I couldn't hold it in any longer, and tears streamed down my face.
I didn't understand why Anthony, the man I'd loved for seven years, wanted me dead. Was it all just to make room for Kailey to take my place?
As I was lost in thought, there was a knock on the door.
"Hey, sweetie, I'm coming in."
I quickly wiped my tears and pushed the bat back to its original spot.
Kailey walked in, glanced at the bat, and then at me.
"Oh, my! Your wounds are really scary. If we weren't on this little countryside getaway, we should've seen a doctor by now."
She hummed a tune and strolled over to my vanity. Casually, she picked up a pearl necklace from inside and draped it around her neck.
Then, swaying her hips like she owned the place, she grabbed some iodine to tend to my wound.
I stared at the necklace around her neck and thought, 'So that's where all my jewelry has been going.'
Over the years, I'd lost so many of the luxury items Anthony bought me, and I always assumed Mia had misplaced them while playing with her toys. I never suspected the woman standing right in front of me.
I acted like I didn't notice and reached out to touch the necklace.
"Is that a pearl necklace? Feels really nice. Kind of like one I brought with me," I said.
Kailey felt guilty and patted my hand away.
"My husband gave this to me. Maybe yours just looks similar," she snapped, clearly annoyed.
She then pressed the cotton swab hard against my wound.
"Ow, that hurts." I winced, pretending to swat her hand away, but I accidentally slapped her right across the face instead!
"f**k!" Kailey screamed, her face turning bright red.
"Oh, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to," I said and immediately grabbed the iodine from her. "You alright? Let me apply this to you."
"Don't bother! You can't even see!"
"Trust me. I can do it."
She tried to snatch the bottle back, and in the process, I "accidentally" splashed the iodine all over her face.
"OMG! Ugh, b***h, was that on purpose?!" Kailey shrieked and hopped around in pain as her eyes watered uncontrollably.
I smirked to myself. 'You have no idea how much more I'm hurting.'
But on the outside, I kept my innocent expression. "Why would I? I'm blind, remember? I can't see anything."
Kailey shot me a furious glare before storming out of the room to wash her face.
After Kailey left, I grabbed her phone from where she'd left it and started going through her messages.
She was openly flirting with Anthony through the messages.
The latest message hit me like a truck. Kailey asked: When are you going to get rid of that useless woman, babe? I hate her! I can't stand taking care of that worthless i***t anymore."
My hands shook with rage, but what made my blood run cold was Anthony's reply.
Anthony: I've put up with her long enough. Be more patient, dear. Once she's gone, we can live the good life off her inheritance.
It felt like I was falling into a bottomless pit and drowned in pain that swallowed all reason.
The man I thought loved me was all for my money.
I grew up in Creswood. My father was a well-known farmer who made a fortune selling part of his farm and buying up property in Pinehaven. He rode the wave of the real estate boom and quickly became one of the richest men on the East Coast.
By the time I was three, I already owned two mansions in Silver Hills and three buildings in Pinehaven.
Back then, everyone called me "Princess Caroline." I was adored by everyone around me.
But as I got older, things started to fall apart.
First, my mother died of cancer. Then, I found out my father had been cheating on her for years and had an adult illegitimate son. He siphoned off a lot of his fortune to that bastard. Sure, I was still rich, but I lost my parents and my perfect family.
That was when Anthony came into my life and pursued me relentlessly.
Compared to the other men trying to win my heart, he didn't have much to offer—just a regular guy working as a financial advisor. But he was sweet and gentle. That was what drew me in.
I still remember that day five years ago so vividly.
"Get out! All of you, GET OUT!" I was screaming and throwing anything I could get my hands on at the doctors and nurses, refusing to let anyone come near me.
"Why didn't I just die? Why?!"
"Caroline!" My old nanny, Vira, had rushed from the countryside to see me, and she said to me, "Sweetheart, don't cry. It's going to be okay."
"It's not okay... I lost my mom, my dad's never coming back, and Kenny... he's stopped answering my calls. He promised me we'd be together."
I sobbed, feeling utterly abandoned. It was like the whole world had turned its back on me.
At that moment, Anthony rushed in.
"Caroline, I quit my job," he said. He dropped his briefcase, walked over to me, and grabbed my hand. "Please, just give me a chance. Let me take care of you!"
"Anthony?" I looked up, shocked.
This was the same Anthony I'd rejected over and over again, yet he never gave up on me?
When I was at my lowest, the only person who came to my side was Anthony.
His warm hands gripped mine tightly, filling me with hope and strength.
"Caroline, let me be your cane! I'll give you a happy home!"
"Oh, Anthony!"
I practically fell out of bed and into his arms, holding him as tightly as I could.
I wanted so badly to rebuild the happy, beautiful family I had lost.
Later, I married him, despite my father's objections. Soon after, I got pregnant and gave birth to our daughter, Mia. I became a full-time housewife, while Anthony took care of us and managed my finances to support the family.
I loved him so much, and he loved me, too. He held my hand and helped me adjust to life as a blind woman. He even took care of me throughout my pregnancy.
So how did it end up like this?
Tears streamed down my face as I scrolled through the messages.
From the messages, I learned that they were childhood sweethearts. From the moment Kailey set foot in our home, they'd been flirting.
They'd been plotting to kill me and take my fortune for who knew how long.
I picked up my own phone and snapped photos of all the evidence.
Kailey stormed out of the bathroom, grabbed her stuff, and left without even glancing at me—her injured employer.
I watched her walk away, and hatred boiled up inside me.
I took out my phone and called my best friend Carl.
"Carl, my friend, are you still staying near our vacation house? I need your help. Get me and Mia out of here! Anthony and Kailey have been cheating, and I can't stand to stay here another second!"
Carl's a retired soldier and is now working as a fitness trainer. He'd been one of my closest friends since school.
'I need backup. I need to gather more evidence, get Mia, divorce that scumbag, and get away from these two monsters. Kailey, Anthony, you'll pay for this!' I swore to myself.
