Chapter 1: Surprise
(TW:Suicide)
Liah's POV
On the phone…
“How are you there Liah? Are you doing great in your school?” Maiandra asked on the other end of the phone.
I am going to surprise her by going back to our apartment which we considered as our home ever since my parents and her mom died.
I went to a different university from hers because Mom and Dad suggested that school when they were still alive, that I should try to study there since they offer advanced classes.
It is an hour and a half far from Maiandra's, so I decided to stay at the apartment I bought near the university.
I decided to go back because boredom was eating me more rather than the stress that our school activities are giving.
Plus, it is so boring to study without your family and friends by your side. And the only family and friends that is left to me is Maiandra and Xian.
“I’m doing great in here. How about you? How are things running around in there? Are you doing great?” I bombarded her with multiple questions at one but then heard a small and almost inaudible sniff from her.
Is she crying? Or she just has a cold, maybe?
“Hey, are you sick? Why are you sniffing?” I asked out of curiosity and worry.
“Ah. No, it’s nothing. I just caught a cold that is why I am sniffing.” I sighed in relief upon hearing her response.
I just told her that I will hang up the call and she should take some medicine to make her feel better and take a rest.
Maybe it’s better if I surprise her while she’s asleep. How epic would it be if I see her confused face?
I almost laughed out loud inside the bus because of my imaginations, womdering how her face will look later.
They might think that I’m crazy. That would be really embarrassing. HAHAHAHA.
After our conversation, I decided to just take a nap until the bus reaches its destination.
From what I see, the ride might be there within an hour.
---
I already looked at the time on my phone repeatedly but Xian is still not here.
Thirty minutes already passed.
Where is he? I’m already tired of standing.
“Liah!” just when I’m about to walk and look around for him, I heard someone shout my name causing me to stop whining to myself while complaining why Xian takes so long.
He ran towards my direction, waving his right hand for me to notice him.
“Sorry Liah, I’m late.” He said while scratching the back his head.
Xian is the best friend of Maiandra. Well, of course I'd say mine too but he's more like a brother to me.
He doesn’t attend the same school as Maiandra since his parents wanted him to study in a specific school like I do but it’s not a problem because the distance between their school are not far.
I’ve never seen such strong friendship like theirs. They were there for each other during tough and happy times.
He was there for her when her mother died and she was there for him whenever things are tight.
“Why didn’t you call your driver? Your car is better than us taking a cab.” he complained.
“I don’t want to. And I will not stay in that house. It’s big but it’s empty.” I whined back at him.
And one reason why I don’t want to go back and stay there is that it reminds me of my mother and father whenever I set a foot into that house.
It hurts me that that house where a lot of happy memories was created was now the cause of my greatest pain because of my mother and father’s death.
“You know what? Let’s go! I have to surprise Maiandra.” I exclaimed as I put one of my bags in his arms for him to carry.
“When do you plan to confess to her?” I asked him as I put my head on his shoulder.
We are now inside the taxi and we are about 30 minutes away from Maiandra’s place.
“I don’t know when but I think that we should keep it like this for the mean time.” he sighed heavily.
Is it really that hard? I mean, he is not confessing because that might ruin their friendship but what if she already met someone? Then he will regret it.
All I can do is my confusion that is bothering me.
Is it really that complicated? I don’t know. I haven’t experienced it yet.
“Don’t let it bother you, Liah. This is a matter that you should let me handle. I got this, okay?” Whatever it is, I hope it really goes well.
I’m rooting for you Xian!
After the 30-minute ride, we finally arrived at Maya’s (that’s what I usually call her) place.
I’m so excited to meet her again after four long months.
After we got down on the taxi, Xian opened the door using his spare key.
He has it because he stays here sometimes.
As we enter the house, you can hear nothing but silence. I’m sure that she is still asleep and I’m so excited to see and hug her again.
I went straight in front of her bedroom door and carefully opened the door knob to not wake her up but when I already opened her door widely, instead of me surprising her of my sudden arrival, it was her who surprised me by what I saw instead.
No! I can't believe it...
