Chapter EightSabrina Brooks dreamed of a time when she and Jon Aeppli first began realizing the possibilities in their breakthroughs while testing the limits of indentation. They developed a technique by which they measured both yield strength and ultimate tensile strength. They built a machine with a cylindrical flat diamond that could be driven into a test specimen at a controlled loading rate. Such a technique allowing for direct correlation of macro tensile properties was relatively unheard of. It gave them unprecedented YS/UTS mapping with which they could detect crucial defects on their prototypical designs.
