Chapter 1 — The Unexpected Proposal
Victoria Hayes had always believed that some doors were better left unopened.
At twenty-four, she had learned not to expect life to hand her anything for free. Everything she had, she had earned through patience, hard work, and a stubborn refusal to give up.
Her small apartment in Manhattan wasn't luxurious. The kitchen was barely large enough for two people, the living room had a secondhand sofa, and the view from her bedroom window was mostly another building.
But it was hers.
That mattered.
Victoria stood in front of her mirror that Friday evening, fastening a small silver earring into place. She had spent the entire day at the marketing firm where she worked as a junior account manager, and all she wanted was to take off her heels, order takeout, and forget about work until Monday.
Her phone suddenly rang.
She glanced at the screen.
Unknown number.
She almost ignored it.
Almost.
“Hello?”
“Is this Victoria Hayes?”
“Yes. Who's calling?”
“My name is Richard Cole. I'm the personal assistant to Alexander Blackwood.”
Victoria frowned.
She knew that name.
Everyone in New York knew it.
Alexander Blackwood was the thirty-one-year-old billionaire CEO of Blackwood Enterprises, one of the most influential investment companies in the country. His name appeared regularly in business magazines, but the man himself rarely appeared in public.
“What does Mr. Blackwood want with me?”
“I can't discuss that over the phone.”
Victoria's expression tightened.
“Then why are you calling?”
“He would like to meet with you tonight.”
“Tonight?”
“Yes.”
She laughed softly, thinking it was some kind of joke.
“I'm sorry, but I don't think that's possible.”
“Ms. Hayes, I strongly suggest that you reconsider.”
There was something about his tone that made her stop smiling.
“Where?”
“Blackwood Estate. Eight o'clock.”
The call ended before Victoria could ask another question.
She stared at her phone.
This was ridiculous.
She didn't know Alexander Blackwood.
She had never met him.
And she certainly couldn't understand why a billionaire would suddenly want to see her.
Yet, at seven forty-five that evening, Victoria found herself standing outside the enormous gates of Blackwood Estate.
The mansion looked like something from another world.
Tall iron gates opened slowly as her taxi approached. Beyond them stood a massive stone mansion surrounded by perfectly trimmed gardens and rows of elegant trees.
Victoria stepped out of the car and looked up.
“Okay,” she whispered. “Definitely not my world.”
A man in a black suit approached her.
“Ms. Hayes?”
“Yes.”
“Mr. Blackwood is expecting you.”
Victoria followed him inside.
The interior was even more impressive than the exterior. Marble floors stretched beneath enormous crystal chandeliers. Paintings decorated the walls, and everything looked expensive without appearing desperate to prove it.
Then she saw him.
Alexander Blackwood stood beside a tall window overlooking the gardens.
He was dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit, his dark hair neatly styled, his expression unreadable.
When he turned toward her, Victoria immediately understood why people described him as intimidating.
His eyes settled on hers.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Alexander walked toward her.
“Victoria Hayes.”
His voice was deep and controlled.
She straightened.
“Alexander Blackwood.”
He gestured toward a chair.
“Sit.”
Victoria raised an eyebrow.
“You could at least pretend to be polite.”
Something flickered in his eyes.
Almost amusement.
But it disappeared immediately.
“Sit, please.”
She sat.
Alexander placed a folder on the table between them.
“I have a proposition for you.”
Victoria looked at the folder.
“What kind?”
“A marriage.”
She blinked.
Then she laughed.
“You're serious?”
“Completely.”
Victoria stared at him as if he had lost his mind.
“You want me to marry you?”
“Yes.”
“You don't even know me.”
“I know enough.”
She pushed the folder back toward him.
“No.”
Alexander didn't move.
“You haven't heard the offer.”
“I don't need to.”
“You will receive five million dollars.”
Victoria's eyes widened.
For the first time, she understood that this wasn't a joke.
Still, she shook her head.
“Money doesn't make this normal.”
“No,” Alexander said calmly. “It makes it possible.”
Victoria stood.
“I think I'm leaving.”
“Your father.”
She froze.
Alexander continued.
“Daniel Hayes.”
Slowly, Victoria turned around.
“How do you know my father's name?”
Alexander's expression remained cold.
“Because your family has a connection to mine.”
Her heartbeat quickened.
“My father has nothing to do with you.”
“Are you certain?”
Victoria said nothing.
Alexander opened the folder.
Inside were several documents.
Photographs.
Financial records.
And an old newspaper clipping.
Victoria picked it up.
Her face went pale.
It was an article about her father from fifteen years ago.
Something she had never seen before.
“What is this?”
“The reason I chose you.”
Victoria looked at him.
“What happened fifteen years ago?”
Alexander's jaw tightened.
“My father died that year.”
She stared at him.
“And you think my father had something to do with it?”
“I don't think.”
He paused.
“I know.”
Victoria's hands trembled.
Alexander stepped closer.
“Your father disappeared from my family's life immediately afterward. He changed his name, moved away, and never spoke about the Blackwoods again.”
“That doesn't prove anything.”
“No.”
Alexander looked directly into her eyes.
“But I have spent years trying to find the truth.”
He picked up the marriage contract and placed it in front of her again.
“I need access to certain people in my family. People who would never speak honestly to me if they knew what I was investigating.”
Victoria stared at the contract.
“And marrying me gives you that access?”
“Yes.”
“And what do I get?”
“Five million dollars.”
She swallowed.
“And after one year?”
“The marriage ends.”
Victoria looked at him suspiciously.
“And we simply walk away?”
“That is the agreement.”
She looked down at the contract.
There were dozens of pages.
Rules.
Conditions.
Confidentiality clauses.
One year.
Five million dollars.
A secret marriage.
It sounded insane.
Yet something about the documents told her that Alexander wasn't giving her the entire story.
She looked up.
“What aren't you telling me?”
For the first time that night, Alexander's expression changed.
Something dark passed through his eyes.
Then he said quietly,
“If you marry me, someone will try to destroy you.”
Victoria's heart stopped.
“Who?”
Alexander didn't answer.
Instead, he pushed a pen toward her.
“That's your decision.”
Victoria stared at the pen.
She should walk away.
She knew that.
But then she remembered her father's face whenever she asked about the past.
The way he always became silent.
The way he had once told her never to trust the Blackwood family.
She had never understood why.
Until tonight.
Victoria slowly reached for the pen.
And as she prepared to sign, Alexander's phone rang.
He glanced at the screen.
His face immediately changed.
“What is it?” Victoria asked.
Alexander answered the call.
He listened for several seconds.
Then his eyes lifted toward her.
“She's here.”
Victoria frowned.
“Who?”
Alexander ended the call.
A strange silence filled the room.
Then he looked at Victoria and said four words that made her blood run cold.
“My fiancée just arrived.”
