Chapter 1:CASCADED TUMOIL
“Help! Somebody, help!” Krystelle Ackermann’s desperate cries sliced through the sterile hospital corridors as she burst through the emergency room doors, clutching her son tightly. Her face, streaked with tears, was pale under the harsh fluorescent lights. Her son, Josiah, barely conscious and gasping for air, was a heartbreaking sight. “Help me, my son is dying, please!” Krystelle pleaded, her voice trembling. “Stay with me, Josiah, Mama's here. Stay with me, please.” She kissed his cheeks and forehead, her hands shaking as she held him close. The emergency room staff quickly mobilised. A nurse approached with a calm, practised demeanour. “Calm down, ma’am, we’ll do everything we can for him. He will be alright,” the nurse said soothingly. “Can you tell me what happened?” She urged softly while taking notes on her iPad. As her colleague laid Josiah on a stretcher and placed an oxygen mask over his face, Krystelle ran alongside them, her fingers brushing his hair and her lips kissing his hands. “My boy…” she whispered through her tears. “Ma’am, you can’t go past this point,” a nurse said, gently restraining her as she struggled to follow. “Please, he’s my son. I need to be with him. He needs his mother, wait…” Krystelle’s pleas grew frantic. “Calm down, ma’am,” the nurse said firmly. “He is in good hands. You need to tell me what happened, alright?” Krystelle, her voice trembling and broken by sobs, struggled to explain. “He… he started having another attack. He was fine earlier. I don’t know what’s happening.” The nurse nodded sympathetically, guiding her towards a waiting area. “We’re going to do everything we can to help him. Please, try to stay calm.” As Krystelle sank into a nearby chair, her body shaking with sobs, her mind raced with despair. “Why is this happening?” she lamented aloud. “What did I do to deserve this?” “Please, help me. He is all I have, he is all I have,” she screamed , tears streaming down her cheeks. She shuddered at the thought of losing her son. The nurse nodded sympathetically. “We’re going to take him into treatment now. We’ll try our best to stabilise him. Please take it easy on yourself; your son would not want to see you like this.” The nurse patted her shoulder as she headed toward the emergency room. Krystelle stood up pacing back and forth the corridor of the hospital , her body shaking with sobs. Her mind was a whirlwind of despair and confusion. “Why is this happening?” she lamented aloud. “What did I do to deserve this?” Collapsing into a nearby chair, as tears ran down her cheeks, lost in her grief, her phone rang. She fumbled to answer it, her hands shaking and her voice breaking as she spoke to her sister, Mia, who had been her best friend since their mother’s death. “Mia, I don’t know what to do. He’s so sick…” “I’m on my way. Hang in there, he will be fine,” Mia’s voice was determined and reassuring. “I’ll be there soon. Just hang in there, okay?” Minutes felt like hours, but eventually, Mia arrived. Her presence was a comforting balm to Krystelle’s frayed nerves. She rushed to Krystelle, pulling her into a tight hug. “I’m here,” Mia whispered, her voice a soothing anchor amidst the chaos. “We’ll get through this.” Mia offered a handkerchief. “Wipe your face. Josiah wouldn’t like seeing you like this,” she said, her own eyes misty as she tried to hold back tears. “Thank you, Mia,” Krystelle said, wiping her eyes and nose as she sniffed. As Mia comforted her, a nurse approached and gently touched Krystelle’s arm. “Ms. Ackermann, the doctor would like to speak with you in his office.” “Okay, right behind you,” Krystelle replied, her voice barely audible. “I can come with you if you want,” Mia offered. “Alright,” Krystelle nodded. Her heart pounded as she and Mia followed the nurse down the hallway. Her hands trembled, and she fought to steady her breathing as they entered the doctor’s office. Dr. Ellis, a middle-aged man with a kind but serious expression, looked up from his desk. “Ms. Ackermann, have a seat. Your son’s condition is critical.” He glanced at them, searching for the right words. “He needs urgent surgery or he won’t make it.” Krystelle’s breath caught in her throat. “Su… su… surgery? But the medication was working! What happened?” Dr. Ellis continued, “Ma’am, calm down. How many times did you go for his check-ups and appointments?” “I... I can’t really remember,” Krystelle admitted, her voice trembling. “You should have gone for the check-ups at least to monitor the disease. It spreads, and right now, we have no choice but to perform a lung transplant. We need to start looking for a donor and schedule the surgery within the next five days, or…” The doctor’s voice trailed off, his knowing look enough to convey the gravity of the situation. “How much will it cost?” Krystelle asked, her voice barely more than a whisper, tears rolling down her cheeks as she thought of her son’s pain and her inability to help him. Dr. Ellis hesitated, then replied, “The surgery will be very expensive. We’re talking tens of thousands of dollars.” “Doctor, please, I need a figure,” Krystelle pleaded. Dr. Ellis sighed, “$93,600, but we can round up to $10,000.” The words hit Krystelle like a physical blow. She felt her legs give way beneath her and sank into a nearby chair, her head spinning. The room blurred around her as she struggled to stay conscious. “Five days,” Dr. Ellis continued. “If we don’t proceed within that time frame, the chances of survival drop dramatically.” Krystelle’s blood ran cold. The weight of the news settled over her like a shroud. Five days. Her son’s life was on a ticking clock, and she was left with the crushing realisation that she might lose him. Her entire world seemed to collapse, the walls of the office closing in as her vision blurred with tears. “What?!” she screamed, her voice raw with anguish. “Five days?! How am I going to raise $10,000 in five days? This cannot be happening!” Her cries grew more frantic. “Lord, please take me instead!” She struggled to stay awake, her emotions overwhelming her. A loud thud echoed in the room. Dr. Ellis and Mia turned to see Krystelle collapse on the floor, having fainted from the shock. “Krystelle! Krystelle!” Mia’s voice was filled with panic. “Help! Somebody, help!”
