CHAPTER FOUR

What a mystery you are to me, I can’t seem to unfold I’m scared to go deeper, For what stories will be told? ©Oluwatoyosi Darasimi’s POV Waking up to my 6am alarm really annoys me but what can I do, I have a 9am to 6pm class today straight so I can tell that it will be a long day and it’s just Monday. Praise and I usually wake up the same time and have our prayer time. The weekend had gone by so fast I had gone back to work immediately after meeting Adeyemi and also on Sunday after church service. Sitting up right with my pillow behind me, I pick up my bible to study. I chose to read about David again to find the answers to my questions. Reading the same chapter over and over again about when Samuel the prophet anointed David and he had asked David’s father Jesse, if he had any more sons. The fact that Jesse didn’t even remember his last born until he was asked just because he never expected the kingship to fall on him, made me think that height, shape, size and what you have materially can never be a reason why God chooses people. I think it’s because of David’s close relationship with him, that he made him king, he even said he was a man after his own heart leading me to conclude that David and God didn’t really have a specific place to meet but whenever David would go to shepherd his flocks, he would just begin his conversation with God. Jotting down my answers and writing down all the things God said in the chapter, I make a mental note to always call on God even outside my room and then I pray. I was done praying by 7am, so I woke Grace to pray and have her bath while I put spaghetti on the fire and pick out my outfit for the day. Deciding to go with a black jean trouser and a wine turtle neck top, I quickly sweep the room since we alternate it every day. I stepped into the bathroom once grace was out, I brush my teeth and have my bath. When I was done, I stepped out to see Grace had already worn her school uniform. Praise entered the bathroom next, so I put on my outfit and pair it with black sneakers. Packing my braid up in a ponytail, I wear my gold rim earrings and then I pick up my notes for the day, my phone and purse and place them in my bag. By the time I was done, Praise was already dressing up; she wore a black skirt with a check shirt pairing it with a lace up sandals and Grace was putting her books in her bag. I move to the kitchen to pack Grace’s food into her food flask and set it into her lunch bag. Praise and I quickly eat up before deciding it was time to go. We left the house and walked to our junction, where I put Grace into a cab that goes to her school. “Bye momma” she waves at me and I kiss her forehead all the while getting a few curious stares, what can I say, I had gotten used to them by now. I know it’s weird having a daughter that could pass as my junior sister but like I always say, life happens and although I hate the way I had her, I promised myself to always love her more than anything in the world. “Today is going to be a long day, at least our practical’s start next week” Praise says as we enter a cab to the school. “You’re right, I’m already tired for today and we haven’t started yet. I really want to go back and sleep” I usually don’t complain but I was feeling so tired I could sleep for a whole day. “Will you go to the shop today?” she asks and honestly, I didn’t want to. “Maybe, just for 30mins to close up” I say sighing and place my head on Praise’s shoulder “Don’t sleep in the cab, I don’t have the strength to carry you” she says removing her shoulder making me pout “You’re wicked” I reply with a sad pout and hit her laps lightly. We get to the car park and get down going to our class. We soon reach our class and lecture commenced after ten minutes with me taking notes and trying to listen because I really just want to put my head on the table and sleep. I really shouldn’t be this tired, it’s just Monday, and I wonder how the rest of the week will be like? We finish our first class by 11am and move to our next class which consisted of the same thing and feeling, Praise however was more energetic than me. I was about to doze off when I heard low voices behind me. “I heard Adeyemi coker is coming to our school for his masters” Anjola was one of our departmental mates as well, we were friends but not that close with me as she was with Praise. Her hushed voice drew our attention. Adeyemi Coker? I’ve never heard of him. “Ta lo n je be?” I ask out of curiosity, my Yoruba accent coming to play only to get a shocked face from Praise, Anjola and Adeola who was also one of our friends and again not all that close. We usually read together during exam periods and do something’s together as well. (Who is that?) “He is the CEO of Apping Inc, an application creation company that can create any kind of app from games, to software apps, to emergency apps” Praise explains making me nod. “But why is he coming to do his master’s here? I heard he already did his master’s in Business administration at a university in England.” Adeola even knows about him? Whoa, I’m really living under a rock. “Yeah, he did but I heard he wanted to do another master’s programme in Computer science since it was the course he initially studied and he chose Nigeria because he wanted a change of scenery.” Anjola explained making me even more curious. Seeing my curious face, Praise chuckles. “He is a Nigerian o, his father is one of the richest man in Nigeria but Adeyemi was sent to study in England for many years. He is a self-made millionaire even though his dad has a huge company. I heard he doesn’t really smile and only gets along with his family and close friends; he also tries to escape the media so they only have a handful of pictures of him. He also plays the keyboard and sings well” Oh, I get it now. I wonder why I haven’t heard about him before. Shrugging of my curiosity for later, we continue with our class. We finally finish our second class by 1pm and just as I was about to place my head on the table for a 30minute break since we were technically on the university break, I get a text from my supervisor telling me to come to her office immediately. “Oooohho ahh, this woman sef. Why did she pick today of all days to meet? Me, I am tired o, ah” I say groaning and hitting my legs on the floor in annoyance, I stand up and tell my friends where I was going, this was driving me crazy, I really just want to sleep for 30minutes, apparently, it was too much to ask. Since my supervisor’s office was at the post graduate college, I had to walk there without getting lunch and I was already getting hungry. The talk with my supervisor wasn’t a short one, we had talked about my project topic and where I would use as my case study, and how I will go about it, at least she wasn’t rude and harsh like some others for which I’m grateful for. Left with only 15minutes till break is over, I rushed out of her office only to be hit by someone. Not thinking too much of it, I mutter a sorry to the person without really looking at the person. “Sorry” I heard from the guy, but because of I was in a hurry I didn’t stop but zoomed to the nearest snack stand in the building. Getting a fish roll, donut and a 7up, I bring out my purse to pay. “Don’t worry about it” a voice from behind me makes me jump as I see a hand stretched out to pay. I turn to look at the person about to refuse only for my eyes to go wide. “We meet again. Don’t worry about the payment” The handsome guy, with an accent that came to my shop speaks with a little smile on his face. Snapping out of my little shock, I shake my head in refusal “No, thank you there is no need. I can pay for it myself” I say looking back at the woman to give her my money only for my hand to be held and brought back to my side. His hand was warm and then my confusing comfortable senses came back. “Take it as an apology for hitting you” he was the one that hit me? No wonder the voice was familiar. Lost in my thoughts, I see a hand waving in front of my eyes, and as I look up I see Adeyemi still smiling at me. “That’s not a problem, I wasn’t looking at where I was going, and there is no need to pay” I still say finding my voice back. “Ma’am please do not collect the money from her” he said to the snack lady who just nodded. I look back at him and sigh “Fine, thank you” I say before checking my watch to see that I had five minutes till the break ends. Groaning, I start to leave for my next class deciding to eat on the way. “You haven’t forgotten my name, have you?” startled, I jump a little, I didn’t know he was still beside me. Why is he following me? Maybe to just leave the building “It’s Adeyemi, right?” I reply wanting to keep the conversation short because I was still confused as to why this guy’s presence was comfortable for me. “So you didn’t forget, that’s good Oluwadara” hearing my name from his lips made me stop for a second because I wasn’t irritated. His tone however, was like he was happy I didn’t forget his name. “So, where are you going?” he asks in a curious tone making me lift my brows in confusion, why is this guy still talking to me? “I have a class to get too” I reply nice and short and hastened my steps since I was already getting late and tired of not being tired of the conversation. I finally leave the building. “Do you really want to get away from me that much” he says making me stop and look at him confused. What? “What?” I voiced out my confusion looking at him as he looked at me and now that I see his eyes, they were brown like hazel brown. “You are walking extremely fast like you are tired of the conversation I was trying to make” he said with a blank face but strong voice. I still didn’t understand “No, I’m walking fast because I have a class in two minutes and the lecturer is one known to dislike lateness” I explain and his face lighted up again with a little smile. “So, you admit to wanting to have a conversation with me” he says in a happy tone but it increased my confusion. What nonsense is he spewing now? Rolling my eyes, I turn to continue jogging to my class but stop for a moment “Are you okay?” I ask because I am genuinely curious as to what may be going on in his head. He just smiles and moves back step by step. I look at my watch and don’t wait for him to answer before running to my class “Alright, see you later” I heard his faint voice since I was already far from him. Yeah, see you later.
