandoned your brothers." "I abandoned what it became." Adrian smiled bitterly. "You always needed to believe you were better than us." "No. I just refused to become you." Adrian raised his weapon. Elena fired first. The bullet struck his shoulder. Adrian staggered. Kael grabbed Elena. "Move!" They escaped through a rear entrance and disappeared into the darkness. For several minutes, neither spoke. Finally, Elena asked, "Who was he?" "My former partner." "And Black Viper?" Kael kept his eyes on the road. "I helped create it." Elena stared at him. "It was supposed to expose corruption. People inside the system who couldn't be reached by ordinary law. We collected evidence. Protected witnesses. Took down people who thought they were untouchable." "What happened?" "Power happened." Kael's voice became quieter. "Black Viper stopped exposing monsters. It started deciding who deserved to live." He told her about Thomas Reed, a whistleblower who had possessed evidence against several officials. Kael had been ordered to eliminate him. He refused. Black Viper killed Thomas anyway. His wife. His children. Everyone. "I thought refusing would save them," Kael said. "It didn't." Elena looked away. For the first time, she understood why Kael carried himself like a man who had been running from his own shadow. They reached an isolated safe house before dawn. Kael connected the hard drive to a secure computer. For several seconds, nothing happened. Then a black screen appeared. PROJECT NIGHTFALL Elena leaned closer. Files opened automatically. Maps. Government facilities. Communication networks. Emergency systems. Then she saw something that made her blood run cold. Her own name. ELENA CROSS There were photographs of her. Outside her apartment. At work. Walking through the city. Some had been taken months earlier. "They've been watching me," she whispered. Kael said nothing. Another folder opened. CROSS, VICTOR Elena stopped breathing. A photograph appeared on the screen. She was twelve years old. Standing beside her father. Victor Cross. The man she had believed dead for twenty years. "No..." She touched the screen. Her memories returned. Her father coming home late one night, soaked by rain and visibly frightened. He had hugged her for a long time. Then he had given her a small silver pendant. "Whatever happens, never trust anyone who tells you I abandoned you." The next morning, he was gone. Her mother said he had died in an accident. There had never been a body. Elena had spent twenty years believing he was dead. Kael finally spoke. "Your father was investigating Orion." "Who is Orion?" "The organization above Black Viper." Elena turned toward him. "You knew him." Kael didn't answer. "You knew my father?" "Yes." Anger flashed across Elena's face. "You knew him all this time?" "I didn't know where he was." "But you knew he was alive?" Kael looked away. Before Elena could demand an answer, the computer screen changed. A recorded message appeared. A distorted voice filled the room. "Project Nightfall begins in seventy-two hours." Elena and Kael exchanged a glance. "At midnight on the third day, communication networks will be compromised. Emergency systems will fail. Financial systems will be seized." The screen showed maps of major cities. "Nightfall is not an attack." A pause. "It is a takeover." Elena felt the room suddenly become smaller. "Black Viper is only one piece of the machine." The voice continued. "Orion has people inside police departments, courts, governments, corporations, and intelligence agencies." The recording ended. A final sentence appeared on the screen. FIND THE LAST SHADOW. Then every light in the safe house went out. Kael immediately grabbed his weapon. "Stay behind me." The first explosion tore through the back wall. They were thrown across the room. Smoke filled the building. "Move!" Kael pulled Elena through a side door. Bullets tore through the windows. They ran into the forest as the safe house erupted behind them. For several minutes they kept moving until they reached a narrow road. Elena stopped. "You owe me answers." Kael turned. "Your father saved my life once." She stared at him. "He told me something I'll never forget." "What?" "Nobody gets left behind." Elena's eyes hardened. "Then why did he leave me?" Kael had no answer. A phone suddenly vibrated in his pocket. There was a single message. Coordinates. Nothing else. They followed them to an abandoned harbor. A warehouse stood beside the dark water. Before they reached it, headlights appeared. Dozens of armed men surrounded them. Adrian stepped forward. His wounded shoulder was bandaged. "You shouldn't have come here." Kael raised his weapon. Adrian looked at Elena. "Your father is inside." Elena's heart stopped. "He's alive?" Adrian said nothing. A massive warehouse door slowly opened. Darkness waited beyond it. Then a man's voice echoed from inside. "Elena." She froze. She knew that voice. She had heard it in childhood dreams for twenty years. "Come inside." Kael grabbed her arm. "Don't." Elena looked at him. "That's my father." "That's exactly why you shouldn't trust what you're hearing." But Elena pulled free. She stepped toward the warehouse. One step. Then another. Inside, the darkness seemed endless. The door suddenly slammed shut behind her. And somewhere in the shadows, Victor Cross whispered: "You should never have found the Nightfall files."
